  1. Just four decades ago, the American Psychiatric Association classified homosexuality as a mental illness. But 40 years ago today, that diagnosis was removed. Read all about medical code 302.0 and the masked man who helped motivate the APA’s reevaluation of its attitudes toward the gay and lesbian community.

      1. The APA has updated with the statement that an error was made. They do not classify pedophilia as a sexual orientation, and it is still a disorder.

  9. Over at delagar, I write a review of Top of the Lake, a wonderful mini-series by Jane Campion, who you might remember from The Piano.

    Top of The Lake, set in New Zealand, concerns CSA and rape, among many other issues, so it might not be for everyone. But if you can handle it, it’s amazing.

  10. Last week I detailed the danger presented to both escorts and non sex working women by Mike Meisenbach of Seattle. Mike Meisenbach was client that nearly killed me and is now having his attorneys threaten me and other women unless we go silent. This isn’t, however, a repeat of my shameless self promotion post of last week.

    I have gotten a series of ridiculous responses in defense of Mike by a total hobbyist type named Stan. Stan is semi infuriating and semi comical because he is so far off the mark and so cliche hobbyist.     I was a car poet (there aren’t

  17. I wrote about the annual “how to address Christmas cards to the lesbians” discussion (and threw out a challenge to everyone to send me a card.)

In Noting Abusive Theologians, I commend the Mennonite church and publishing house for its recent decision to acknowledge the sexual harassment and abuse perpetrated by one of its great theologians, John Howard Yoder, and reflect on how the sexually abusive behavior of another highly-regarded theologian, Paul Tillich, has and has not been acknowledged, and on the larger question of whether and how to assess a theologian’s writings in light of his/her abusive deeds.

  23. I haven’t Shamelessly Self-Promoted in a few weeks, but it looks like it’s Queer Things Month at the Tea Cosy. That, and food. Queerness and food.

    In Stay Out Of My Bubble! Personal Spaces and Public Places, I wrote about a guy sitting next to me on a quiet bus, and why that is far more unpleasant than it looked.

    In I Hope Their Kid Is Gay, I talk about the idea that somehow, homophobes having queer kids is some kind of justice. Because we are not a punchline, and we are not a punishment.

    The Overwhelming Heteronormativity of Born This Way is a challenge to the entire narrative that queerness is something that is entirely innate, that we can’t help, and that could never be a choice.

    And Why Don’t The Bi People Just Come Out Already? An Open Letter To Dan Savage is.. exactly what it says it is.
