Friday Cat Blogging

No FRT from me until I perhaps get with the times and get some kind of device to play mp3s on.

And maybe some mp3s, for that matter.

God, I’m so uncool.

Anyway, some cat pics!

Here we have Sugarplum giving me the hairy eyeball as Junebug stands guard to make sure Sugarplum doesn’t get too close to me. Zuzu can sit on my lap all night and Junebug doesn’t give a crap, but let Sugarplum even walk in the room and there’s a lot of whining and anxiety.

Zuzu waiting for me to feed her. She’ll sit on the kitchen counter and scream like a howler monkey until I get the food out.

  1. scream like a howler monkey until I get the food out

I get the “six o’clock and all is well!” from Pablo. And the “seven o’clock and all is well!” and “eight o’clock and all is well!” etc., until I wake up. Then it’s “I can see the bottom of my food bowl” until I refill the feeding trough.

  2. Don’t worry about not having any kind of mp3 anything. Just cheat like I do and use Yahoo Launchcast.

My cat pretty much knows our family will feed him when we’re good and ready in the morning. Since that is almost without fail at 7:30 in the morning, he doesn’t care that much. Nights are a different story, though. He’ll start his whining anytime between 4:00 and 6:00, and if he isn’t instantly fed, he’ll start his little “playful” thing, where he rubs us affectionately if we’re sitting down, then attacks our legs whenever we stand up and move around until we finally get tired of it and feed him. Jackass.

  3. Zuzu has such tiny cute little paws!!

My cat and dog work together to get me up – they take turns jumping on my chest, cat purrs in my ear, dog licks my face. When I had a tall chest next to the bed the cat would jump up to the chest then down to the bed for maximum bounce.

I’ve trained them to understand on Sat/Sun I’m not getting up early and so the dog retaliated by peeing on the floor. I’ve decided to get up earlier but only give them the wet/dry food mix on the weekends.

  4. i can never figure out how to get rid of those scary alien eyes that cats get in pictures. is there some kind of lighting trick that anyone knows? anyone?

my cat will just come sit on us in the morning. she usually doesn’t really meow, or poke, or scratch. she’ll just sit herself on and/or against any part of us that she can and purr like crazy. and at 5:00 a.m., that purring can sound really loud!

  5. Zuzu, what beautiful kitties you have! 🙂 Looking forward to lots of pix of them, since I’ll miss seeing Doug and Pablo.

    kate.d.:
The only way to not get the “alien eyes” when taking pix of cats (especially) or any other nocturnal/semi-noctural animal is to not use flash. 🙁 The flash bounces off of the really, really good reflective surface of their retinas (the reason they see so well in damn-near-no-light) and presto! You get glowing green/yellow/red eyes! Also the reason for “red eye’ in human pictures — not enough natural light, so the pupil is way dilated to see properly, and flash light bouncing off the retina.

Anti-red eye flash might work — that does a quick little blinky flash to tell the pupil to constrict, so that there isn’t so much light entering the eye. But I’m betting most cats would get the hang of that trick and bolt before you can get the shot you want. My digital camera is good enough to just hold the shutter way open for a longish time if I turn the flash off but still have it in idiot mode. Great for the sleepy cat shots; not so great for any animal that is awake and alert.

  6. Zuzu, you’re cat sounds like a cat I used to have (before my ex-husband lost her, bastardo). She was a rescue kitty at 3 weeks old so had been fed by humans pretty much since the time she could start remembering them. This little black furball would stand in the kitchen and howl sooo loud! When she got older, she’d just prance around her food dish and do the longing meow.

My other cat, Phantom, will either sit on top of the dryer or stand in front of it meowing ’til you 1)feed her and 2)pet her while feeding her. She won’t eat ’til she has deemed your affections are sincere enough.
