Friday Feminist Round-Up

Kuwaiti women vote for the first time in the country’s history.

“I feel like I am a full citizen today,” said Maha Barjes, a member of Kuwait’s Human Rights Society and longtime women’s rights campaigner. “The results of this election will be very different. Even the men now acknowledge that.”

This is a big moment. Good for them.

Why the courts matter: The Arkansas State Supreme Court rules that gay men and lesbians cannot be barred from being foster parents.

The blog of the American Constitution Society at Emory Law School has two great posts on Roe v. Wade and progressive contrarianism. Check em out: Part 1 and Part 2.

The latest toy from Taiwan: Benign Girl. Huh. Thanks to Matt for the link.

Penn and Teller call Bullshit! on abstinence. Ha. Thanks to Rick for passing this one on.

Dads Just Wanna Stay Home: Forty percent of working dads say that they would stay home with their kids if their partner made enough money to support the family. And as it stands, the Dad situation is a little sad: Three out of ten dads say that they spend less than two hours a day with their kids; 10% say that they spend less than one hour a day. I’d say it’s about time for family-friendly workplace policies. They benefit everyone.

For the dudes: Penis pumps can help with erectile dysfunction. You learn something new every day.

Sympathy for the She-Devil: Female bosses are finally getting a better shake in the movies. At least a little bit.

A very inspiring woman: Luz Elena Gutierrez

From the right-wing media: Superman is gay and Lois Lane is a slut. Sounds like my kind of movie.

  1. Sympathy for the She-Devil: Female bosses are finally getting a better shake in the movies. At least a little bit.

You know, as someone who’s been abused by male and female bosses alike and suffered psychologically for it, I really hope this isn’t what we’re pulling for as far as “women in power.” Did you read the book? The woman is conniving, manipulative, and expects her subordinates to read her mind, all the while degrading them and calling them names.

There has to be a way to be successful without abusing others, and bosses like this should not be “cheered on” just because they are a woman in charge. I don’t know why feminists are even supporting this. Doesn’t it enforce the “don’t hire women becasue they’re only superficial bitches” stereotype we all are trying to fight?

  2. I have a minor criticism of Penn & Teller’s calling Bullshit! on abstinence.

Calling something “human nature,” like sexual activity, is down-right silly. It implies that we can’t help it, because we’re biologically programmed! However, factor in society and culture as well as that ambiguous & equivocal subject of free-will and it turns out we’re a little bit more complicated than that.

    And Jocelyn Elders is awesome.

  3. here is something funny from kuwait:

Nevertheless, allowing women to vote has encouraged conservatives like Mr. Tabtabaei to become more pragmatic. He insisted that he always supported giving the vote to women but was against allowing women to run for office. On Saturday night, he sought to emphasize his support of his newfound voting base in a speech entitled “Women and Political Awareness.”

“For the men, we held one rally,” he said, and added, apparently hoping to impress the women, “For you ladies, we have held five.”
