Amazed broker realizes, women spend money. Next week, befuddled retailer notices that teenagers go to the mall.

Mr. Walentas has done so well that he has been able to raise his prices twice. He also sees more married women writing the $60,000-to-$100,000 deposit checks. “It’s the women’s checks,” he said. “It’s not like a dual account — Joe and Suzy. It’s Suzy. I’m amazed.”

Suzy gets her own paycheck. Crikey.

“A woman will say, ‘I’m still saving money in the long term.’ ” said JoAnn Schwimmer, an associate real estate broker at DJK Residential. “They’re able to see the bigger picture, while a guy says, ‘I have to get the best deal.’ ” She said that her female clients who bought four years ago have male friends still waiting for prices to drop.

But here I thought that women are supposed to be bad at math.

Of course, as Ilyka points out, the fact that single women are doing it means that it must be stupid. The post itself is an eye-roll, but the comments are where it really gets good. Apparently, single women owning their own homes is a “girl’s fantasy” because “women are terrible with money.” And why not blame the Jew feminists while we’re at it?

You wanna know what happened to women here in the States? Easy…… The jew feminist movement, once again it was just a giant jew scam. Ask yourself, who really won here, the family that just got bumped into the next tax bracket with the wife going to work? No, both spouses incomes are now taxed at a higher rate, on top of the fact that they now have to pay for childcare.

I’m so glad that these men are so much smarter than me. Before I buy a home, I’ll be sure to check in with them, to make sure that my silly little self doesn’t get ripped off by some Jew. Or feminist. Or worse, Jew feminist with a closet full of shoes.

Read all the comments. Really.

It imagines me how many wingnuts don’t understand marginal tax rates. Shit, I’ve even have Poli Sci professors insist that sometimes people refuse a raise because their takehome pay would actually decrease substantially once the tax man got through with it. Where do they come from?

  2. Ugh. No thanks on the comments. Sounds like a more offensive version of some of the dialogue from the Ed Norton movie where he played a youthful neo-Nazi.

  3. The International Jewish Conspiracy is unstoppable. We’ve invented capitalism and Marxism at the same time, fabricated the Holocaust, and subverted the racial purity of every nation we’ve lived in. If we could do that, there’s nothing we can’t do.

  4. Heraclitus, the comments are a combination of anecdotes about housing and MRA whining. Only three or four, all by the same person, are anti-Semitic.

  5. Ow. That’s horrifying.

I *do* think there’s a housing bubble. I *do* warn friends who are looking at buying about that, especially if they’d be stretching financially to do so. I *do* think that many mortgage products currently being sold are unsafe and criminally risky.

But as a single woman I bought my own house a few years ago, even though the Seattle market is (IMO) inflated. Financially I’ve calculated all the angles so I won’t care if it loses all of its value and I can handle massive financial setbacks.

I’ve also almost always made significantly more money than the men I’ve dated, pay my bills, and haven’t expected anyone to take care of me like a child… since I was a child. The men in those comments clearly haven’t interacted with a real woman in years.

  6. I think I’ll pass on the comments. I’ve already fulfilled December’s vomiting quota.

Wow. And it’s not even Xmas yet.

  7. Women buying their own homes and dealing with their own finances instead of waiting for a man to do it for them?

“We are becoming the men our mothers wanted us to marry”- GS

  8. When I got back from University I went with my mom to open my first Adult account- one for which I would be totally responsible for and and my mother wouldn’t bail me out of. My mother basically had a secret bank account since her marriage that my father never knew about, and with it she managed to pay off the mortage after my father lost his job when I was a baby, and finance further education for myself and my siblings. I may be biased, but I’m pretty sure my father would’ve lost a lot of that very useful nestegg through his poor investments and gambling (even though he doens’t have a gambling problem and usually actually makes money, he would’ve felt comfortable dipping into our entire family’s life’s savings if he had access to it.)

Speaking to the woman who opened my account, a “surprising” amount of women of my mother’s generation did this- had secret accounts separate from the joint family account. In her experience it seemed that just about every couple has personal as well as or instead of joint accounts. I think it’s reat that women don’t have to hide their money (and what should be the *family’s* money) away from their husbands, but I also don’t see anything surprising about people wanting to be in charge of their own damn money. Does anyone *really* assume that women are completely dependent on their husbands?

And anyways, what about single women? Cohabiting-unmarried?

  9. Shit, I’ve even have Poli Sci professors insist that sometimes people refuse a raise because their takehome pay would actually decrease substantially once the tax man got through with it. Where do they come from?

Not to stir trouble, but that makes perfect sense to me. The last time the teachers (and the bus drivers, for that matter) went on strike around these parts was to protest a raise, because their takehome money would be a smaller amount. Of course, they were holding out for an even *bigger* raise which would increase the after-tax takehome amount, so I don’t know if that’s quite the same as just refusing a raise.

    I’ll stop spamming now.

Thus proving how little people understand marginal tax rates, like those found in the US.

When your income increases sufficiently to put you in a higher tax bracket, the higher tax rate does not apply to the whole of your income, only to the potion that is above the cutoff for that bracket; thus why it is called a marginal tax rate.

