Goodbye Wilma Mankiller

Very sad news: Wilma Mankiller, the first female Cherokee Nation chief, passed away today. She was 64. As Chief, she focused on social welfare, building new health centers and promoting children’s programs. She tripled tribe enrollment and doubled employment. After leaving her position, she accepted a teaching position at Dartmouth College.

She will be missed. Her life was an inspiration and a blessing.

  1. I would note that the fact that her name was “Mankiller” is pure coincidence and not a statement of policy.

  2. RIP, Madam. She was one of the inspirations I learned about in college, and I really admired all she’d done.
