Tastes Like Burning

Running around like a mad person isn’t good for one’s health. Left work early today after becoming 90% positive that I was about to vomit, and lo, I did. I’m trying to catch up on my blog reading without horking again despite fitting six hours of sleep into the afternoon. Jet lag? Bad eggs? 24-hour flu?

Record heat does not help.

Beat this: 103 degree heat index with 60% humidity.

  1. 101 actual temp today in ABD Land – day 4 (?) in a row with actual temps 100+. Humidity is down to 42% right now, and it’s *only* 94. MO weather sucks.

I don’t even want to know what the heat index was today.

(But I don’t want to win! I want that cold front to move through early! My flowers are crisping! The tomatoes are getting sun scald! NOOOOOO!)

Seriously, I hope you’re feeling better soon. My bet’s on you’re tired and hot and your body is just screaming “enough already!”

  2. Working in such heat is no picnic either. I’m having to start out at 5 am tomorrow morning just to get a head start on a roof we have to do. During the heat phase a coupla weeks ago we were on a roof and at 10 o’clock I started getting the shakes and feeling woozy. Time to get down off there.

This kinda heat is nothing to play with. A few hours is all anyone can take.

  3. My guess, if I might armchair-doctor you for a second: Dehydration. The heat you cite alone could easily do it.

Get some clear fluids in yourself–if you’re already vomiting, start with ice chips, lukewarm broth, Sprite or 7Up, or Gatorade. Plain water might be hard to keep down once your system is this upset.

For anyone else suffering unseasonable triple-digit temperatures, a simple nag from someone who’s spent a lot of time in them: Drink water even when you don’t feel thirsty. Do it consciously and regularly. If your body isn’t used to that kind of heat, it won’t necessarily tell you “I need water” right on cue. By the time you do feel thirsty, you could be too nauseated to replenish your fluids quickly enough. I expect Mr. I-Hike-Mount-Diablo-in-the-Heat, ‘Cause-I’m-Crazy would second that.

You poor thing, Lauren. Feel better. I want more BlogHer gossip.

I’ll add flat ginger ale to that list. Got me through a nasty lower abdominal thing.

  5. Wednesday: Widespread haze before 9am. Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 100. Heat index values as high as 111. Southwest wind around 7 mph.

Thursday: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Widespread haze before 9am. Mostly sunny and hot, with a high around 99. Heat index values as high as 111. West wind between 3 and 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

    Yaaaay.

  6. You feel like burning because you’ve been burning your candle at both ends. Now turn off the computer, drink a giant glass of nice tasting water, take two pain killers and go to bed.

  7. I’ll see your 60% humidty and raise you 95% humidity in Montreal today. 95 degrees – 120 with the humidity factored in. My cat seems to be blaming me (she’s giving me that “useless human” look).

I’ve often wondered; is there any other place with a greater difference in temperature extremes (-30 in winter, -50 with wind chill, and 100 in summer, 120 with humidity)?

  8. heat + dehydration + fatigue -> low blood pressure -> dizzy ->puke. If you’d passed out to boot, I wouldn’t have been surprised.

What everyone else said: Lotsa water and rest are in order.

  9. 101 actual temperature with 70 per cent humidity. Luckily it’s raining now.

Drink lots of water. Lots and lots of water.

  10. Yesterday here in Ottawa (Ottawa! The frozen north ffs!) It was 118 with the humidity, which was at 70%. Today it’s going to be 113 with the humidty, which will be at 77%.

    (I think, anyway. It’s 48C and 45C)

  11. And besides the water, buy a bunch of those reusable cooler ice packs, keep them in the freezer and take a fresh one with you everywhere. Sleep with them at night. Stick one under your arm if you’re walking anywhere.

  12. Extreme heat & activity have made me puke a few times over the years. Hope you are feeling better today.

  13. (Sigh) It is pretty amazing that I can brag about it being a decent day here in the desert SW (AZ) this time of year, only around 100 and only 35% humidity.

  14. Man. That kind of describes EVERY mid July through mid August here in the Ohio Valley of humidityhell I call Louisville. We’re getting it VERY easy this year actually. Last year we had above 80% humidty with heat index over 100 for 15 days straight.

I wonder why the heat fronts are all going north?! I mean shit, we’re supposed to be at 85 F Saturday. That’s ‘put on a sweatshirt’ weather for August here!

    Side note:

My boss just got back from Canada where she got a tan and talked about how comfortable it was here in Louisville when she got back…at 95 F!!!
