We posted about Lawrence v. Texas — the landmark Supreme Court decision that struck down sodomy laws less than a decade ago. Monday was the 14th anniversary of the arrest that led to this case, and we wrote about the strange circumstances surrounding that arrest and described how it evolved into an important legal challenge. We also put together a Friday link roundup for those of you who can’t get enough links (and snarky commentary thereon). And if you’re in Arizona (or just interested in Arizona politics), please check out our ongoing Meet Our Candidates series, featuring Q&As with pro-choice candidates! This week we featured Michael Powell (challenging Kimberly “you’re pregnant two weeks before conception” Yee in the state senate race), Janie Hydrick, and Patricia Flickner.
Two from me this week. “No More Page 3!” Petition to Dominic Mohan: Take the Bare Boobs Out of The Sun – In the UK, the petition to get rid of The Sun’s topless Page Three models is growing quickly. I write about why it’s important. Slutwalk London 2012 – My thoughts on the controversial reclamation of the term ‘slut’, and my experience at yesterday’s London Slutwalk.
Stuff I’ve written lately: Thoughts on the Kate Middleton topless photos thing: A very short post. Enjoy family life…with parrots: Fisking a Jehovah’s Witness pamphlet, stuck in my door handle, on how to have a God-approved marriage and family
The notion that a woman would want to study calculus, or even English Literature, should not make her unnatural: http://onefemalegaze.wordpress.com/2012/09/17/mathochism-unnatural-women/ First exam with new calc instructor. Sadly, the odds favor a C: http://onefemalegaze.wordpress.com/2012/09/19/mathochism-testing-my-limits/ Yeah, it’s a derivative, but is it smooth? http://onefemalegaze.wordpress.com/2012/09/20/mathochism-smooth-derivatives/
When Fandom Moves to Real Life : looking at how fandom disconnect from the fantasy they watch to the real world and how this creates unrealistic expectations for both authors and actors. Review: Death’s Rival by Faith Hunter, Book 5 of the Jane Yellowrock Series Haven Series 1 Recap and Haven Series 2 Recap as well as a recap and review of season opener. This week I wrote about some popular representations of superheroines and wonder what their superpowers actually are. http://canbebitter.wordpress.com/2012/09/18/why-female-sexuality-is-not-a-legitimate-superpower/
I wrote a short review of Madonna & Me, a collection of essays written by some pretty familiar names. (With the caveat that I’ve never really been a fan myself.)
I wrote a longish piece based on Megan McArdle’s, asking whether college is worth it? http://daisysdeadair.blogspot.com/2012/09/is-college-worth-it.html Comments welcome! I’ve gotten a few different perspectives so far. Cut to the chase…my opinion is no, while still admitting that it is currently being used as an economic gate-keeper.
Is sex segregation good for women? http://clarissasblog.com/2012/09/21/who-thinks-that-sex-segregation-is-good-for-women/ Tell me who your friends are (on who promotes sexism): http://clarissasblog.com/2012/09/18/tell-me-who-your-friends-are-2/
I posted about the way that even writers are judged by their looks, and the amount of talent that doesn’t get recognized because society requires artists to fit such a narrow mold of beauty.
Rush Limbaugh Thinks He Discovers a New Disease It’s called DUD (Dwindling Unit Disorder), and this nurse explains why most cases are mis-diagnosed. Why do we put The Lord’s name on paper that is stuffed into strippers underwear and slipped into the greasy palms of politicians? Demand that ‘In God We Trust’ be removed from our currency now! That’s Why They Call it Filthy Lucre
On yoga, body size, and taking up space. Why telling people, “Just fire your doctor” can be problematic. And A Small Endometriosis Rant, on how the classification system is set up with fertility — but not with pain — in mind.
I wrote about Jean Grae’s amazing new song “Kill Screen” I am also still trying to raise money so I can make my gory feminist horror film about the phone sex industry (I was a pso for almost a decade.)
Two closely-related posts about trust, betrayal, and navigating inside and outside reactions to the aftermath: Who can you trust after abuse? A tough call. What happens next? Dealing with the no-baggage requirement.
Hmm, my comment isn’t popping up, slightly worried that it’s been marked as spam/abuse due to the picking up of a word that rhymes with glut. (I blogged about 5lutwalk London this week.) Help mods?
We had two new writers make their debuts at Muslimah Media Watch this week!. wood turtle wrote about questions of hijab and secularism that arose during the recent provincial elections in Quebec, and Sya looked at images of disability in Muslim communities through her analysis of coverage of Muslim women Paralympians. Rounding out our week, Anike wrote about Braids on a Bald Head, a film about a relationship between two women in Nigeria, and Eren shared her thoughts on a recent documentary about transgendered Muslim women in Indonesia.
