These signal-boosting posts are a complement to our long-standing Shameless Self-Promotion Sundays, this thread is for recommending someone else‘s writings/events. Use this thread for ICYMI links and anything else you think other readers might find interesting.

Especially welcome are links to those who are blogging on issues Feministe has not recently addressed (the links can be to older posts, just something you’ve found recently relevant).  Please save the self-promotion links for this Sunday – use this thread to let Feministe readers know about the other blogs you love to read, and activist/celebration events you long to attend, especially from those on the margins of the mainstream social justice communities, who tend to not get as much exposure as they should.

Netiquette Guidelines:

  1. Effective signal boosting names the article author(s) and/or organising bodies.
  2. Include content notes/trigger warnings/NSFW alerts where needed as a courtesy to other readers.
  3. Keep this thread focussed on the linking – the idea is to make your comments on the other blogs being linked!  (seconding/thirding etc is fine, adding extra Content Notes for the benefit of other readers is a community service, linking further/related reading is always welcome, but keep it short and sweet)
  4. If you have Reasons to not leave a response on a recommended article, don’t just dump it on this thread  ~ analytical discussions about various links belong on the Open Thread or Spillover.

  2. I know this is a Huffington Post article so I apologize for any groaning in advance, but I wanted to share this piece by Bino A. Realuyo on the erasure of Filipino farm workers from the popular history of the United Farm Workers and the Delano Grape Strike.

    This is one of the big controversies locally (I am from Delano, still live here, and my grandfather/grand-uncle both were members of the union starting in late 1965 although not very active) about the new film Cesar Chavez and an ongoing frustration for our local Filipino community which not only contributed so much but basically started the strike (the Mexican community joined it later). I did a blog post back in ’12 on the erasure but I would rather share a link of someone from the Filipino community talking about it. Bino A. Realuyo is not from Delano, not from California or our way of life actually, but he talks about what the Manongs’ stories mean to him, and about the importance of the diverse peoples who came together to form the UFW and do the activism. It’s good stuff.

    1. Also, I should clarify myself by saying that by “not…from our way of life actually,” I mean the author is not from the Central Valley of California and wasn’t raised in the local farm culture.

  4. [Content note: sexual harassment, sexual assault, vexatious litigation, rape culture denialism]
    Signal-boosting a legal costs fundraiser for Doctor Karen Stollznow, who is being sued for defamation by former colleague Ben Radford regarding her claims of sexual harassment against him, in what looks to many people to have been an attempt to silence her because of her lack of funds to defend the case. Many people unhappy with how ‘organised’ skepticism has been handling harassment complaints urged her to crowdfund, and her initial target of $30K was reached within hours. However, if Radford continues with the lawsuit, Stollznow’s expenses could be up to three times that amount, and the fundraiser still has nearly two weeks to go, and some people want to send a message to various skeptic orgs about how many donors and how many donations they’re alienating by not taking complaints against Big Names seriously, so the total is still rising. Any excess funds will go to Colorado’s Sexual Assault Victim Advocate Center.

    n.b. this case is infamous in the skeptic community, and both Stollznow and Radford have vociferous supporters. This thread is not the space to hash out those points of disagreement yet again. Take it to #spillover if you must, but make sure you read Jason Thibeault’s timeline of the latest developments before you do.
