GMVW*: Sara Bareilles

A friend passed this to me yesterday, and at first I was like, “Ok, fun and poppy, pretty good. Kinda empowering.” But then, bizarrely, I woke up this morning and it was the only thing I wanted to listen to (over, and over and over**). And now, I’m now passing the infection on to all the Feministe blog-readers.

You’re welcome.

* Gratuitous Music Video Wednesday
** I can’t be the only one that does this, though I might bring playing the same song on repeat to a new level. My iTunes “Top 25 Most Played” is an embarrassment. For example: “Toto, Africa, Plays: 184 (And that was probably in succession over the course of two very emotional weeks in February).

Hat tip to Maria for the vid!

Full lyrics after the jump.

Sara Bareilles
“King of Anything”

Keep drinking coffee, stare me down across the table
While I look outside
So many things I’d say if only I were able
But I just keep quiet and count the cars that pass by

You’ve got opinions, man
We’re all entitled to ‘em, but I never asked
So let me thank you for your time, and try not to waste anymore of mine
And get out of here fast

I hate to break it to you babe, but I’m not drowning
There’s no one here to save

Who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be?
Who died and made you king of anything?

You sound so innocent, all full of good intent
Swear you know best
But you expect me to jump up on board with you
And ride off into your delusional sunset

I’m not the one who’s lost with no direction
But you’ll never see

You’re so busy making maps with my name on them in all caps
You got the talking down, just not the listening

And who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be?
Who died and made you king of anything?

All my life I’ve tried to make everybody happy
While I just hurt and hide
Waiting for someone to tell me it’s my turn to decide

Who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be?
Who died and made you king of anything?

Who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be?
Who died and made you king of anything?

Let me hold your crown, babe.

  1. I can’t be the only one that does this, though I might bring playing the same song on repeat to a new level. My iTunes “Top 25 Most Played” is an embarrassment.

No. You’re not the only one who does this. I tend to repeat artists, though, rather than individual songs. I think Rufus Wainwright occupies half of my top 25.

  2. I used to find that Toto song addictive, despite finding the lyrics problematic. Then, I went to Kenya on a work trip, and managed to squeeze in a visit a park w/ a nice view of Kilimanjaro, rising like Olympus or whatnot (Kilimanjaro is just across the border in Tanzania from this park, Amboeseli). Even though my visit there was pretty touristy, something in my head shifted, and the song started to irritate me. Go figure. It’s a nice way to exorcise Toto addiction, if you can swing it.

  3. I do the same thing, don’t worry. “Sour Times” by Portishead is my personal obsession.

  4. I love Sara Bareilles. The one I have on repeat is Lucy Woodward, though. I love her so much but no one seems to know her, which is a crime!

  5. Gosh dang you. I saw her on TV months ago and made a note to eventually download one of her CDs.

Now I have to go buy it!

  6. I don’t repeat very often, but there are some songs that I’ll get the urge to play two or three times in a row. Not usually more than that.

Suzanne Vega: “Tired of Sleeping” and “Blood Makes Noise”
Regina Spektor: “Frequency” and “Two Birds” (it has a fun baseline)
Gogol Bordello: “My Strange Uncles from Abroad” and “Start Wearing Purple”
    Liz Phair: “Uncle Alvarez”
    Red Hot Chili Peppers: “Snow”
And more They Might be Giants songs than I can think of right now.

  7. Sarah Bareilles hooked me too….I think it was “Fairytale” that did it since I was in the middle of a break up at the time. Good song anyway.

  8. Great song! Thanks for posting. I LOVE the lyrics, I can so relate. Oh and I listen to a song over and over again all the time…my roomies and friends go nuts from it but when I love a song I crave it so why not indulge? Thanks for your great blog!

  9. Now I have her song stuck in my head. I doubt I’ll be getting it out any time soon. I forgot how much I like Sara’s music, incredibly catchy.

I have one song on itunes that has been played probably close to 400 times within the past year or two. You are not alone.

  10. Oh goodness…I have a new favorite song! This is gonna make my boss a whole lot easier to deal with…Thank you for shareing!

  11. In yet another way I’m becoming my father…and playing the catchy new song I identify with over and over again until someone physically forces me to stop. Great tune, thanks for sharing it.
