Shameless Self-Promotion Sunday October 11, 2009 Jill You know what to do: Leave a comment with a link to something you’ve written recently, and a short description. Don’t just link to your whole blog.
This week at Yes Means Yes: In response to a thread about alcohol and consent at Feministing Community, I posted a personal story titled Too Drunk To Fuck (cross-posted to Feministing Community, where it produced a brief discussion) about a potential threesome that never happened because our potential third got drunk. As I said in the post, it’s an anecdote, not a fable. In this area, universal rules are hard to come by, so all I can say with confidence is what I am comfortable with and the decisions we made. Like many other folks, Phaedra Starling’s guest post at Shapely Prose really made an impression on me. I added my thoughts on what it means for a man to put his desire to interact with a woman over her right to decide she doesn’t want to be bothered, calling it Shroedinger’s Rapist And The Imagined Right To Intrude.
Two posts from the Ableist Language Profile series on the brand new FWD/Forward group blog written by feminists with disabilities: a profile on cretin and one on idiot. On this ain’t livin’, I wrote about the surge of YA fiction featuring vampires and the objectification of women’s bodies in advertising, often with violent overtones.
Black Hair and the Confessional: Looking at why it is problematic for Chris Rock to suggest that Black women need to tell their hair stories. Hey Hey Saturday Night: White People In Blackface Is Racist: Examining why a performance of blackface on a popular Australian show is extremely problematic. Fat Hatred and Disability on The Cleveland Show: Examining the myths that come with fat and disability. Chicks with Dicks: Looking at the everyday harassment that trans women must face that we have normalized.
Whip It [Movie Monday]: this is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time! The Politics of Duplicity: a book review for a book about Ceausescu’s Romania and the dangers of anti-abortion regimes. Why Women Have Sex: there’s a new book based on a psychological study that looks at the motivations behind female sexuality…thoughts? http://leapersjournal.blogspot.com/2009/10/letter-to-my-senator.html Wrote a letter to my senators informing them I’m disappointed in their votes on Al Franken’s legislation.
Healthcare and vulvodynia – A post I wrote about dealing with US healthcare and vulvar pain. Even with insurance, it’s expensive for me. I can only imagine how much harder it must be for those without insurance.
Interview with the band Journey and the new lead singer on his path to stardom. http://actsoffaithinloveandlife.blogspot.com/2009/10/how-one-mans-journey-led-him-to.html Do you love design and home improvement shows as much as I do?! http://actsoffaithinloveandlife.blogspot.com/2009/10/saturday-design-porn.html More inspiration of the young woman who went from being homeless to Harvard. http://actsoffaithinloveandlife.blogspot.com/2009/10/believe-it-and-live-it-khadijah.html
Adult chocolate chip cookies anyone? http://cookandhook.wordpress.com/2009/10/04/adult-chocolate-chip-cookies/
I forgot to mention this weeks Sunday Shame: Vampire Edition…drop by and confess either your love of the vampire or any other member of the occult.
I wrote about Mad Men. Twice. The first is about gender, the second is about race. Then I wrote something very silly about tyra banks on Gossip Girl.
Chris Rock pulls a Steve Harvey and is accused of misappropriating work originated by black women. http://actsoffaithinloveandlife.blogspot.com/2009/10/chris-rock-pulls-steve-harvey-stop.html Did the NYPD render evidence useless to help a cop get away with a DWI that killed a young black woman? http://actsoffaithinloveandlife.blogspot.com/2009/10/nypd-coverup-in-andrew-kellys-dwi.html

