Netiquette reminders:

  • Want to recommend someone else’s writing instead? Try the weekly signal-boosting thread.
  • we expect Content Notes as a courtesy to our readers for problematic content in linked posts and/or their comment threads (a habit of posting only triggering/disparaging links may annoy the Giraffe (you really don’t want to annoy the Giraffe))
  • extended discussion of self-promotion links on this thread is counter-productive for the intended signal-boosting –  the idea is for the promoted sites to get more traffic.  If it’s a side-discussion that would be off-topic/unwelcome/distressing on the other site, take it to #spillover after leaving a note on this thread redirecting others there.

  1. Just four decades ago, the American Psychiatric Association classified homosexuality as a mental illness. But 40 years ago today, that diagnosis was removed. Read all about medical code 302.0 and the masked man who helped motivate the APA’s reevaluation of its attitudes toward the gay and lesbian community.

Plus, bonus for those of you seeking more things to click on: a link roundup, featuring good news, bad news, shocking news, and the blaming of women for the spread of STDs!

      1. The APA has updated with the statement that an error was made. They do not classify pedophilia as a sexual orientation, and it is still a disorder.

  2. Over at delagar, I write a review of Top of the Lake, a wonderful mini-series by Jane Campion, who you might remember from The Piano.

Top of The Lake, set in New Zealand, concerns CSA and rape, among many other issues, so it might not be for everyone. But if you can handle it, it’s amazing.

  3. Last week I detailed the danger presented to both escorts and non sex working women by Mike Meisenbach of Seattle. Mike Meisenbach was client that nearly killed me and is now having his attorneys threaten me and other women unless we go silent. This isn’t, however, a repeat of my shameless self promotion post of last week.

I have gotten a series of ridiculous responses in defense of Mike by a total hobbyist type named Stan. Stan is semi infuriating and semi comical because he is so far off the mark and so cliche hobbyist. Alas, I introduce you to hobbyist client type Stan. http://shannonleighton.com/fan-letter-hobbyist/

    1. This is horrific. I hope you are safe and have healed in as many ways as possible. Doubly horrific to have Stans question your experience.

  5. My book, Even As We Speak, was published by Class Action Ink. Poems–funny, angry, yearning–about the private concerns of a feminist. For example:

    I Embarrass Myself,
    But It Could Be Worse

My teacher wanted to be, like Yeats,
a bird poet. He was a dog poet.
    I was a car poet (there aren’t
many) for years, and then a dog poet
(a particular dog), and am becoming
that dreaded cliché, a flower poet.
Not, at least, daffodils. And still
a full step better than an outin-
    the-woods-with-ferns-andfurry-
    creatures-leaves-andsunlit-
    at-last-God poet.

(Available at the website and on Amazon.)

  6. I started a blog, where I share newsworthy social (in)justice and offer my thoughts on things. I put a couple of trigger warnings at the beginnings of articles/posts if necessary.

I have a page that lists resources for those affected by sexual violence, mental health, and addiction/substance abuse. I would appreciate if you all would submit information about resources from your home state. http://taiyibmanifested.com/resources-for-assault-mental-health-and-substance-abuse/

I have a page for “gold stars”, where I will profile positive, inspirational people/activists/feminists/whatever. You can submit someone you know/know of here and I will follow up with an interview/brief bio with them. http://taiyibmanifested.com/gold-star/

I also have a book recommendation page http://taiyibmanifested.com/book-recommendations/

I wrote an article on the one year anniversary of the Sandy Hook school shooting, mainly about mental health. http://taiyibmanifested.com/2013/12/14/reflections-on-the-one-year-anniversary-of-the-sandy-hook-shooting/

I wrote an article about Susan Boyle’s rise to fame. http://taiyibmanifested.com/2013/12/12/we-should-be-ashamed-susan-boyles-fame/

And lastly, I wrote an article about what tolerance REALLY is and why we need it. http://taiyibmanifested.com/2013/12/12/tolerance-what-it-is-and-why-we-need-it/

    Enjoy!

  7. I wrote about the annual “how to address Christmas cards to the lesbians” discussion (and threw out a challenge to everyone to send me a card.)

A related post discusses how I fell in love with the concept of a Community Center.

On a more activist note, I reviewed how Pittsburgh ranked in the HRC’s Municipal Equality Index – not well is the short answer, but there’s hope.

And finally some thoughts about coping with the holidays while living with a mental illness.

  8. I write about gender, art, science, and puns (not too many! but I really can’t help myself.) on my twitter feed, @casedrury. Last night I had an interesting gender/ships in the night moment:

What do you guys think about late night gender-war-tragedy stuff like this? How do you handle Schrodinger stranger-danger without losing your sense of self?

p.s. a dude has already helpfully replied asking if the guy ‘looked nice’. #missingthepoint

  9. In Noting Abusive Theologians, I commend the Mennonite church and publishing house for its recent decision to acknowledge the sexual harassment and abuse perpetrated by one of its great theologians, John Howard Yoder, and reflect on how the sexually abusive behavior of another highly-regarded theologian, Paul Tillich, has and has not been acknowledged, and on the larger question of whether and how to assess a theologian’s writings in light of his/her abusive deeds.

Also this week, I wrote about the symbolism of the Advent wreath. Read, vote in the poll, and share.

  10. I haven’t Shamelessly Self-Promoted in a few weeks, but it looks like it’s Queer Things Month at the Tea Cosy. That, and food. Queerness and food.

In Stay Out Of My Bubble! Personal Spaces and Public Places, I wrote about a guy sitting next to me on a quiet bus, and why that is far more unpleasant than it looked.

In I Hope Their Kid Is Gay, I talk about the idea that somehow, homophobes having queer kids is some kind of justice. Because we are not a punchline, and we are not a punishment.

The Overwhelming Heteronormativity of Born This Way is a challenge to the entire narrative that queerness is something that is entirely innate, that we can’t help, and that could never be a choice.

And Why Don’t The Bi People Just Come Out Already? An Open Letter To Dan Savage is.. exactly what it says it is.

Oh, and here’s a link for some seriously yummy Crispy Slow-Cooked Chicken Wings. Because everyone needs hot, tasty comfort food, right?

    Enjoy!
