  • extended discussion of self-promotion links on this thread is counter-productive for the intended signal-boosting –  the idea is for the promoted sites to get more traffic.  If it’s a side-discussion that would be off-topic/unwelcome/distressing on the other site, take it to #spillover after leaving a note on this thread redirecting others there.

  1. One of the first major breakthroughs in contraceptive technology was the diaphragm. A century ago, American birth control activists risked jail time to smuggle them into the country, but by the 1960s, the introduction of the hormonal birth control pill led to the diaphragm’s downturn in popularity.

But is the diaphragm poised for a comeback, especially among those looking for a non-hormonal method that can be deployed as needed? Meet Caya, an over-the-counter, one-size-fits-most diaphragm that could hit U.S. pharmacies next year.

  2. Divining the news- blatant and organized child sexual abuse went unpunished for decades in Rotherham, England. Estimated 1,400 victims. Who is to blame? The British press says it’s those politically correct anti-racists who intimidated the authorities into letting the Pakis get away with it. NPR repeated this line uncritically. Good way to enable racism while distracting from the question of why children were not protected by those responsible. Tarot Daily Dot Decoder

  4. A local (Pgh) YouTube show “Pittsburgh Dad” makes their first reference to the gay community and it didn’t escape my attention.

Pittsburgh’s largest (and oldest) print newspaper supports statewide non-discrimination based on sexual orientation. No reference to gender identity or gender expression. #FAIL

The Top Ten BRAD Takei Moments in the new documentary about husband George Takei “To Be Takei”

(Content Note – video recording of physical and verbal assault. The young man in this video is safe and living with friends now.) A 20 year old Georgia gay man recorded his family’s intervention with him about his sexual orientation. It is horrifying, but important to acknowledge in terms of intrafamily violence against LGBTQ people.

In light of the fact that 18 year old Michael Brown did not survive his encounter with the police, it is worthwhile to note that a 26 year old gay white man in Harrisburg who has admitted stealing $8,000 from a community group is permitted to turn himself in on his own terms. That contrast means something.

  5. The California legislature has passed a law upgrading “no means no” to “yes means yes” (awaiting the governor’s signature) as a basis for determining whether a complaint constitutes rape at state-funded colleges.

I look at two concerns that have been voiced:

    1. worries over the nanny state moving into the bedroom

    2. worries that a law like this isn’t fair if both people are drunk

I’ve put forth some of my own thoughts on these issues, and I would welcome feedback or alternative ways of thinking about them.

  6. In Praise Of Lesbian Doctors. Getting healthcare as a trans person is damn difficult. A few dedicated people have gone out of their way to show me respect, advocate for my rights, and deliver the care I need.

The Chance To Be A Boy. Feeling like a man. Many guys struggle with this elusive goal. For trans guys, the process can be even more fraught and confusing. How to grow into a man if you weren’t allowed to be a boy?
