Hey, It’s Human Rights Day

Happy Human Rights Day!

Did you know such a day even existed? Well it does!

How will you be celebrating?

And, if you work for a human rights organization, feel free to plug in whatever action* you’d like folks to take today. Let’s spread the love, shall we?

*Please don’t just make an appeal for donations or I’ll delete the comment. I know it’s hard, but I’d prefer it if we stuck to plain old activism for the day. And I know donations are crucial, I work in the non-profit sector. But, again, just for today.

  1. Well, being in the UK I’ve already had time to take action… I was in London, outside the Ugandan High Commission, protesting the anti-homosexuality bill. It was a small protest, but I was glad to be there with my friends to yell and listen to the speakers and wear my rainbow scarf.

  2. You can take action to end violence against women through UNIFEM’s Say NO-UNiTE to End Violence Against Women campaign.

Visit http://saynotoviolence.org/ to sign up for actions to take online or search for actions to join in your part of the world.

  4. I wrote 13 letters for Amnesty International’s Write-a-Thon. Most of the letters were to officials in my own country about human rights abuses here, sadly enough.

  5. Although its over now, I attended a panel discussion in Ottawa about the War on Terror and Human Rights, which featured Mohamed and Sophie Harkat. Mohamed Harkat is one of the men currently being held under a security certificate in Canada. It was a great discussion, and great to hear from him about his experiences.
I also wrote a letter to the Prime Minister urging him to end the security certificate program. So that was my activism for the day!

  6. Well, being in the UK, I didn’t see this post until International Human Rights Day was over. (Usually happens with Self-Promotion Sunday, too, not that it really matters when it can be Self-Promotion Monday just as easily.)

Yay Jo! If I’d been able to get to Trafalgar Square for noon yesterday, I’d have gone.

  7. How pathetic is it that we need an official “day” to recognize human rights?

Perhaps they should also institute International Puppies Day and International Chocolate Sure Is Delicious Day. OH WAIT, people already recognize those things.

  8. At the Jewish Women’s Archive (jwa.org), we are honoring Dr. Lynn Amowitz, a physician who has dedicated her life to women’s and human rights causes. Take a moment to learn her story (and listen to audio clips of her telling her story) at our blog, Jewesses with Attitude!
