Tomorrow: Femme Fatales Take Over Brooklyn

And if you’re around, you should check it out. From the press release, which was kindly sent on to me by Deanna:

FEMME FATALES WILL TAKE OVER BROOKLYN GALLERY WITH MUSIC, ART, FASHION AND FOOD

They don’t cook. They don’t clean. They just make ART. And on July 8, 2006 at 8:00pm over a dozen female creators of all kinds will overrun the 49 Bogart Street Gallery, nestled in the underground-yet-up-and-coming neighborhood of Bushwick. United as FEMME FATALES and “celebrating the female in its most seductive and destructive mode,” the event will showcase musicians, fashion designers, performers and artists – every one of them female, powerful, and politically minded.

Co-organized by the projects DATA23 (data23.com) and KONCEPSHUN (koncepshun.org), FEMME FATALES includes DJs Gala, Katalyst, Kid.6ister, Strife, Winter, and live performances by Rhiannon and Alison LeFevre. Charlotte Gaspard and Caitlin Burns will regale the crowd with fashion and sculpture, plus mixed media installations by Betty Topkat Kao and Riffrag will be on display. Other works on the walls will include: graphic design by Brit Weiss, drawings by Em Sixteen, graffiti by Jheart and Daisy, and agit-mock-prop posters by Sophia Del Gigante. Attendees will find the culinary arts well represented by Lola.

“I got tired of throwing the same old events that end up as ‘sausage fests.’ It’s about time the ladies take a little more action in the art world and explode this predominantly male scene,” explains Fay S. of data23.com, who built this impressive roster with Michelle from koncepshun.org.

The gallery doors open at 8pm and arrivals before 9pm enter for free. “This event’s range of expression represents incredible creativity and spirit from some of New York’s finest underground female visionaries. It emphasizes their creative contributions and draws attention to how women are drastically under-represented in the art world,” exclaims 49 Bogart Co-Curator Garrison Buxton. But the FEMME FATALES are as playful as they are powerful, with a free drink for all who attend dressed as female icons – both real and fictional. Peripheral Media Projects will provide on-site silk-screening for $5.00 to attendees who bring shirts, and that includes whatever guests might be wearing at the time.

With such a dazzling array of talent, FEMME FATALES reminds us that the work of female creators stands on its own, but at the same time it’s a fine thing to gather and pay tribute to the female principle.
