Why date hot men?

Glad I’m doing something right:

What is fascinating about this evidence is that the authors find that if the man in the couple is very attractive and/or very masculine, the woman is significantly more likely to have an orgasm either at the same time as her partner, or just after. So the timing of orgasms for women with attractive partners coincides with the period that increases fertility supporting the argument that orgasms play an evolutionary function – women orgasm more frequently and with better timing when their partners have better genes.

Also, obviously, “on average, women have orgasms before men and that most frequently they involve some activity other than intercourse.” Science!

  1. Increased period of fertility? Didn’t they disprove the cervical upsuck hypothesis a while ago?

  2. I question the methodology.. are we talking subjectively hot or those that fit the common accepted societal definition of hot?

In other news, I’m not sure how I feel about Rick Mercer being in tune with my sexual activity.

  3. Given how unnatural most modern concepts of “attractive” are, the “better genes” thing seems suspect…

  4. If orgasms increased the chances of conception, it doesn’t make sense that most women can’t orgasm with vaginal intercourse. If a trait helped you reproduce, it would be passed on and it would be more prevalent in the population.

  5. Okay, the “upsuck” theory has no weight. Orgasm does not increase fertility and someone who says it has scientific evidence/support is lying or can’t read the previous research. Ergo, even if we bought that hotness = better genes, hotness causing near simultaneous orgasm does NOT mean someone is more likely to get pregnant.

    Yay bad science!

  6. The article doesn’t specifically say “upsuck,” but I don’t know what the fuck else she could be talking about with the “increased sperm retention” bit. Maybe there’s a new bullshit hypothesis about how vaginas hoard sperm in the g-spot, but only if there’s simultaneous orgasm? It probably doesn’t help that this article appears to be filed under “Whore$” “Dollars and Sex”

  7. Heck, I imagine anyone would have more orgasms with someone they thought was really, really hot.

Maybe but “Really, Really Hot” doesn’t equal Awesome at Sex.

  9. Someone is still peddling the female-orgasm-leads-to-womb-contractions-that-hurry-sperm-along-towards-the-ovum nonsense? The fact that the clitoris is located in easy reach of most women’s fingers and isn’t somewhere near the cervix suggests that its reproductive function is limited at best….

Why can’t pleasure itself be an evolutionary function?

  10. This must have appeared in close proximity to that summit of scientists who said that the oceans are dying hundreds of years ahead of schedule.

Well no, but assuming “skill level” is equal or at least sufficiently close to it, it seems reasonable that having a partner one is more strongly attracted to in the first place may be a nontrivial contributing factor to overall enjoyment.

  12. I like the way the male orgasm is the goal post that women must match in order to have “better timing.” Would this ever be framed the other way around? Do men ever have to match the woman’s orgasm in order to increase the chances of fertility? If a woman is attractive or feminine looking, does a man orgasm either right before or at the same time as his partner in order to increase the chances of fertility?

I don’t know, but cervical upsuck hypothesis would be an AWESOME name for a punk band.

Maybe it doesn’t work that way, but Awesome at Sex can equal Really, Really Hot in my book.

  15. Li: But Awesome at Sex may equal Really, Really Hot.

haha I should have read the rest of the comments first before I accidentally said exactly the same thing. Sigh.

I dunno. I believe in the Art of Anticipation. If you’re really eager to bang the person that you think is super hot, there’s an extra something something there. This, of course, can work with anyone and not just the super hot.

And how variable people find attractiveness…it’s not like there’s ever been a beautiful creature with bad genes…oh wait, cheetahs. But in our society “attractive” apparently equals “good genes” because who would want to be anything else? NVM about the diseases/exploding appendix/etc….

I’ve had orgasms in my sleep, but I’ve never had sex.

    Take that, evolution.

Unless you reproduce, evolution won’t mind.
