  1. On QT:

Out of sight, out of mind? – Transgender People’s Experiences of Domestic Abuse – Trans people experience very high rates of domestic abuse

Social Justice: What do we want? – More talk on calling out, but also looking beyond that specific conversation and talking about how to do social justice better

QT and Posting and My Inability to be Consistent – This is really about my ADHD and infodumping, and the title is about dealing with my inability to meet my own expectations.

  2. Hi! I am starting to post regularly PatientC and I think am starting to get a feel for it.

Watch This Space! is a post where I talk about plans for the place, and what people would like to see.

The SmartAss Guide to Wheelchair Etiquette, in which I go off about how to treat a person in a chair… you know, like a person.

Awkward Moments 2 the next installment in a series of the weirdness that can happen with disability and interacting.

DC Cabs — No Rides for Service Animals where I hope to continue the service animal discussion started in the SM Guide above.

Thanks for taking a look!I am really, really hoping I did not mess up the HTML code, and I apologize if I did.

  3. Majority of Caesareans Are Done Before Labor. I would feel better about these c-section numbers if I felt like women were choosing surgery because they had been given all the options, had weighed their possibilities, and then decided this was the best course of action for them. But I’m not sure that doctors are having conversations with women about all their options for labor. To have anything other than a doctor-deemed “normal” medical version of birth, you have time, resources, and, therefore, levels of privilege. That is what these numbers mean to me.

Woman, Take off Your Heels. You are TOO Tall. Redskins’ cornerback demands female reporter take her heels off before TV interviews so that he wouldn’t look too short and make him look bad.

Girl, you are TOO tall to ride the bus. 14yo Brazilian girl says she can longer go to school because she is too tall for the bus. Sad.

Shocker: DC Taxis Don’t Like to Pick Up Blind People With Guide Dogs.

  4. I briefly reviewed a book my mother purchased for my daughter entitled how to be a princess.

I wrote about a street harassment based on a comic.

I also posted about Jacob’s no retouching policy as being a step in the right direction, but not going nearly far enough.

A link sent to me by my brother contained an anorexia joke that got me thinking about my own relationship with food, exercise, and my body.

Coca-cola is closing 3 plants and blames a 2-cent a can tax, not the recent strike and their attempt at union breaking.

Lastly, I linked two Advice from a cartoon princess videos.

  5. I’ve launched a Twitter app to encourage discussion about better uses for the £20 million being spent on the upcoming UK pope visit:

    http://20million.org

We’ve currently had retweets from Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris. I’d love it if you could also help spread the word.

  6. Hi there. I’ve been subscribed to this blog forever, but this is the first time I’ve commented. I write a book review blog where I only review books written by women. This month, in anticipation of banned book week, a lot of the bloggers are writing posts related to censorship and the freedom to read. I’ve made a list of banned books written by women, so if anyone wants to take part in banned book week/month, you could stop by and get a list of books to read. I’ll also be doing reviews of a few frequently banned books later in the month. is a link to my list. I can’t wait to read all of your posts!

  7. R. Kelly: When A Woman Loves: Looking at why she should not rush out to buy R Kelly’s no CD. Race does not trump gender.

Strippers Protest Christian Fundamentalist Church: A fundie group decided to shut down a strip club but the women turned the situation around and protested right back.

Missy Ann Syndrome: Purse Grabbing White Women: Looking at this racist action and how Black people respond to it.

Are You Really Broke?: Looking at recognizing economic privilege.

I am neither male or female, but I have tried to be both: A great testimony from a inter sex person about her fears and how people read her body.

No Labels for Figure Skater Johnny Weir: Looking at how Weir refuses to declare his sexuality.

“Out in Silence” The LGBT Community in Small Town U.S.A.: Looking at a great documentary regarding the experience of a 16 year old gay kid regarding the homophobia in a small town.

True Blood: Fresh Blood: Looking at the latest True Blood Episode and True Blood: A Tribute To All We Have Lost: Looking at all who have died since the start of the show.

  8. This week at re:Cycling, we’ve got posts about menopausal women targeted by marketing, the new Canadian Stayfree internet ad campaign (including a guest post from Chella Quint), infertility and physical fitness, and our regularly featured weekend links.