This week at Nursing Clio: http://nursingclio.wordpress.com/ -Men: Masturbation Equals Liberty! -“It’s Not My Job To Worry About Those People” -There’s No Crying in the Archives! Also, don’t forget to ‘like’ us on Facebook!
This week in Fromage: In Faint Hope, I get all discombobulated about the still tantalizing possibility of being successful in music. In Balls, I figure out how to deal with it. Maybe.
Does your state discriminate against you? If you are an atheist, it just might. I was also writing a bit about Modern Age Nuclear Construction. It may interest you. Check it out.
Ethics and Secondhand Shopping– Trying to shop secondhand to avoid some of the ethical problems with buying new clothes brings me face-to-face with all new ethical problems. The 5 Most Feminist Things about Buffy the Vampire Slayer– I just finished the series for the first time ever, and these are the things that I found the most feminist. Aristotle’s Happiness: Blogging to my PhD– I’ve started applying my PhD exam list to current events. First up, Aristotle and Mitt Romney’s 47% The Feminazis are Coming!– A short post about the things I find for sale at my rural hometown’s annual festival/flea market.
I check out the very first proper reference in an MSP’s ‘consultation paper’ (i.e, “read this & then agree with me that the law should be changed”) and find the way the study has been *used* by said politician constitutes a huge distortion of the findings of the paper. Crossness ensues.
A couple of review-like things this week. One is about the transgender horse in Doctor Who last week, and the second is a review of Hope Springs, complete with commentary on its problematic sexuality.
I wrote about evangelicals’ claim that they see sex as something beautiful and sacred, and also about wearing your virginity on your sleeve.
Not something I wrote, but a space that is feminist/feminist-friendly and looking for more members: sheroescentral.com
I wrote about how writing requires a balance of vulnerability with readers, but a real need to hold back some details. I’m still learning how to balance it all. I shared how our marriage is a half marathon, not a sprint, after we finished our first race together. I wrote about why truth-telling is so important, especially during an election year with loads of un-truths and deliberate lies.
Slate.com spent a solid week puffing the book The End of Men by its own writer/ editor, Hanna Rosin (who is also married to senior editor David Plotz). So I spent a post discussing why this might go against journalistic ethics.
I wrote a bit about Yahoo’s sexist tendencies, my endless love of Leslie Knope, and being viewed as continually pre-pregnant.

On “Smug Liberals” Why I’m not looking for my “other half” How to have sex like they do in the movies (hint: by talking about it)
(Gonna try this again, this time censoring the words I think caused my first comment to be removed by the spam filter) “No More Page 3!” Petition to Dominic Mohan: Take the Bare B00bs Out of The Sun – In the UK, the petition to get rid of The Sun’s topless Page Three models is growing quickly. I write about why it’s important. 5lutwalk London 2012 – My thoughts on the controversial reclamation of the term ‘5lut’, and my experience at yesterday’s London 5lutwalk. (Mods, if my original comment gets approved, feel free to delete this one)
Steven Crowder’s rant on harlots and himbos has caused me to break out that one special gif. Among other things.
I responded to one common argument against abortion: the deprivation argument. I wrote an entry on sexual assault prevention (which hopefully isn’t too feminism101-ish). Another entry I wrote this week is a short analysis of equality as a virtue.
At Pissed Off Woman, I’m finding a lot more stuff to get pissed off about this month. Such as: The murder of the US ambassador to Libya and three other people, on the auspicious date of September 11th, which is looking just as suspicious to me as the murders in New York City and Washington DC 11 years ago. The stupidity of Muslims rioting over a movie trailer that was obviously intended to get them to riot. Mitt Romney. The coal industry. Oh, and Occupy Wall Street celebrated its 1st birthday a week ago. I was there, and wrote about it.
This week I wrote about periods and questioned some of the “they’re so special and womanly!” stuff about them. And I also posted a story that was in Cleo, an Australian women’s magazine, about my identifying as asexual.
On Strip For This, my blog about stripping, anarchism, feminism, sex, etc.: I do some gushy soapboxing after reading Chapter 3- “Jealousy”, from the quintessential book on polyamory, “The Ethical Slut”. Also, holy crap, our Kickstarter for the new Combustion Books title “A Steampunk’s Guide to Sex” is still kickin’ ass! But you can still become a backer and get the book/ e-book and other rad stuff. And we’ve got the irrepressible artist/activist Molly Crabapple as one of our newest contributors.
I wrote a piece for Thought Catalog about what it means to be beautiful…. http://thoughtcatalog.com/2012/what-does-it-mean-to-be-beautiful/
