Friday Random Ten – the Snowpocalypse part 30454 edition

There’s a huge snowstorm in New York right now, and it’s making me wish I was still in the southern hemisphere. Ugh. Anyone having a better Friday?

The Friday Video this week is a song that I’ve been a little obsessed with for the past few months — I admittedly think the TI version is the jam, even if it’s not the most feminist thing in the world, but having a lady sing it? In a really fun sex-positive video where she works at Toys in Babeland and her customers include Daniel V from Project Runway and Andy from Weeds? Love.

Now, the Ten. Add yours in the comments.

1. The Pogues – Fiesta
2. Mike Wexler – Pneuma
3. Tom Waits – How’s It Gonna End?
4. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Man
5. Sally Shapiro – Time to Let Go
6. Santogold – Starstruck
7. Sufjan Stevens – Size Too Small
8. Mos Def & Faith Evans – Brown Sugar
9. Voxtrot – Blood Red Blood
10. Bon Iver – Skinny Love

  1. Ah glorious return of the Haywood Jablome joke, as seen on 6ft Under!

I must admit I don’t really understand the point of the Anya Marina cover, it just seems to be like, “Hey I’m waifish and not at all like a black man!” which is not, in and of itself hilarious to me.

  2. Awww, this was adorable! The lesbian couple was too cute, with the one looked a little bit scared by whatever thing her partner picked up. I just went to Babeland a couple of months ago for the first time, and it really was just as warm and inviting as it looks. I’m going to have this in my head all day!

  6. When you know you’re going to get snowed in, just buy some Bailey’s. Then you’ll want the snow to fall!

  7. Chocolate Tort – the second toy picked up by the lesbian woman with the short haircut was a Bloomy, an anal toy from Fun Factory. 😀

Love the video (the fact that the only not-white person in it was stealing made me uncomfortable, but otherwise) on many levels! It’s pretty, how it sounds and how it looks, it’s sexy, and her singing it without any changed words was excellent. Like talking about having that “big boy in your life” and panning to dildos. Excellent! lol

What is “sex positive?” I’ve heard this but never really knew what it meant. Anybody?

Sex-positive pretty much means supportive of all and any sexuality that is consensual. Often used to mean a feminist who supports whatever sexual flavour one prefers, as opposed to viewing certain sex acts as innately wrong/patriarchal.

In this case it means more she’s supportive and comfortable with alternative sexualities, sex toys, and being a sexual aggressor (in the good way!) and with making it into a video that is sexual without her being a sexual object. IMO. 🙂

    Thanks for sharing!
