Shameless Self-Promotion Sunday February 6, 2011 Jill Sorry this is late! Do your thing, and go Packers.

Got 3 this time – one did not make it through last week! Guest post – Update from a guest poster – A follow up post from a guest poster who has previously blogged about vulvodynia. Vulvar pain in women of color – this was cross-posted to Womanist Musings. Interesting posts, weekend of 2/6/11 – And then there is a blog link roundup.
This week I wrote about an episode of Law and Order: SVU that passed the Bechdel Test. The Ruling that found the Individual Mandate to be Unconstitutional. My annoyance at the growing number of product placements in various forms of media.
Hey everyone, enjoy the Superbowl weekend (though I don’t follow football at all) This week I wrote a short book review on a collection of essays by Leslie Marmon Silko, arguably one of the most important modern Native American writers. http://scribblesandsonnets.blogspot.com/2011/02/yellow-woman-and-beauty-of-spirit.html
This past week on Man Boobz, more mockery of extreme, sometimes surreal misogyny. I add a few more ideas to one pickup guru’s very strange list of “Cheap And Easy Ways To Raise Your Value To A Girl.” And a few more than that. The Cupcake Files, a short series of posts highlighting misogynists using the term “cupcake” as what they think is an utterly hilarious and effective way to put down women. A post on the (highly ironic) popularity of the Atlas Shrugged fantasy among misogynists. A post on the most bizarre, er, appreciation of a Robert Palmer video you’ll ever read. And from the same site, the world’s strangest and least accurate description of feminists. Bald women, meat toilets and the MGTOW Paradox discusses some really crude and strange misogyny. Idiot MRAs opine idiotically about Egypt

Even though a lot of people have done a take on H.R. 358, here’s my perspective, and also why I can be somewhat harsh on my critiques of anti-choicers: http://indignantfeministrants.wordpress.com/2011/02/06/h-r-358-%E2%80%9Cprotect-life-act%E2%80%9D-a-malevolent-misnomer/
Chicago = Snow – Pics from the Chicago blizzard, including my neighbors’ dogs Outside my comfort zone – I’m teaching a group of kids who are very different from my usual white, middle class students Outing on the Job – I outed myself at an interview, and am trying to figure out if that was the right thing to do I don’t want to be here – Questions about how to deal with being queer in a very heteronormative space

David Kato and Uganda’s American Connection Uganda is a testing ground for a theocracy our more extreme politicians and ‘evangelists’ want to build in the US. They use our tax dollars as seed money and gay people as scapegoat and convenient target. Why Uganda? Recent history gives some answers… Brand New Weight-Loss Miracle Food Yet another one. Yams, anyone? Recipe for Jellofire Wow your friends with this flaming, transparent dessert!
This week, I discussed the way in which unconscious sexual hypocrisy can be avoided through honest self-reflection with the aid of the eraser test.
When you suddenly start losing your vision, market research on which colors are preferred by visually impaired people takes on particular resonance. (And Mr. Magoo jokes are even less funny, which I didn’t think possible.)
I talk about the fight against HR3 in the context of how choice is used to keep women voters in line: http://goldennotebooks.blogspot.com/2011/02/one-fewer-reason-to-vote-democratic.html And riff on an essay by the magnificent Vivian Gornick: http://goldennotebooks.blogspot.com/2011/01/gornick-on-bellow-with-assist-from.html
Rejecting Fat-Negativity in Vegan Advocacy http://vegansexual.blogspot.com/2011/02/rejecting-fat-negativity-in-vegan.html Always love another opportunity to criticize PeTA.
here you insert whatever it is you want to be clickable images, text etc “Is that normal?” “Who gives a fuck?!’: grumbling about people who fret over their sexuality for no other reason than because they think it’s abnormal. Examining My Demons; Part 1: [Big trigger warning for violent abuse] The first part of a series in which I recount some of the most painful aspects of my life thus far, in the hopes that laying it all out will make it easier for me to analyze and cope with.
