Whether it’s rape culture, the economy, or more personal obstacles, many of us are feeling stuck these days. I wrote about some of the elements of feeling stuck, and how moving through a labyrinth can provide a different perspective. Stuck in a Labyrinth
Want ideas for a feminist movie night? Read our review of A Private Matter, a dramatization of the real-life story of Sherri Finkbine, whose 1962 abortion is now considered a pivotal event in the fight for reproductive justice. Also, check out our post on the mini-pill. It’s a progestin-only birth control pill, which is popular among many people who have had problems with “regular” birth control pills. If you are concerned about taking estrogens because you have high blood pressure, migraines, heart disease, or a history of blood clots, but still would like to take an oral contraceptive, this may be an option for you.
I reviewed ‘The Dark Knight Rises:’ http://film-nut.tumblr.com/post/28976983176/the-dark-knight-rises-2012 and collected a few choice pop culture links: http://film-nut.tumblr.com/post/29258645351/the-weekend-5

Opposite Day: J Street and the Demographic Threat Argument I wrote a post on how it is very wrong for J Street and other “progressives” to portray Israel’s Palestinian population as a “demographic threat” in order to argue for a two-state solution.
In which I write about the politics of condemning the politicization of tragedy; the complicity of our leaders’ rhetoric and policy in creating a context for violence; and the mass shootings in Arizona, Colorado, and Wisconsin: http://www.twice-cooked.com/2012/08/07/mass-shootings-and-politicizing-tragedy/
Come for the rant about Chick-fil-A’s hate-fest, stay for the funny posts about penis snakes and pootles. http://bettyfokker.wordpress.com/2012/08/06/my-six-cents-about-the-chick-fil-a-imbroglio/
This week I wrote about understanding that all objections to feminism are not equal. …the problem of racism + guns …and a quick rant against “Killer Joe.”
This week I wrote about the wholly redundant and problematic “right to pray” amendment that passed in my state, and reviewed Caitlin Moran’s much-hyped How to Be a Woman.
The Wrath of God falls on the gays, feminists, liberals– but when it comes to mass murdering tattooed white supremacists the Lord’s personal PR men are meek as lambs. Why can’t they see evil? Is there a Klan robe in their closet? Are they wearing their hoods backwards? “But What Do You Do?” Take Off the Hoods!
I posted a recipe for caramelized onion dip. It’s about 8 berzillion times tastier than the kind your mom made with Lipton soup mix in the ’60s.
The NYT piece about gender fluid children makes me wonder about what other labels we might be placing on our children. I’ve been in orientation for a new faculty position all week, so I brought out an old post I wrote about the intersections of teaching and parenting and how in both roles we care for the people our children/students are, not the people we wish they were. I also wrote about my first time going to the roller derby, where I learned that everything I thought about it was wrong.
Two on body hair (on my sudden lack of concern for anyone else’s opinion on the matter, and on how evo-psych proponents never seem to apply the same arguments to this matter as they do to, say, male infidelity). One on unlikely search terms leading people to my blog and one on |a subculture I grew up in which celebrated diversity in gender and sexuality.

