Theodore Wafer, the man who killed Renisha McBride as she knocked on his door searching for help after a car accident, has been convicted of second-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter, and a felony firearm charge. His sentence, which could range up to life in prison, will be decided August 25.
In convicting Wafer, the jury of seven men and five women rejected his claim that he feared for his life and/or fired accidentally and/or didn’t know the gun was loaded the night he killed McBride, instead following the prosecution’s argument that he “wanted a confrontation” and intended to kill whoever was standing on the other side of his screen door when he answered the door with a loaded shotgun.
After the verdict, Monica McBride, Renisha’s mother, praised the prosecution.
“Her life mattered and we showed that,” she said about her daughter.