What kind of Fuckery is this? A post that somehow combines Amy Winehouse, Gabrielle Giffords, the Patriarchy Approved Girl (TM), and every stereotype of women under the sun. Various NO ON H.R.3 posts, and a link to RAINN in case anyone wants to donate in the midst of all this.
Punish the victim: The flawed US approach to battling human trafficking and sexual slavery Describes how victims of sexual slavery and trafficking often languish in immigrant detention and are often deported due to their undocumented status. The post details the legislative history of a bill that should have offered them relief but was partially sabotaged by GOP fears over “visa fraud.” And as an added bonus, a Freeper openly advocates for Eric Rudolph’s return: http://mamservice.tumblr.com/post/3156654690
This week, I wrote a few things, starting with a review of the BBC’s “Horizon” science documentary episode, The Secret World of Pain. I also got annoyed at a gender-essentialist statement by a BDSMer to the effect that men are defined by their orgasms, and explained why that isn’t true for me, with my medical history. The budget cuts introduced by the Conservative/LibDem coalition government have started to bite, and in many areas public libraries are under threat. Author Philip Pullman spoke passionately about the campaign to save the libraries in Oxfordshire, and the “greedy ghost” of profit-based economics The other thing I want to shamelessly self-promote was why I hate to-do lists but love schedules.
(And, in keeping with the Katy Perry trend from earlier, a lighthearted, older post titled Katy Perry VS Lady Gaga. Categories include: “On What Their Boobs Say,” “Place In Pop Culture,” and “On Being Gay Icons.” Guess who wins?)
Kate: I missed that Groupon commercial. I’ll check it out tomorrow on the Fox website. I sure hope it wasn’t any worse than those Doritos spots. What the hell was Frito-Lay thinking? I don’t know which was more repulsive–the one where old people in a nursing home kept mishearing things (old people are feeble and deaf, ho ho) or the one where the office geek licked the fingers and huffed the pants of co-workers who had eaten Doritos. It’ll be awhile before I can even think about a Dorito without nausea.
This week on HB: City of Joy to Hold Opening Celebration today in Bukavu, DRC: -or- How a global community of women came together to support survivors of sexual violence.
In my world music debut, I made a satirical music video where I rewrote the melody of Nelly’s song Tip Drill for a class in order to teach about the patriarchal bargain. I posted a cute comic someone sent me about what your opposition to gay marriage means.

This week I put up a post saying how tired I have become of the objectification of TS/TG women and how we are treated either as oddities or sex objects. http://womenborntranssexual.com/2011/02/02/im-tired-of-transsexual-models-lady-boy-flight-attendants-rupauls-drag-race-drag-pageants-transsexual-porn-stars-and-sex-workers/ Then on Friday someone on Facebook asked me about when several events in the LGBT/TQ movements happened so I wrote a long chronological piece putting various events involving the formation of groups in order showing how the development of different letters of the alphabet happened at roughly the same time but apart from the same developments for people of a different letter. http://womenborntranssexual.com/2011/02/06/a-chronology-of-the-development-of-the-various-communities-of-glbttq-2/

A commenter on my blog posed the question, “Since when has abortion been a right?” Here are my answers: http://bradmillershero.blogspot.com/2011/02/abortion-is-fundamental-reproductive.html Please let me know if you have any additions!
I actually watched the Super Bowl for the first time in maybe 20 years? Yay cheeseheads. The game had good tension, the ads had much sexism, and the players have … ’70s rockstar hair? What did I miss? This week I learned from Facebook that I’m old. Like, “meet single retired men!” old. If you think you might be “old” too (hint: 30 might put you over), or if you’ve just been pegged wrong by FB’s stereotyped ad generators, come join the snark. And speaking of snark: It’s my only defense against Ohio’s horror show of a governor, the turnip-brained John Kasich. (I then had to apologize to turnips everywhere for defaming them by association. For seriousness rather than snark, there’s my post on whether Gabrielle Giffords’ husband should leave her in rehab to command the space shuttle – an issue that, while ultimately only theirs to resolve, has feminist and just plan human resonances.
