Prison Time for Women Who Use the Morning After Pill

Ed note. This post is from Healthy Lives editor Mark Leon Goldberg.

There is terrible legislation being considered in Honduras which would send women to jail if they use the morning after pill. There is no exception for victims of sexual assault. The global activist group Avaaz is sounding the alarm on this terrible legislation, which is being actively debated in the Honduran Congress and may be “just days away.”

According to Avaaz, the one man who can stop this bill in its tracks is the President of the Congress. They have mounted a pressure campaign to convince President Juan Orlando Hernandez to squash this bill. As part of this campaign, the are circulating an online petition to show the Honduran government that this kind of anti-women legislation is not acceptable.

An email from Avaaz landed in my inbox. Read it… then take action.

  1. Oh, I initially thought you meant this legislation was being considered in Mississippi or Alabama.

  2. Signed and sent an email. It’s amazing watching the signatures on that petition mount up. I have no idea if this kind of action is usually effective but let’s hope.

  3. Wow.

Next up: Conservatives promote the death penalty as the only feasible solution to the economic problem of ever-mounting conviction rates.

Because wouldn’t that just make so much sense?

It would make sense to them. They’ve already re-instituted slavery for inmates.

  5. As if it were not evident before, the War against Women continues and clearly exists not only in the U.S. but across the globe. This is just another example of the attempt to control women’s sexuality within a patriarchal society. We continue to criminalize a woman’s right to be sexually active and refuse to acknowledge that not all sexual encounters are by choice.
