  1. Zara’a hat, unfortunately, reminds me of a sparkly version my neighbor’s dog’s craps on the sidewalk. I’ve never seen any other dog who crapped in ice cream-like swirls, though. So hopefully he’s an anomaly, and no one else sees the resemblance? Go on and enjoy your wacky hat, kids!

Would it not be a better world if we all walked around in crazy hats all the time? I have to believe that it would be much harder for us to hate one another if each and every one of us had embellished tulle frisbees on our heads.

  2. No need to publish, but it’s Duchess, not Dutchess. Holland is sadly absent from most British pageantry 😛

  3. I love the hats, and I fervently wish the United States were a hat-wearing culture.

P.S. Who is the guy making the funny face in the picture accompanying the post? He seems a little out of place.

  4. I agree about Zara Philips. That thing looks like an alien! But I think the beautiful Duchess of Cambridge should get snaps for her curious first hat, the one that looks like a giant butterfly landed on it (her red outfit is stunning from head to toe). And the Duchess of Cornwall looks like she’s under a hairdryer.

I guess Princess Beatrice thought she should tone it down a bit. 🙂

  5. @samanthab: I had exactly the same association (except for the my neighbor’s part). If I had just seen that on a random site somewhere I would have thought it a photoshopped joke.

  6. @ Speedbudget

At a guess I’d say he’s probably a gurning champion. Gurning is a ‘sport’ where people pull the silliest/strangest faces they can.

Some parts of the UK have the strangest traditions. Where I’m from we don’t do such silly things, we just throw round cheeses down hills and run after them, far more sensible 😉

Best of the Jubilee silliness imho: http://worldofbunthrowing.blogspot.co.uk/

  7. I AM TRIGGERED BY THE DISCUSSION OF HATS AND THE INHERENT PITTING OF WOMEN AGAINST EACH OTHER FOR THE FRIVOLOUS PURPOSE OF FASHION AND THE ANTI-REPUBLICAN INSTITUTION OF ROYALTY.

  8. And yet, Matlun, I’d rather look at it than another piece about the evil governor who shall not be named.

  9. Women will never be free until the last queen is strangled with the entrails of the last hat!

  10. We need a thread like this after the last few days around here. Zara gets my vote too.

Holland is sadly absent from most British pageantry.

Made me spit my coffee. But also is PROBLEMATIC. You’re silencing followers of William of Orange, you are!

  11. Women will never be free until the last queen is strangled with the entrails of the last hat!

To advocate for the murder of women with innocent millinery is misogynistic and hattist. And clearly PROBLEMATIC.

How can you use this piece of meat-propaganda as a rallying cry for what is SUPPOSED to be feminism? Way to alienate all the vegans, Jill. GOD. Where is your intersectionality?

  13. I can’t believe there are already over 20 posts over something so trivial as hats when there are so many other feminist concerns in the world, such as all the women who aren’t so lucky as to HAVE fancy hats. PROBLEMATIC.

  14. I for one, am surprised any feminist would advocate for the patriarchal covering of women, here on a feminist blog.

    1. That’s funny, because when I wrote it I accidentally initially typed “Whore Wore It Best?” and then had to correct. I can’t decide if I like my version or yours better…

  15. Jill, how could you?! Surely you know the deeply sexist, classist, racist, and ableist roots of haberdashery! Such ignorance and from a feminist blog!

  16. And yet, Matlun, I’d rather look at it than another piece about the evil governor who shall not be named.

Certainly. Feeling confusion about the strange things people choose to put on their heads can be a welcome break. But confused I am.

  17. I suspect that Jill gets a secret masochistic thrill from posting certain things on here just to see what happens.

I suspect such inappropriate thrill seeking behavior is required if you’re a feminist blogger. Which is obviously problematic.

Both of these things are correct. Although I suspected that this one would be TOO obvious to really start anything, after The Great Hat Debate of 2011.

  19. Why all the feminist hate on the haberdashers? You know what you all are? Mishaberandrists, that’s what.

  20. For the record, my vote goes to Sophie, Countess of Wessex for what appears to be some kind of deconstructed quail.

I’m personally a little disappointed that you couldn’t find us any photos of men in similarly spectacular hats though. Way to reify heterosexist gender norms Jill.