Eep! Sorry about the first link in my earlier post; I copied an example of the hyperlink HTML and forgot to remove it.
The “No Abortions For Floozies!” Stance: On drawing a line on who is allowed to have abortions. Racism Isn’t Ironic: An anecdote to explain (one of) the problem(s) with ironic/hipster racism.
My most popular and/or notorious post this week was one where I took to task MRAs for dropping the ball on helping pass or implement the Prison Rape Elimination Act, which, years after passage, the DoJ is finally getting around to issuing enforcement guidelines for. (For all their “but men get raped too” complaining in feminist-friendly forums I don’t think MRAs been sufficiently involved in an area where men really could make a difference.) So that post was Prison Rape Reform Heads Up for Anyone Who’s Ever Typed “But Men Get Raped Too” In Comments on a Feminist-Friendly Blog or Forum But then after getting a lot of pushback from MRAs (not that many MRAs have been involved but that very few feminist organizations have) I did a little digging around and discovered that, sort of horrifyingly, the egregiously anti-feminist Concerned Women for America were WAAAAY more involved in lobbying in favor of the PREA than were either MRAs or mainstream feminist activists! So that post, including the most likely reason CWA got involved, is Prison Rape Reform Heads Up for Anyone Who’s Ever Typed “Women Get Raped” In Comments on a Feminist-Friendly Blog or Forum. I also want to shamelessly self-promote my take on science blogger Kate Clancy’s post about the consequences of assuming that anemia in women is a “natural” result of menstruation. (Clue: at least 85% of the time women around the world get anemia for the exact same reason men do: gastrointestinal bleeding!) Here’s a link to her post: Iron-deficiency is not something you get just for being a lady My post is about the two different ways you can chart the same data about men’s and women’s blood iron levels: the typical way, which involves assuming men are the baseline normal against which all others are considered variations, and the probably more accurate way where you chart women’s iron levels as actually staying pretty steady while beginning with puberty men’s iron levels tend to skyrocket. The consequences of that mistake include misdiagnosis and treatment of anemia in women, and, I believe, misunderstanding of more male-centric blood illnesses like hemochromatosis. Anyway, that post was Health Consequences of Assuming Men are Baseline Normal: Turns Out Women Are Usually Anemic for Same Reasons Men Are I also had a nice stroll through the radical shifts in gender construction in Would Ev-Psych Have Found the Same “Timeless Truths” About Men, Women, or Rape in Charles Darwin’s Day? Oh, and finally, to remind myself that I’m also really still supposed to blog about the sociology and politics of actual sex as well as gender and relationships, there’s Wise Guys Reply: Do Guys Like Looking Into Their Partner’s Eyes While They’re Having Sex? figleaf
Sorry about lateness! I got angry about stereotypes again – boys and girls and sewing and cooking. I found some anecdotes to demonstrate my point. http://delilah-mj.blogspot.com/2011/02/sex-and-textiles.html http://delilah-mj.blogspot.com/2011/02/boys-surgery-and-sewing.html
I spent half my time this week blogging about food and taking incredibly pleased pictures of delicious things I’d been cooking. Delicious, delicious food. The first of these was some almondy raisiney quinoa, and the second was an impressively large stack of beanburgers. Well fed, I then considered the difference between ethics and morality, as I see it, and why I’m perfectly happy to be called immoral. But not unethical. Finally, as yet more beloved businesses in my city close down- this time two bookshops- I get sad, and angry, about the recession.
Three blog posts this week (wow!). First i discussed the lack of recognition for women in SF in Learning From The Past. Then i related some lovely gender-nonconformity at work in Fun With Fans: A Happy Tale. And finally, I discussed the Katy Perry blog posts in There Is Nothing Feminist Abut Hating Women. Enjoy!
I had a pretty productive week. I wrote a handful of short posts about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fan’s new exhibit on women in rock, themes of domestic abuse in popular music, and asked how do we talk about the failures of earlier feminists?