I don’t diet. I don’t believe in diets. I try to eat healthy, but with two small children I have to shuttle around in a 45-pound stroller, uphill, it’s hard. “I grew up in the 80s, when putting cut-up hot dogs in my Kraft Macaroni & Cheese was considered a well-balanced meal because it had 3 of the 4 food groups in it: protein, dairy, and powdered cheese product. Apparently that is not an acceptable lunch for a grown woman.” Lies My Breakfast Cereal Told Me: http://greyskiesnyc.blogspot.com/2012/08/lies-my-breakfast-cereal-told-me.html -Meredith L.
More reviews this week at Red Pen Reviews since I’m gearing up the YA track of things. This week’s YA spotlight point is Wither, one that’s really interesting conceptually, but full of bad science, but with interesting emotions, but *weird*. Definitely a mess of well-written consent problems, since the author frames the Stockholm Syndrome and other issues as *bad*, not sexy as so many in this genre do.
This week I responded to a piece in the Atlantic which argued that the rise on the proportion of single mothers would lead to a decline in mothers’ political power as a whole. http://canbebitter.wordpress.com/2012/08/07/the-rise-of-single-mothers-the-decline-of-mothers-political-power-true-or-false/
I’ve written a post this week debunking some myths and misconceptions about Depresssion : http://canadianheathen.wordpress.com/2012/08/06/mythic-mondays-depression-is-caused-by-being-too-strong/ Here’s one about Officer Wawra of Kalamazoo, who’s whiny because he didn’t have a gun to chase off Canadians in Calgary : http://canadianheathen.wordpress.com/2012/08/09/just-because-its-a-rodeo-does-not-mean-there-has-to-be-a-shootout-at-the-corral/ And today a post about the new secrecy law regarding abortion statistics in Ontario : http://canadianheathen.wordpress.com/2012/08/12/secrecy-is-not-a-valid-counter-to-fear-lies-and-shame/
I have a guest post up from Kimberly on My Favorite Canadian Sound. Highly recommended enjoyable reading for anyone who’s experiencing a heat wave right about now. In that same vein, I wrote The Slide about when my sister and I turned our backyard swing set into our own personal swamp and slip ‘n’ slide. (My father was thrilled, I promise.) On a more serious note, I wrote Assholes Are People Too [notes for homophobia, rape, relationship abuse] on how it feels — time and again — when I discover that people I[‘ve] care[d] about are actually bigots, abusers, and rapists.
A look at what passes for ‘fact’ in the Object universe. (Object being a UK pressure group that focuses on “objectification”.)
A Crazy Beast of It’s Own Kind — Dating in New York New York dating is in it’s own category field universe… just like many of the people here are surely from a different planet, a planet known as New York City. So naturally, I have some stories and wisdom to share. Violence and arms can never resolve the problems of men. -Pope John Paul II My thoughts on the recent visible violence occurring. Don’t forget to submit to the third edition of the feminist blog carnival! This month’s theme is feminism and education. The deadline is 8/22! From my Teaching Feminism series at Care2: Cheerleading Isn’t a Sport? Where do you fall on the cheerleading debate? “That’s So Gay” Teaching students that what they say – and how they say it – matters.
Stuff I’ve written lately: Looking back : On trying to figure out what to do with my long-term but defunct Livejournal account I don’t exist for you : On a blog post which attempts to translate the incredible amount of fapping over a brief video clip of hurdler Michelle Janneke bouncing around before a race into an indictment of all women whose first priority is not being fap-worthy There’s harassment going on in the X community. I’m an Xer. Now what? : On the popularization of the “What do we do about sexual harassment in gaming” topic, and a comparison between that discussion and the same one going on in the skeptical/atheist community
Feel free to delete if fundraisers are not acceptable self-promotion: I founded Conspire Theatre which runs a year-round theatre and creative writing program, Rehearsing Possibilities, with incarcerated women at the Travis County Correctional Complex near Austin, Texas. We’re raising money for another 12 months of programming – find our campaign here.

Is NYC’s soda ban an unprecedented expansion of government? Not really http://mbolotnikova.wordpress.com/2012/08/08/is-nycs-soda-ban-an-unprecedented-expansion-of-government-power-not-really/
My favorite things I wrote this week are: 1) How well-meaning straight people sometimes give me a sad, about a conversation I had with someone about the Chick-Fil-A ridiculousness. 2) Psychology is science. Really! 3) HOLY SHIT, WE HAVE A SCIENCE ROBOT ON MARS!!! 🙂
I have no problem with Bloomberg’s Latch On NYC initiative. In fact, I think it’s a good idea. http://guerrillamom.blogspot.com/2012/08/bloomberg-cares-about-babies-and-boobs.html
The first in a series of posts that are guides for self-publishing on the Internet. More feminists should do this. Happy to offer advice if anyone has specific questions for the comments. http://clarissethorn.com/blog/2012/08/08/epublishing-amazon-smashwords-where-and-how-to-sell-ebooks/ Also, a piece on romantic power imbalances: “Loving Someone Who Doesn’t Love You Back.” http://clarissethorn.com/blog/2012/08/12/loving-someone-who-doesnt-love-you-back/
Is Casual Sex Intrinsically Demeaning? Choosing Our Battles: A Chick-Fil-A Rant A Texas Republican (Who Else?) Thinks Schools Need Mandatory Bible Reading Thanks! 🙂
This week, I discussed, among other things, gender and sexuality performances in Pashto music, highlighting the sexual and seductive role of the feminine in music videos: http://www.qissa-khwani.com/2012/08/gender-and-sexuality-performances-in.html
I wrote a four part series on how complementarians, those who believe in equal but different roles for men and women, do quite a few linguistic gymnastics to have their position sound most positive. Part I: Listen Part II: Learn Part III: Strive Part IV: Debate

On Collegiate Feminist I wrote “Revelations: Purple Scribbles in a Leather Bound Journal”… it’s a couple of pages from my diary that I wrote while in Guatape, Antioquia in Colombia connecting my struggle to free myself from the “checkbox” mentality and how writing and sharing my blog is helping me grow as a feminist and a person. http://www.collegiatefeminist.com/1/post/2012/08/revelations.html The other is about how Michele Norris posted my RACE Card submission-6 words on race on her website!! My 6 words were: “WHITE feminism. I live with contradiction.” And I also included an explanation re: why I chose those 6 words http://www.collegiatefeminist.com/1/post/2012/08/the-race-card-project-white-feminism-i-live-with-contradiction.html On an unrelated feminist note-there are 8 blogs that I re-posted from our program page about my experience in Medellín this summer with DukeEngage Colombia making documentaries about the families and their experiences with violence, conflict, and displacement.