  9. After taking most of the summer off, I wrote about the rape epidemic in the DR Congo — and how the U.N. has failed in its response.TRIGGER WARNING.

(This post is one that almost pushed me into the “despair” realm. One thing I found in the course of researching that perhaps I should have expected but absolutely did not: U.N. peacekeepers in the DR Congo have not only been ineffective in preventing sexual violence by rebels, they themselves been accused of raping Congolese women and girls. Unforgivable.)

  10. I was raised in a union family. I think it is incumbent upon people who are struggling for their own rights to honor picket lines put up by those workers engaged in union drives and strikes.

Therefore I was dismayed this week to learn The National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association was holding a convention at San Francisco’s Hyatt Regency Hotel this weekend.

Workers rights including the right to unionize are human rights and are as important as other civil rights.

  11. Sooo, this week was my first week of classes, I didn’t write much, BUT: I just wrote a post on how not to be an asshole to someone with celiac’s disease, I posted a drunken music rant where folks discussed Billy Joel’s crappiest song (there are so many, I KNOW), I explained why I identify myself as “crazy,” and my cat “helped” me change the sheets. I also started an open thread, but the comments turned into a discussion between a reader and I about orgasms. Feel free to weigh in!

  12. New posts up on Elysium Avenue!
I wrote a humorous post about my long time obsession with John Cusack http://elysiumavenue.wordpress.com/2010/08/30/its-_____-and-hes-wearing-the-coat/

as well as the paralyzing force of perfectionism http://elysiumavenue.wordpress.com/2010/09/02/so-im-thinking-fit-in-a-nice-suicide-before-lunch/

Lisa wrote about her body and body normality http://elysiumavenue.wordpress.com/2010/08/31/normal-women/

Natasha wrote about having a song that lasts you your whole life
    http://elysiumavenue.wordpress.com/2010/08/29/run-away/

and about learning to cook a new curry for friends

  13. I’ve been posting about the Seattle teacher contract negotiations. A sticking point was the use of student test scores to evaluate teachers – which is being tried nationwide despite opposition from the National Education Association (NEA). After a bunch of serious posts, I decided to just have fun & post what Pippi Longstocking would do on test day.

What Would Pippi Do on Test Day?

  14. Read the Gender Across Borders post for the THIS IS WHAT A YOUNG FEMINIST LOOKS LIKE carnival.

After that, read up on the Guerrilla Girls on Tour!

BTW, we have a fancy new podcast–you can add it to your subscriptions via iTunes or other media player

We covered a range of topics in the past week, including Prosecuting HIV in Germany, feminism and porn star, Nina Hartley, and Miss Universe, Jimena Navarrete’s views on gay marriage. Come on over, and leave us your thoughts and experiences 🙂

  15. As an indie game developer, I decided to write a scathing critique of the video game industry’s latest attempt to use and abuse women’s bodies for fun and profit.

It is in very professional language (prepare for exceptional levels of cursing), but it’s funny, or at least I thought it was funny at the time. I still can’t look at the last picture and caption without giggling, then feeling slightly uncomfortable, then giggling again (I think it’s something about the expression).

  16. With Allison here. Are we getting any follow-up on the Fat and Health post? Or is it all done and dusted as far as Feministe is concerned?

  17. Alternative holidays! Use these as an occasion for organizing, personal action, education opportunities, or simply alternatives to holidays celebrating jingoism, imperialism, genocide, and consumerism. The list is incomplete and US-heavy. Please add any additions in the comments!!

  18. I know it’s not Sunday, but I thought I’d share my follow up to the guy speak piece I wrote a week ago. The girl talk article was just as infuriating and sexist. No surprise.

I also tried my hand at making a comic. I had to poke some fun at Sarah Palin’s ridiculousMama Grizzly line. She makes me sad in the brain.

  19. I wrote a post about advertisements in pornography. I used some examples from the 2nd most popular porn website in the world, and the 1st most popular free porn website. And despite how mainstream this site is, the advertisements it hosts are truly frightening and disgusting… to spoil the suspense for yall, they are ads featuring women who have makeup and photoshopping so that they look as young as 9. And this is all on a mainstream website; this is what is supposed to be normal.

I’m no prude, but porn culture sickens and scares me.