This week, I wrote about: applying “yes means yes” standard of consent to magic and how magic and prayer are related; and whether the failure to treat the patient as a person drives people to consider alternative medicine, and what that might mean. Finally, pre-Valentine’s Day, a description of why love spells go wrong.
This week at Yes Means Yes Blog: Dear John: Why Are You Raising My Taxes? The opposition to the bill to use funding as a choke hold to restrict abortion has focused so far on the redefinition of rape, which has been dropped. However, the bill would also interfere with private employers’ ability to provide comprehensive health insurance, by incentivizing plans that exclude abortion coverage. That’s a subsidy to employers who share John Boehner’s view and a tax increase for those of us who don’t. Since I participate in the decisionmaking process over employee benefits, I can address this from the employer side.
An update on WA State’s efforts to hold crisis pregnancy centers accountable: WA State Attorney General Rob McKenna Declares the Proposed Limited Service Pregnancy Center Accountability Act Unconstitutional. This is the same State AG currently involved in one of the multi-state litigation efforts claiming the Affordable Care Act is also unconstitutional.
Following last week’s bruhaha over sexist comments made by some sports commentators in the UK, I tried to set out some elements and tropes of , using Tony Porter’s recent call to men and some well-worn debates on ‘real’ vs. ‘symbolic’ patriarchy to make my case.
Two for this weekend, mostly fluff. On Saturday, my life was a roller coaster. Sunday I celebrated my inability to understand commercials. Bonus: MOON SHUTTLE.
Sorry, that should have read: Following last week’s bruhaha over sexist comments made by some sports commentators in the UK, I tried to set out some elements and tropes of the anti-feminist backlash in an age of austerity, using Tony Porter’s recent call to men and some well-worn debates on ‘real’ vs. ‘symbolic’ patriarchy to make my case. I won’t tempt fate by trying to embed the link again. The post is here: http://thedisorderofthings.wordpress.com/2011/02/03/the-anti-feminist-backlash-in-an-age-of-austerity/
This week I wrote about my Eating Disorder (Trigger Warning) http://mturnstyles.tumblr.com/post/2976576204/what-if-i-just-kept-walking A new makeup line at Walmart for girl 8-12 years old http://mturnstyles.tumblr.com/post/3088218894/hey-girls-buy-things-at-walmart And I did a review of sexism in the novel One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest http://mturnstyles.tumblr.com/post/3098765653/sexism-in-the-cuckoos-nest
Melissa: Cuckoo’s Nest is indeed sexist, and racist on top of it. I’m sure you noticed how the aides, all of whom are black, are brutal semi-humans who despise all white people and take out their hatred on the white inmates.
Better late than never! Here’s what we got goin’ on at GAB: We wrote about the events in Egypt, particularly the leadership of veteran feminist Nawal El Sadawi, who notes that girls and women are protesting alongside men and boys in the streets. We reviewed Blue Valentine, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, and highlighted some of our current favorite feminist reads. Giffords, Piven, Beck, and the deadly weight of words looked at how hate speech is making progress so difficult in the US these days, while we posted over at Ms. Magazine about the pathetic state of gender equity at the World Economic Forum in 2011.
My third post about eco-friendly cosmetics. I wrote letters to Congress and my state legislature about Citizens United. Congressman Gary Ackerman responded to my letter about Crisis Pregnancy Centers. Some First Amendment Solutions for Prochoice activists. The other sting video that you should be watching this week.
Hello! This week in Awkward: “I know we’re here to discuss your awesome movie, but can we talk about your womb for a sec?” Why do we keep asking successful women how they handle work/family balance at work-related events? Noisy oxygen tanks and disability/accessibility issues at the opera, on which topic I am NOT an expert and would very much like people with more knowledge than me to share opinions. There is a question about how to handle things when a charismatic and popular person is accused of abuse vs. Is it the job of a pastor to be the social director of the church and make everyone get along? How is Your Church Like A Dungeons & Dragons Game? Finally, some radical rules for Facebook. You can “unfriend” all the people who annoy the shit out of you. Or “ignore.” Or “hide.” Take a stand about who you will allow into your e-life.
