Shameless Self-Promotion Sunday October 19, 2014 Jill Promote yourself. Netiquette reminders: Want to recommend someone else’s writing instead? Try the latest signal-boosting thread. we expect Content Notes as a courtesy to our readers for problematic content in linked posts and/or their comment threads (a habit of posting only triggering/disparaging links may annoy the Giraffe (you really don’t want to annoy the Giraffe)). Content Notes are not needed if your post title is already descriptive of problematic content. extended discussion of self-promotion links on this thread is counter-productive for the intended signal-boosting – the idea is for the promoted sites to get more traffic. If it’s a side-discussion that would be off-topic/unwelcome/distressing on the other site, take it to #spillover after leaving a note on this thread redirecting others there.
This week in feminism and mothering, I wrote about how the expression “helicopter mother” needs to die–and how “controlling” is a gendered word used to discredit mothers who are responding rationally to precarious circumstances.
Happy Sunday! This week I wrote about the recent Doctor Who episode, “Kill the Moon,” and its weird, insidious pro-life themes. Tuesday was “Love Your Body” day, and I wrote about why I don’t actually love my body. This week’s listicle round-up focused on LGBT history, since October is LGBT history month. I also added several LGBT YA resources to my feminist reading list / gift guide.
Another media trope to be dissected: http://thefatalfeminist.com/2014/10/16/women-in-the-media-the-stay-away-from-your-friends-trope/
Content – transphobia. Faith based supporters of a Republican challenger for a State House seat in PA sent out a mailer tapping into trans bathroom hysteria. We had a chance to listen to Laverne Cox discuss her new show The T-Word on MTV. We are giving away Annie Lennox new album and it is scorching. We’d love for Feministe readers to enter. Last weekend, Ledcat and I went to a pumpkin patch with friends in a county adjacent to ours. I noticed that we quietly slipped back into the closet while we were there – note that this is also the territory where the mailing above took place.

[Moderator note: in last week's Self-Promotion thread you were instructed that you owe two of our regular commentors an apology if you wish to keep commenting here. Please do not ignore this again. ~tt]
Not that I want to start a fight or anything, but I note for the record: another self-promotion post, but no apology, despite tigtog’s directive. Surprised? Not.
Hi, Donna — I posted this over on last week’s posts, but I just wanted to make sure it got seen. I’m the one who posted the comment BroadBlog called “hateful,” the one she claimed was you as a sock-puppet. Wanted to make sure everyone knows that. [n.b. link added by moderator ~ tt]
Thanks for noting it, Donna – I was planning to check as soon as I’d had my coffee anyway. Broadblog’s links have been deleted until she addresses the issue from last week.
P.S. for anyone else interested in what’s going on here, there’s further discussion in Open Thread With Cheese Platter.
This week, I wrote about contraception in the zombie apocalypse. Most of us who have discussed with our friends about what weapons and supplies would be best for the zombie apocalypse neglect contraception from our lists of essential items. Go over the pros and cons of different types of apocalypse-friendly birth control methods. Also, tons of coverage on the Arizona midterm elections on our blog — check it out if you actually live here!
I’ve started a blog about my attempts to regain independence in middle-age. About marriage, career, job and most of all independence. This week’s posts: How I regret abandoning my career when I got married Is it possible to have your own kind of marriage? Marriage nearly killed my brain I got married for security Why a minimum wage job is like a marshmellow experiment Thank you.
Over on my tarot blog, I’ve been doing lots of thinking and sorting… Here I’ve rearranged my ‘tarot tips’ posts so newcomers and tarot learners can easily find what they’re looking for. And here I’ve been thinking about the effect social media has on my life and making a decision to take a break. This is a personal post about big changes in my life recently. And here is an amazing writer I discovered who makes gorgeous handmade tarot bags – really worth a look! Thanks for the opportunity to share! Beth xxx
I literally just hit publish on this and came here to share it – I had a scary run-in with a random man on the street last night, and wrote about it for my travel blog. I want to encourage people not to fear traveling solo, particularly women. http://www.theepicadventurer.com/2014/10/why-you-shouldnt-fear-traveling-solo.html
This week, I wrote about the specifics of new sex education programs that focus on respectful relationships, consent and teaching gender equality to teenaged students. It’s important that we take these primary prevention strategies so we can one day put a stop to violence against women. Let me know what you think 🙂 http://raisehimright.wordpress.com/2014/10/22/love-bites-all-you-need-to-know/ Thanks!
Returned to blogging after a 12 week hiatus. “I want to be a wild and strong broad in a collective of equally wild and strong broads. I don’t think I can be that if I’m focusing on being charming and cute. It feels sacrilegious to say this, but f*ck charming.”
Shifting the content of an off-topic comment on another thread here because this is where it’s more on-topic: Hello! My name is Alexandra and I am from Portugal. I am currently doing an essay about Rape Culture and I would appreciate if you could answer and share my questionnaire. I need results to make a graphic. Thank you very much!
