So much for the hope that all the extra nose hair would shield me from the depredations of allergy season.

  1. I have bad nosehair, too. But still allergies. I stopped trimming it in the belief that it was there to DO something, but, alas, no. It is there to humiliate me.

  2. I am ultra paranoid about my nose hair. I probably wouldn’t think about it so much if you couldn’t see right up into my nostrils, but you can, and I am hyper-vigilant about beating back any venturing hairs.

As for allergies, it’s supposed to be a particularly bad season in New York. What was amazing to me was that when I was in Louisiana, among exotic pollen and sleeping in tents outside and playing around with black mold and drywall dust all day, my sinuses were crystal clear.

  3. Ugh. No wonder my eyes are burning.

    A couple of non-medicine helpers:

Get a neti pot if you don’t already have one. Sorta gross but it will help flush out your nose. You can buy plastic, dishwasher-safe ones at Walgreens along with little packets to mix in the water to make it like saline (http://www.sinucleanse.com has the info along with a cheesy video showing you how to use it)

If you have any sort of vaporizer or personal steamer, use it. You might want to add a couple drops of eucalyptus oil to help clear you up.

Drink drink drink! Water, that is, not bourbon. 🙂

As for medicine, I’m a big fan of Mucinex – time-release Guyafenisen that will make the gook both thinner and more watery (ew ew EW) so that it will drain more easily.

Allergies suck – they’re horrible down here right now in the armpit of Florida as well. Hope you feel better soon!

  4. I both clip and pluck nosehair, even if it isn’t showing. I don’t like the feeling of those little hairs moving around.

  5. Zuzu, it’s precisely because those pollens were exotic to you that they didn’t bug you. Might even be true of the mild stuff, too; I know nothing about the speciation or distribution of those fungi. If you spent more time there you might start reacting.

Piny, I’m here to tell you that extra nose hair, which some of us get via mere age, doesn’t help a damned bit. Just facilitates proteinaceous stalactites. Gesundheit.
