Shameless Self-Promotion Sunday May 18, 2014 Jill Promote yourself. Netiquette reminders: Want to recommend someone else’s writing instead? Try the latest signal-boosting thread. we expect Content Notes as a courtesy to our readers for problematic content in linked posts and/or their comment threads (a habit of posting only triggering/disparaging links may annoy the Giraffe (you really don’t want to annoy the Giraffe)) extended discussion of self-promotion links on this thread is counter-productive for the intended signal-boosting – the idea is for the promoted sites to get more traffic. If it’s a side-discussion that would be off-topic/unwelcome/distressing on the other site, take it to #spillover after leaving a note on this thread redirecting others there.
I wrote about: –Activism opportunity: #ChangeTheWorldNotOurBodies – a campaign to take time and money we might have spent on the weight cycling industry, and instead donate it to make the world a better place. –Ideas for #ChangeTheWorldNotOurBodies: fat community projects.
Also: –Past the point of no return: not just a Phantom of the Opera song. My thoughts on the irreversible decline of the West Antarctic ice sheet. –In defense of the questions, “Where do you get your confidence?” –There is no one right way for fat women to look.
Last Sunday was Mother’s Day, and on Monday we posted our wish list for societal changes that would make it easier to be a mom: more support for single mothers, less expensive maternity care, wider access to childcare, more investment in preschool, and parental leave policies that are in line with the rest of the developed world.
I wrote about the new book about the Lesbian Avengers “Eating Fire” and I’m giving one copy away to someone in the United States. I contributed to the National Mental Health Month Day of Blogging with post on how I take mental health breaks. I shared Five Pieces of Advice I wish someone had offered my ten years ago about community organizing in the LGBTQ community. Some reflections on the kindness of strangers (and friends) in response to a new project to challenge poverty in the LGBTQ community.
Feministe When I talk about objectification, every now and then someone — it may be either a man or a woman — protests that: Women do it too! Women check out men! Playgirl exists! Young girls love teeny-bopper Tiger Beat Etc. Do Women Objectify Men? http://broadblogs.com/2014/05/05/do-women-objectify-men/ And here’s a post by one of my students. Excerpt: I have been sexually assaulted three times in my life. I am sharing my story not because it is fun, but because it is the epitome of common. I hope to help others who have been hurt, and who might be at risk for further harm. Over at delagar, I write a post on some really cool news we got last night about the feminist anthology The Other Half of The Sky.
Looking Normal. Response to a TED talk by Norman Spack, an endocrinologist who treats transgender teenagers. In his zeal for helping trans teenagers “look normal,” Spack has neglected the other half of the struggle: creating a society where we don’t have to be invisible to be acceptable.
This week – confessions of a former “cool girl”. And, since we’re being shameless, an oldie from January on feminism and tattoos!

In celebration, I have created an Open Thread with links to each episode. I’ve been nattering on for about a year in regards to Sailor Moon and feminism–I’d love to hear your thoughts! Sailor Moon’s on Hulu! Open Thread
Nice racists. Peggy McIntosh, who helped many people better understand the concept of privilege, talks about how people can be oppressive and nice at the same time. Your “I’m not a feminist” phase. How she would respond when women don’t want to identify as feminists?
