Friday Reads

There are so many things I wanted to write about this week but didn’t get around to. Check out a few (and sorry in advance for those of you who follow me on Twitter, since this is basically my feed reproduced):

When is terrorism not terrorism? When it involves abortion clinics
:

The firebombing of the clinic in which Rogers was charged was an act dangerous to human life that was a violation of the criminal laws of the nation and the state of Florida. It appears to be intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population, and to influence the policy of the government.

If that sounds like legal language, that’s because it is. Here is the definition of domestic terrorism in the U.S. Code:

More here.

Rick Santorum’s abortion stance would have killed his own wife. Whether she had an abortion or induced early labor to save herself, she wouldn’t have had that choice in Rick Santorum’s America.

Vibrators: Everyone’s buying ’em!

The federal definition of rape now includes men. And look at that, it only took until 2012 to recognize that men are victims of rape too.

The Washington Post’s new ladyblog is bad for women. Even though it’s got that sweet 80s-looking lipstick graphic.

Salsa and Sexism: Are you mouthing misogyny? (Answer: yes).

Katie Roiphe go home.

Today in People Are Really Fucking Stupid: Yes, it is a crime to use the internet incite a riot or to sell fake merchandise or to flout a court injunction. And different countries have different laws!

Santorum and Bachmann are politically identical, and about equally as divorced from reality (although I’d argue that she’s more charismatic). So why is he succeeding when she floundered? (Hint: Genitals).

Shit white girls say to black girls. I am fairly over the “Shit Members Of X Stereotype Say,” but this is legit funny (and disturbingly accurate).

The Case Against Marriage
. I am not actually on board with the conclusions of the piece and I think this guy is wrong in a lot of ways, but this is an interesting read.

Wait, good teachers actually, like, help kids learn? Weird.

  1. The best Cash4Gold rejection letter of all time.

Because “quadriplegic hookers” and “ungreased backdoor sex” are always hilarious?

    Are you kidding?

  2. And how do we know it’s a real letter and that this person really said those things, as opposed to its being an attempt at humor? Note that the alleged quotation from him refers to him as “you” rather than “I.” But even if he did say those things, the alleged humor of the response seems to be largely derived from the putative quotations themselves, and they simply aren’t funny. YMMV, of course.

Yeah that’s fair. I more read it as, “Wow look at this fucking jerk who keeps sending us these letters that are horrific in every POSSIBLE way.” But I may be misreading. And clearly my interpretation is not universal, so I’m going to remove it from the post.

  3. Uh, some of the content in that rejection letter is kind of triggering to stumble into unwarned (serves me right for clicking on a mystery link I guess). Could you maybe add a content warning to mitigate your assessment of its hilarity?

  4. oh katie roiphe. so incredibly boring, so fabulously thoughtless. i tend not to get worked up over her stuff, mainly because i fall asleep about halfway through the first paragraph, what with her bizarre, torturous syntax and gibberish metaphors. she’s like a less fun lovecraft, with all the misogyny and racism left in.

  5. Did you read the comments on that video? I knew I shouldn’t. The very first one was schooling people on how white girls only say these things to black girls because of the way black girls are acting in the first place. Enlighten me, dude; how, precisely, are the black ladies acting that impels white girls to insult their hair?

  6. “penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim,”

The sex organ doing the penetration belongs to another person than the victim.

This still excludes being made to penetrate someone else (which I have experienced) as rape. So, yes, better, but still not there.