I wrote a response to a post on Shapely Prose about women being harassed and propositioned in public. My post is about a recent incident I experienced and getting up the nerve to stand up for myself. http://jennyknopinski.wordpress.com/2009/10/08/hey-baby-hey-baby-on-being-a-woman-in-public/
I talk about why the ‘Christian Right’ troubles me. Derailing conversations by asking for definitions is not really okay. And I pour scorn on the phrase ‘terrorist threat’, and explain why it’s dangerous.
I blogged about my very first pro-choice protest ever. http://johnnykaje.wordpress.com/2009/10/07/choice-chain/ Also, hopefully this new blog of mine will become part of my local paper’s blogging community. Blogging about feminism and liberalism for a rural Bible Belt paper! Daunting! Yet irresistible!
As others have, wrote a bit about the kerfuffle in Australia, and roped in statistics from the Okcupid blog about what races respond to whom. Check it.
1. “My tits are real, and so is my penis – How out is too out? Gender, identity politics, and bumper stickers. 2. Emoticons 😉 – Are emoticons good? Bad? Neither? 3. Mac frustrations, a month later – I switched from Ubuntu to a Mac about a month ago. I mostly like it, but still have some yet-to-be-solved frustrations…
The Guy’s Guide to Feminism returns after a brief hiatus with a piece about the power of stereotypes in the Fox series Glee: “Amplification Through Simplification”
Today in “are you fucking kidding me?”: Rob Pattinson is apparently on the list of 2009’s most influential men. still can’t figure out how he douchebagged his way onto that list… Fuzz Therapy provided by MommyGrandeur. it also explains why i’ve not written so much lately. Sixth graders in Sweden file complaint against Toys R Us for gender stereotyping: i now love kids. Bonus Fuzz: this pic of my kitty was too cute, i couldn’t wait till Wednesday to post it. Want to illustrate the disposability of women?: on the new Kleenex campaign called “get mommed.” seriously, wth?
I was at Austin City Limits last Sunday (pictures here) and didn’t get to put anything up, so here’s a couple links from the past two weeks: Obligatory Polanski post Tell me again how they’re not racist? – a post with photos of blatantly racist signs at teabagger protests Update. I recently contacted my old dance studio about a massage therapist they recommended to me who had molested me when I was young. Their response was amazingly bad. Seriously, break out your Victim Blaming Bingo cards, because we’ve got almost all of them right here.
I just did a Shakespearean blank verse response to the latest crazed pro-lifer thing: Cupcakes for pro-life. Because not everyone is born! their website (down due to bandwidth trouble) says.
(I think my comment got spammed? Trying again.) Pass/Fail Tests, Pit Stops, And Other Problems Of Transmasculine Identity.
Brian wrote about the “porn makes you gay” thing and why every possible aspect of it is fail in How to Save Yourself From Teh Gay, and I discussed torture using the opera Tosca as a starting point in Tosca and Torture.
With the crummy economy any time I can help make a donation for free I jump on it. Here’s a way you can donate to Susan G. Komen for free.
I revisited the problem of saving breasts, not women from cancer. While it’s hard to discuss this without seeming anti-sex and anti-fun, I have to wonder why women are baring their “boobies” to raise money to fight breast cancer, yet it’s practically inconceivable that men would show the full monty in the fight against testicular and prostate cancer. True to my habit of writing about things once they’re already old news, I posted a couple of commentaries on David Letterman’s affairs. I was irked at how his initial confession was mistaken for honesty, when actually it was a skillful example of spin. And while I don’t see any evidence that he violated sexual harassment law, I argued that feminists have every reason to be concerned about the political and ethical impact of horndogging bosses.
I posted great posts! “Our TV show’s like a family!”, about Kathy Griffin’s take on sexism in the comedy industry. “Normal Asian family on TV!”, about TV commercial with nonwhite familes. This commercial turned out well, but, about grown men luring children with puppies. Data that should help me when I complain to my friends., about the difficulties of dating as a black woman in the United States. Backstreet Boys on Conan!, which is what it sounds like. Enjoy!
This week in Evil Slutopia: We waged war on the AFA’s war on the “War on Christmas”, we compiled the Top 10 worst and overused defenses of Roman Polanski that we wish people would stop saying, and we reviewed Diablo Cody’s movie Jennifer’s Body.
AutisMonster, Inc. which is about the way disabled people and autistics in particular are portrayed in the media. I’m also going to shamelessly plug our blog Turner & Kowalski, because we only started 9 weeks ago. It’s a radical disability rights community blog written by autistics.
Reflections on Being a Disabled Model: I, in a return to blogging after an extended hiatus, reflect on what it means for me to continue to art model despite experiencing an accident that resulted in multiple disabilities.
A new poem, Mementos: Two Women Speak as More than One on my blog, and a page of poetry and photography at Blue Turtle Crossing.
Please check out the first episode in a new webisode series I created called,The Period Fairy. http://www.periodfairy.com She’s the one thing all women have in common without regard to race, creed or political affiliation! She’s worked with every woman in history, knows all the secrets and she’s been around since the beginning, her first client was Eve. Please check it our for a laugh. Thanks.

The Austin Chronicles: Robots, Beer and Socio-economics is the next in my series about going to Texas to get a masters degree in Women’s in Gender Studies during the end of the Bush Administration. It’s my attempt at memoir, and even a little humor, while still making a critique. I’d love to know if folks think I’m at all successful.

Safe Harbor Candlelight Vigil for Victims of Domestic Violence Real Housewives of Atlanta thread!–don’t be tardy for the party!
So this is my first time posting anything for Shameless Self-Promo Sunday and also my first crack at writing a blog that isn’t “today I did blah blah blah.” It’s a blog called the Certifiable Wenches with a few of my online amigas. I’m not exactly treading new ground here, so be gentle. Girl Love 101 – All the Diablo Cody hate that goes around the internet in cycles made me think about the whole Riot Grrrl concept of Girl Love. My Polanski Rant – It sucks to be a filmmaker at a time when some of your idols and friends are defending this creep.
I wrote about the parallels and differences between the pregnancies of Quinn in Glee and Stacy in Fast Times at Ridgemont High – Abortion in Fast Times vs. Glee I’m also organizing a conference on education reform that I’m really excited about! Educamp 2010
For the second time, in a case of catastrophic child neglect by two parents living in the same house, the Australian legal system thinks it’s not possible for the father to be as responsible – or culpable – as the mother.
@stephcrippen: I just wanted to point out that not all women get periods. Some women are born without the period-making-bits, but they are still women.
This week I talked about an article praising the abstinence-only sex website Sense and Sexuality and the connection between purity culture and rape culture. My next post will be about how Austen is used by abstinence-only organizations and individuals. http://austintotamu.blogspot.com/2009/10/sense-and-sexuality.html
This week at Happy Bodies, Lisa talked about Reclaiming Fat, and I continued considering the ESPN Magazine’s Body Issue.
@PharaohKatt: I had made a similar comment over at the “Period Fairy” website yesterday, but saw today that the moderator rejected it. I actually worded it really politely (didn’t say “you guys are assholes for ignoring/being unaware of trans & intersex issues” but just gently asked them to consider the women who are exceptions) so I’m sort of surprised they rejected it.
re: “Period Fairy,” this would just be yet more evidence in favor of my long-standing theory that people who make “Yoko broke up the Beatles” jokes (see the about page) are just not worth the effort. (There are obviously far bigger issues with the site than that. And there are pretty clearly other things throughout it that would lead you the same conclusion — it’s one I reached before the Yoko joke was pointed out to me. I just enjoy passing along that particular rule of thumb, because there are so many varied situations in which it comes in handy.)