Thus, under such a system, the only way to lose money on a raise in income is for the total marginal tax rate to exceed 100%. In the US, FICA taxes are 7.65%, the highest federal tax bracket is 35%, and the highest state tax bracket is 10.3%, making it impossible to owe more than $0.53 on any given dollar earned, so being pushed into a higher tax bracket will never cause you to lose after-tax income.

  11. This recent remark from one of the housing bubble studmuffins might be my favorite ever:

The women men want are perfectly happy with dependence since it’s a lot easier than working.

Fair deal I think. Man works hard, makes lots of money, has little bimbetter to entertain himself with. No different really than buying a Porsche or a $2500 set of golf clubs.

I just love that he sees nothing, I mean nothing at all, odd about comparing a human being to a set of golf clubs.

  12. Besides, Ilyka, if she has a *job* she’ll start to think she’s worth more than golf clubs. And then where will he be?

  13. You really think these losers have wives? If one or two actually does, I feel sorry for those poor women. Couldn’t bear to read every comment, but the overall effect sounds like a bunch of whiny loser scum no sane, self-respecting female would be caught dead near.

  14. AC Serrano is right — you always make more in the new tax bracket. I learned this is high-school economics. Part of me wonders if this new fad of complaining about how we should all stay poorer so that we make more and pay less taxes is just a right-wing talking point against a minimum wage hike.

Also, it sounds like a lot of these MRAs are sour-graping. They haven’t been able to snag a wife with their special “charms” (I called you a vapid leech — what more do you want, bitch?) and so they’re trying to take comfort in convincing themselves that all those Jewish Feminist Conspiracy Aliens or whatev aren’t worth the trouble.

  15. You really think these losers have wives?

Not exactly. Probably *ex*-wives. After you’ve had to confront the kind of losers that hang out in ‘men’s rights’ groups, you don’t doubt that they do end up married quite a lot. You’re just very unsurprised that they’re up to three ex-wives in their 40s.

You have to relish the irony of men who think the place of a woman is to be wholly financially dependant on a man then complaining that all they attract are money-grabbing hussies. Gee, think you might be a bit to blame in your own choice of women? (Not that they’re always right in their characterization of their ex-wives, but you’d think these guys would attract more than their fair share of women who are only after their money just because of the kind of women they are attracted to.)

  16. Re: tax bracket & what it really costs to work
Yes, a woman in a higher income bracket does bring home *some* money despite the increase in taxes. In my case, I considered the increased child care expenses, loss of time with my children, increased stress, change of lifestyle, etc. I discovered that it was not worth the amount of $ that I would bring home after taxes. Foregoing employment makes me more vunerable, but I took that risk. I hope to return to work in the near future when my children are older.

  17. And I thought I was in a bad mood when I got up this morning!

I can’t even think of a word that describes these neanderthals. There is no adjective negative enough that encompasses their stupidity, insecurity, and lack of fitness to remain in the human genetic pool.

Infecious human waste? Assbag? (combining asshole, and scumbag). I don’t know….

  18. Thus proving how little people understand marginal tax rates, like those found in the US.

My example wasn’t in the US, it was in Alberta. Not to argue with your point, but it wasn’t exactly the same.

  19. Ask yourself, who really won here, the family that just got bumped into the next tax bracket with the wife going to work?

Note how the yahoo just suggests that somehow Jew feminists or what-not automatically one because “the family” in question lost. By that logic, a converse of the zero-sum logic wherein if someone wins, others loose, everytime there is an economic depression, someone must have profitted big time that so many others lost …

All those, including myself, who worry about our national discourse being dominated by Econ 101 level thinking, would do well to remember that too many people don’t even understand that much economics …

  20. Given my choice of profession, it’s likely almost to a certainty that any woman I meet will make more (probably significantly more) than I do. So even if I were inclined to resent this in the first place, I’d have to get used to it really damn quick just as a survival strategy.

  21. Thus proving how little people understand marginal tax rates, like those found in the US.

If you think this is bad, in certain episodes of The West Wing, the characters make the same mistakes. I hope the real White House Communications Director doesn’t say things like “This person makes $40,000, so he’s in the 25% bracket and pays $10,000 in taxes.”

On the other hand, with the current Administration, you never know.

  22. Thus proving how little people understand marginal tax rates, like those found in the US.

    Three letters: AMT.

It’s not all about marginal tax rates. It’s also about the other tax structures that phase in or out at different levels of income.

Unless you’re like me – no real deductions at all other than personal and 401k – getting bumped into the AMT bracket means your taxes go up because you lose a bunch of deductions, most notably the mortgage interest deduction.

  23. How did a post about single women owning homes turn into “All American women are bitches and whores who spread their legs like SJP” ?

Dear god, these MRA-types all sound just the fucking same.

  24. Oh my God, what a sewer. I had no idea real estate = misogyny.

I haven’t read spittle-flecked nastiness like that since the last time y’all posted about “dad’s rights.”

Excuse me– I’m going to go scrub my brain out with a copy of my excellent credit report. So there.
