Shameless Self-Promotion Sunday

Promote yourself.

Netiquette reminders:

  • Want to recommend someone else’s writing instead? Try the latest signal-boosting thread.
  • we expect Content Notes as a courtesy to our readers for problematic content in linked posts and/or their comment threads (a habit of posting only triggering/disparaging links may annoy the Giraffe (you really don’t want to annoy the Giraffe))
  • extended discussion of self-promotion links on this thread is counter-productive for the intended signal-boosting –  the idea is for the promoted sites to get more traffic.  If it’s a side-discussion that would be off-topic/unwelcome/distressing on the other site, take it to #spillover after leaving a note on this thread redirecting others there.

  1. I wrote about the new book about the Lesbian Avengers “Eating Fire” and I’m giving one copy away to someone in the United States.

I contributed to the National Mental Health Month Day of Blogging with post on how I take mental health breaks.

I shared Five Pieces of Advice I wish someone had offered my ten years ago about community organizing in the LGBTQ community.

Some reflections on the kindness of strangers (and friends) in response to a new project to challenge poverty in the LGBTQ community.

  2. Feministe

When I talk about objectification, every now and then someone — it may be either a man or a woman — protests that:

    Women do it too!
    Women check out men!
    Playgirl exists!
Young girls love teeny-bopper Tiger Beat
    Etc.

And here’s a post by one of my students. Excerpt:

I have been sexually assaulted three times in my life.

I am sharing my story not because it is fun, but because it is the epitome of common. I hope to help others who have been hurt, and who might be at risk for further harm.

  3. Looking Normal. Response to a TED talk by Norman Spack, an endocrinologist who treats transgender teenagers. In his zeal for helping trans teenagers “look normal,” Spack has neglected the other half of the struggle: creating a society where we don’t have to be invisible to be acceptable.

  4. This week on Kiss My Wonder Woman…there was a lot of stuff on Game of Thrones and Veronica Mars:

Rape Is Always, Always Person: Game of Thrones vs. Veronica Mars

Recaps of Game of Thrones 4×06 and Orphan Black 2×04

What if you could write any comic you wanted (for Marvel)?

Strong Female Character Friday: Forever Carlyle (Lazarus)

Tune in this upcoming week for Ms. Marvel and “passing”, Lumberjanes, and more!

  5. Woohoo!!! Sailor Moon’s finally available to view online on Hulu.com! (Sorry international readers, only people living in the States will be able to view it). In celebration, I have created an Open Thread with links to each episode. I’ve been nattering on for about a year in regards to Sailor Moon and feminism–I’d love to hear your thoughts!