More Mail-mocking (vegetarianism: it’s omg so gay!), a quick snark on how people assume I like football (UK football. Soccer.) because – and only because – I fancy the players, and musings on feminist activism down the generations.
I have a new short story up that delves into the mindset of a woman who is the victim of sexual and spousal abuse. Please share it if you enjoy it. I will keep it up for at least another week. https://carvingoutavoice.wordpress.com/fiction/
So last week started off with a bang with me being stranded in the freezing cold by my para transit service provider and being told I am a liar. What helped keep me calm, focused and centered was James Taylor, The Beatles and Beethoven. http://www.inspiritual.biz/inspiritual-reflections/2011/2/1/james-taylor-the-beatles-and-beethoven.html In the Zenful Kitchen I owned my addiction to food and talked about at the age of 54 I am finally ready to learn how to eat healthy. http://www.inspiritual.biz/the-zenful-kitchen/2011/2/4/learning-how-to-eat-at-54.html And I finished up week 7 and started on week 8 of my nine week spiritual journaling adventure Week 7, Day 6 – Solitude — http://www.inspiritual.biz/stirring-my-spiritual-waters/2011/2/2/week-7-day-6-solitude.html Week 7, Day 7 – Rewarding Yourself, Gifts Offered — http://www.inspiritual.biz/stirring-my-spiritual-waters/2011/2/3/week-7-day-7-rewarding-yourself-gifts-offered.html Week 8, Day 1 – Forgiveness – http://www.inspiritual.biz/stirring-my-spiritual-waters/2011/2/3/week-8-day-1-forgiveness-1.html Week 8, Day 2 – All we can handle — http://www.inspiritual.biz/stirring-my-spiritual-waters/2011/2/4/week-8-day-2-all-we-can-handle.html Week 8, Day 3 – Humor – http://www.inspiritual.biz/stirring-my-spiritual-waters/2011/2/4/week-8-day-3-humor.html Week 8, Day 4 – Gratitude – http://www.inspiritual.biz/stirring-my-spiritual-waters/2011/2/5/week-8-day-4-gratitude.html Week 8, Day 5 – Simplicity – http://www.inspiritual.biz/stirring-my-spiritual-waters/2011/2/6/week-8-day-5-simplicity.html
Yay, Packers! I haven’t been writing much lately, but I have written about what it feels like to encounter a patient with a statistically grim prognosis, and also argued that the association (or non-association) of abortion with mental health status really has no bearing on the abortion wars.
Hi everyone, My name is Erica, and I am making the transition from college newspaper sexual health columnist to grown-up blogger. My new blog is called “I Can’t Ask My Doctor THAT!”, which I hope can eventually become a resource for people who may not feel comfortable talking to their physicians about sexual health (or whose physicians may not have the knowledge they seek). I am starting the blog with some archived work from my college newspapers, which will lay a good deal of groundwork for a variety of topics, and I hope to transition to questions from internet readers who don’t feel comfortable asking their doctor THAT. So I hope you all will consider reading, writing in, and/or offering feedback as I try to find my bearings in this new medium. Thank you all for your consideration.
i’m really late. but i still wanted to share a post from last week. it’s about black consciousness, african liberation month and my intersectional political. oh, and there’s also one about the japanese dance form butoh and it’s potential for black people as a way to reconnect with the power and horror of the middle passage through art. cheers and apologies for posting so late. 🙂
I am submitting a post about the importance of a woman’s personal identity outside of marriage and motherhood, using the movie “War of the Roses” as an example.
Almost forgot! I finally made a post about my struggle with being an atheist in the South after being inspired by a video I watched on Youtube. Enjoy! http://beinglumina.blogspot.com/2011/02/one-human-race.html
Hello All – I recently made a short documentary film on an all female clown group from Toronto Canada called Rosie and LouLou. The film follows these two lady clowns as they “search for love” in Toronto’s financial district. We are trying to raise hit counts on YouTube in order to get further funding for these two wonderfully empowered clowns to make for films.
