Shameless Self-Promotion Sunday November 9, 2014 Jill Promote yourself. Netiquette reminders: Want to recommend someone else’s writing instead? Try the latest signal-boosting thread. We expect Content Notes as a courtesy to our readers for problematic content in linked posts and/or their comment threads (a habit of posting only triggering/disparaging links may annoy the Giraffe (you really don’t want to annoy the Giraffe)). Content Notes are not needed if your post title is already descriptive of problematic content. extended discussion of self-promotion links on this thread is counter-productive for the intended signal-boosting – the idea is for the promoted sites to get more traffic. If it’s a side-discussion that would be off-topic/unwelcome/distressing on the other site, take it to #spillover after leaving a note on this thread redirecting others there.
This week’s listicle round-up featured empowering quotes, influential teens, white privilege, and more. I also criticized some of the criticism of “All about that bass“. Finally, I added about half a dozen links to my feminist reading list / gift guide. Enjoy!
This week on Kiss My Wonder Woman: A recap of the Outlander finale, and how it deals with rape The Berenstain Bears are beloved and popular, but they espouse problematic values. So why do kids like them so much? Rage, Rage Against the Dying of the Light and V for Vendetta The new show Constantine strives to be off color and funny, but mostly just ends up super offensive. Tune in this week for a review of Big Hero 6, Bob’s Burgers and coming of age, and Amy Santiago from Brooklyn 99.
Over at delagar, I blog about my new Grounded Parents post. It has to do with my kid being assigned to read Merchant of Venice at her heavily Xtian school, and the problems that ensued. Read about it here: This Jew Bleeds.
I’m participating in NaBloPoMo so it has been a busy week. I’m focusing on the intersection of art and blogging. CN: transphobia, violence An Ohio transwoman was brutally attacked and is now recovering after several surgeries. CN: child abuse, murder, religious themes I wrote about a passage from The Brothers Karamazov and how it relates to the murder of a local young woman of color. The time I volunteered on Election Day also known as hours spent dealing with people who insisted on driving senior citizens to the polls rather than the actual volunteer tasks available.
Trans readers take note: Sue has a habit of repeatedly posting unmarked links to cissexist content and has no interest in engaging with anyone who points this out. Click through at your own risk. [Moderator note: Sue has in fact posted Content Notes (CNs) for her content discussing transphobia this week. ~tt]
Moderator Note: bookshopcat, you were asked the last time you gave an almost identical response to one of Sue's posts to discuss your issues with her in #spillover, where several people challenged your statements. Sue was also asked to step up to the discussion with you about this. Neither of you did so, so both of you have been put into automoderation as a result.
This week at Cafe I wrote about the emotional labor (and actual labor) of the holidays and why “gifts”–meaning castoffs and junk–given to mothers can be so crappy.

Hey so Time magazine has a “what word would you most like to see disappear?” feature, and the word feminist is “winning”, so I’m trying to get people to vote for the word bae, which is currently the runner-up, instead. You can vote here: http://time.com/3576870/worst-words-poll-2014/
This week, I’ve shared the links that I’ve been really into, AND started an interview series with the rad feminist women in my life.