  21. I’m just glad the Duchess of Kent is still able to make public appearances, nearly nineteen years after consoling Jana Novotna. When the Duchess abdicated her role at Wimbledon, I feared the worst.

Mr Li – My parents managed to put me off hats at a very young age. From the time I was about age ten, for several years they provided me with smaller versions of hats that would have been appropriate for 35-year-old businessmen. I haven’t worn a hat for decades now, even in the middle of winters that require one. Part of me might not mind wearing a hat if I could find one with sufficient oomph, but that old block just refuses to let me.

  22. I’ve become enthusiastically pro-hat of late. Finding a charming straw fedora on sale led me to declare this summer the Summer of Hats. Then I put it on and realized I looked ridiculous in it. Then I said fuck it, it’s the Summer of Hats, so I’ve been wearing the hell out of it. If I had a hat like the Countess of Wessex’s, though, I’d probably be wearing the hell out of that one instead.

    Hatters gotta hat.
Oh my gods did I really write that?

    Yes, you did.

  23. ….I have to admit, I have a top hat. It was gift, I swear! I only wear it around the house when I feel like being odd and fancy!

Alright, I have three top hats. For various occasions.

  24. I’m kind of loving Camilla’s lampshade-esque beige thing. But I say this as someone who once dressed up as a lamp for Halloween, complete with working lightbulb. So.

  25. I inherited a great-grandfather’s top hat, which wewore when he was knighted. Plus I do enjoy my other hats, at times when I am not playing around with hair.
Creative hairmakes wearing a hat awkward sometimes.

  26. Re: Grace Jones

“We love you our queen! … to the rhythm”

    Cracked me up.

  27. Caperton, it *must* be the summer of hats because I’ve been doing the same. I’ve always looked terrible in hats, probably because I’ve got a giant freaking lady head that can only wear a men’s M-L. And yet lately I’ve felt mysteriously, freakishly compelled to wear them. I had a red ring around my forehead the first day I wore my men’s medium cap, it was so tight. And yet I was determined to break it in. Which eventually worked, but the hat’s still not very flattering. I’m still wearing it, and I’m working on a second.

You can evoke a whole world in a hat. A pair of pants are pretty much always just going to be a pair of pants, but a hat can make you into a 1920’s newsboy or 1930’s gangster or a 1950’s first lady. I love that.

  28. Can someone please explain what is going on with the guy in the photo? Is that a ‘shop?

  29. Generally, the feeling of something stuck on my head all day makes me feel very uncomfortable. I almost always have a strong urge to take off a hat or something similar as soon as I put one on. And I always have the weird fear that they’re going to fly off my head somehow. The only exceptions are mashadahs (traditional Arabic headdresses) and beanies (in the winter). At least those are comfortable.

  30. The only exceptions are mashadahs (traditional Arabic headdresses) and beanies (in the winter). At least those are comfortable.

Woo yeah beanies. Bring that shit up. If you come to Wales you can wear a beanie in the summer.

  31. Nvm, already been discussed.

I only know what gurning is from The Hunchback of NĂ´tre Dame. I should have figured it out from the frame thing. It’s just such an ODD juxtaposition. I think that’s why everyone’s first reaction is “FAKE!!!!”

  32. What is this, Jezebel? I mean if you’re into that “who wore it best” stuff that’s all very fine and well but I don’t think this is the right place to post it. Start a fashion blog or something. I come here to read about feminism.

Yesssss exactly the comment I was waiting for.

  33. Damn, serious Poe’s Law in action with Lynny’s comment. Not only does the internet need a sarcasm font, it also needs a “No, I actually mean this and thus am a tiresome jerk” font.

  34. Yeah, Jill. Lynny comes here to read about feminism, so disabling all the other posts on the site and replacing them all with “Who Wore it Best” hat posts is totally uncool!

Oh…it’s just one post on a page that also contains posts about DoMA, the morning after pill, abortion, and slut-shaming? Well, even so. The fashion post might give the other ones cooties.

  35. Caperton actually made that comment in #3, but Lynny did it with more panache (and also aplomb, leading to the invocation of Poe’s Law).

  36. Also, I know I’m missing the point of the post, but I still can’t get over the guy gurning through the horsecollar.

    All of the nightmares.
