Popular conservative website says a military coup would “resolve the Obama problem”

He’s careful to say he’s not advocating a military coup, he’s just saying

There is a remote, although gaining, possibility America’s military will intervene as a last resort to resolve the Obama problem. Don’t dismiss it as unrealistic.

America isn’t the Third World. If a military coup does occur here it will be civilized. That it has never happened doesn’t mean it wont. Describing what may be afoot is not to advocate it.

Thanks to Mind for the link.

  1. OMG. Frightening. Really, truly frightening.

Nona – They don’t forget, but I’m sure they think most of it was through cheating and deception and whatnot. You know – the stuff that liberals said about Bush’s elections (or, I should say, “election” and election, considering 2000…bleh) and that they told us made us stupid and umAmerican and evil and shit. They can’t comprehend that a large majority of the country did actually vote for him.

A “civilized” military coup? For one thing, ummm…yeah right. For another, these people wouldn’t know civilized if it, um…invited them for tea.

  2. Also, the military has absolutely no fucking interest in this plan.

You know who actually serves in the military? A disproportionately high number of black men and women. And Latino/a immigrants trying to earn their citizenship, many of whom come from countries where military juntas are no abstract mindgame.
And, above all, the military is people who have a profound respect for hierarchy, rules, the American tradition, and the legitimate Commander in Chief.

Yeah, there are some rightwing nutbags who come out of the military who might talk about this. But a) a lot of them are dishonorably discharged, and b) even the skinheads who stay in aren’t gonna be high ranking officers who can pull this off.

  3. Well, a “military coup” has occurred here–the Revolutionary War? And it is the primary reason we have 5 branches of the military (at least–depending on how they’re counted) organized under a convoluted hierarchy that disseminates power across the branches, but under the authority of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Obama.

I tried to look the original idiotic comment on Newsmax and couldn’t find it. Maybe someone there decided a claim of a credible threat on the president of the U.S. was a bad idea?

  4. Full text of the original column is still available via Talking Points Memo here.

It is grossly inaccurate to describe the American Revolutionary War as a military coup. For one major point, the British government wasn’t toppled; the Crown & Parliament still ruled Great Britain and plenty of other colonies when it was over. For another, it wasn’t carried out by a tiny elite cadre.

Don’t give the idiots any further verbal ammunition, please. I’m a pacifist and far from a fan of the US military, but there has never been a military coup in this country (thank God) – don’t encourage anyone to mix up the Founding with a junta.

  5. “In the 2008 election, that was the wistful, self-indulgent, indifferent reliance on abnegation of personal responsibility that has sunk the nation into this morass.”

That’s the climactic closing sentence. Wow! John L. Perry, besides being a fascist, is also a horrendous writer.

  6. “I found the original link, but it just goes to the index page now…so apparently they got a bit nervous…”

Yeah, they got negative links from Ace and Hot Air and a bunch of sites and got flooded with complaints.

  7. Describing what may be afoot is not to advocate it.

Will the day come when patriotic general and flag officers sit down with the president, or with those who control him, and work out the national equivalent of a “family intervention,” with some form of limited, shared responsibility?

Imagine a bloodless coup to restore and defend the Constitution through an interim administration that would do the serious business of governing and defending the nation. Skilled, military-trained, nation-builders would replace accountability-challenged, radical-left commissars. Having bonded with his twin teleprompters, the president would be detailed for ceremonial speech-making.

“You’re reading Newsmax, the show that doesn’t condone the cool crime of treason!”

  8. This guy’s a moron.

He is apparently unaware that the true strength of the military, the enlisted corps, takes a oath to obey the orders of the President of the United States.

Those “patriotic general and flag officers” know that if they show bad faith to that oath none of the enlisted men and women under them will ever trust or respect ever again.

After all, when a dog bites the master who feeds it, none of the children in the house wants the dog around either.

  9. And, of course, if any left winger had said something similar to this when George Bush was president, said left winger would have been on a plane to Gitmo quicker than you could say “military coup.”

Those whacky right wing nuts, what will come spewing out of their mouths next?
