Psst, Jonah!

Goldberg:

Hollywood has yet to make a “great” movie about Washington. This is the cinematic corollary to the even hoarier cliche that the United States has yet to produce a great novel about the nation’s capital. These cliches reign supreme because they happen to be true.

Doesn’t the LA Times have fact-checkers?

(The rest of his op/ed doesn’t even make sense, so I’m not going to bother with it).

  1. Great minds think alike. I clicked on your link only to be absolutely positive we were on the same page. We were.

  2. But, see, Mr. Smith can’t be great ‘cuz the businessmen use *money* to subvert the law! There is no way such a socialist film can be considered great in this fair nation!

[just to be clear, this is sarcasm]

  3. Also: The Manchurian Candidate. Nixon. All the President’s Men. Advise and Consent. Seven Days in May. The Best Man. All The King’s Men (about Huey Long, a Senator, at least). And the original Born Yesterday.

  4. BTW, if I had to pick one of those listed, including Mr. Smith Goes To Washington (Capra makes me feel like I’m drenched in corn syrup), it’s All the President’s Men.

  5. (Capra makes me feel like I’m drenched in corn syrup)

Ever see his WWII propaganda films, the Why We Fight series?

Let’s just say they did not benefit from being shown right after Leni Riefenstahl’s work in my Politics, Propaganda & Cinema class. The Walt Disney animations were kinda cool, though.

  6. Almost all the movies I’ve seen in Capra’s era make me kinda queasy for the forties overdrama.

I too did due dilligence and sauntered over to Jonah’s page and I too have confirmed you definately had little more to work with.

Its tough to fight with hot air, simply for its lack of substance. Maybe he and ole Bill Buckley’s boy there are lovers and this article is the his mea culpa from a bad fight last weekend?

  7. You do understand Goldberg gets an extra ZING from being called names don’t you?

Its the ONLY explanation I can see for MOST of his statements.
