Shameless Self-Promotion Sunday August 23, 2009 Cara You know the drill — leave your links to posts you’ve written this week in the comments, and provide a brief description. And be specific, rather than just linking to your whole blog.
Brief history on Hello Kitty’s creator Yuko Shimizu – a wonderful designer who was overlooked by Sanrio until her departure – in which the company more than happily stole and exploited her idea. Queen of Cute: Hello Kitty’s Yuko Shimizu
I wrote a bit of a follow up on my earlier discussion of the gay allegory in True Blood. I’ve been annoyed at the portrayal of characters with Down Syndrome on Secret Life of the American Teenager and I wrote about the premiere of Top Chef with a bit of a Fat Acceptance gripe.
I wrote a small post about the crazies bringing guns to protests outside where the president is speaking. When I posted a link to an article about that subject on Facebook, a straight white conservative friend decided it had to be all about him. Also: WTF Translation Party?
This week at Adventures of a Young Feminist: No One Can Be Perfect 100% of the Time: how I view my sometimes problematic taste in music in light of my feminist values. I Don’t Want to be a Hepburn or a Hilton: a look at the virgin/whore dichotomy through relationship books. Where Did Teens Sexuality Go?: what is so magical about the number 18 when it comes to teens expressing their sexuality? Are Clothes More Important Than Intellect?: how the media’s focus on Michelle Obama’s clothes is a way of silencing her from meaningful political involvement. Hollister Continues Sexualization of Teens: Hollister has a new line of sexually suggestive t-shirts marketed towards young teens. Slaying the Vamps: the feminist implications of the strong women of Buffy is examined in this edition of Feminist Flashback Friday. Breast Implications: Kiera in Advertisements: how Kiera Knightly’s breasts are airbrushed in ads and the societal implications of that. Isn’t It Romantic: Twilight fans are getting a little too out of control for my taste.
On the ableism in the phrase “blinded by privilege”. Kicking off Success Sunday today with the story of Dr. Roxanne Shante, the first female rap star, who was dumped by her label but used a clause in her contract to get Warner Brothers to pay for her college education, culminating in a PhD from Cornell. On a Utah trans woman, Candice Metzler, and her struggles with employment, and attitude towards BTIALGQ individuals in Utah and Salt Lake City. On the transmisogyny, racism, and sexism in MediaTakeOut’s accusation that singer Kat DeLuna has a penis. A recipe for avocado macaroni salad. A guest post from Recursive Paradox on cis privilege On Mad Men (I know, I’m getting sick of it too) race and Matt Weiner’s white privilege Kate Blatt was told to give a doctor’s note and a picture of her genitals on condition of her employment with Manpower staffing services. I also included contact information for anyone who wants to tell Manpower how fucked up that is.

Here’s a quick write-up I did about “Inglorious Basterds” and it’s heroine, Shosanna http://mywordnerdery.blogspot.com/2009/08/inglorious-basterds-or-shoshannas-show.html
I joined other United Methodist young adults writing about our call to ordained ministry. I also started Beauty for Ashes, a series of brief posts looking at ways that people are bringing beauty out of ugliness or life out of death. The first one links to a kick-ass re-working of that offensive PETA billboard, and the second one is about Detroit Residents doing urban farming/gardening.
*My* Privilege Regarding the careless remarks I made a week ago here @ Feministe re: the posts on polyamory. Also includes two links for education and information that I found immensely helpful. My being called out has not only led to greater understanding and awareness on my part, but also to a great conversation. So, be sure to check out the comment thread. I articulated some thoughts about tattooed women in On Ownership, Marking the Body, and Tattooing As a Feminist Act. I also attempted to compress my rage about the media’s treatment of the Caster Semenya situation into something vaguely coherent in Sex, Gender, and Caster Semenya.
A post on Twilight Merchandise and how it enforces the messed up relationship dynamics in the book http://mzbitca.wordpress.com/2009/08/21/sure-theres-nothing-creepy-about-twilight/ another edition of FML Fail, this time with racism http://mzbitca.wordpress.com/2009/08/21/fml-racist-fail/

I was all about the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) and their passage of a progressive social statement. They also voted to ordain people in same-sex relationships! It’s been a good week to be Lutheran. Michele Bachmann was also surprisingly pro-choice and we hosted the Second Carnival of Feminists.
i got some Fuzz Therapy for you all to enjoy, featuring two grumpy pets of mine. Little people = little burgers? looking at the new ad campaign for Jack in the Box. On swallowing shit: ““Just complain,” people say. “Accessibility problems? Talk to people! They all mean well! All you have to do is ask!” Now, what happens is that every single time I want to ask for an accommodation, I get to make a risk assessment. I get to wonder, however momentarily, if this is the time that I’ll be attacked.” On unexamined privileges and unconscious behaviours: on conscious racism, unconscious racism, and outrage National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Awards: Results: The nation’s top honours. I wrote posts! Part of the Problem, about my dating woes as a black lady. 🙁 I would go to a movie with both of them., about my ongoing desire to hang out with both Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Elijah Wood. I thought I’d like Drop Dead Diva, about the show on Lifetime and Househusbands of Hollywood. Whenever I hear the words “Thomas Jefferson”, about the slave owner/rapist. Like Hello Kitty, about The Slanted Screen, a film about Asian actors in television and movies. Enjoy!

1. Trans Form works-in-progress video – A ~8 minute clip about getting my name changed, from my upcoming one-woman show ‘Trans Form.’ 2. 2 Hot Transsexuals Finally Give Some Answers – I know I’m late in posting this but, if you haven’t seen it, it’s hilarious. 3. That’s So Gay – GLSEN and the Ad Council have launched a campaign against using ‘gay’ as an insult. Penny Arcade posted a comic indicating they think the campaign will not be very valuable, and I post my response.
A really light week this week, but I did manage to put up some thoughts about Mad Men’s portrayal of homosexuality: Mad Men, Sal Romano, and the Closet of the Early Sixties.
How jealousy, transphobia and cis privilege not concern of an advantage rules this fervor about testing the gender of champion Caster Semanya. http://actsoffaithinloveandlife.blogspot.com/2009/08/so-when-black-woman-beats-you-fair.html Why ALL female bloggers must take internet security of their online lives seriously. http://actsoffaithinloveandlife.blogspot.com/2009/08/mind-your-internet-ps-qs-or-else.html

Here’s a group of feminist(-friendly) blogs from Australia and New Zealand you should check out! I have some homework for the abled among you re: accessibility.
This Week At Merda D’Artista Caster Semenya, womens colleges, and wondering what makes a woman a woman in the first place: http://cannedartistshit.blogspot.com/2009/08/so-what-makes-woman-woman-precisely.html Project Runway glee: http://cannedartistshit.blogspot.com/2009/08/youre-either-in-or-youre-out-or-youre.html What to do when a Facebook friend sends you a series of messges telling you that you’re “not bringing glory to God”: http://cannedartistshit.blogspot.com/2009/08/they-will-know-that-we-are-christians.html I also started a series called “Dispatches From the Crazy BFA Community”, detailing some *headdesk* moments during a year and a half at a women’s college: http://cannedartistshit.blogspot.com/2009/08/dispatches-from-crazy-bfa-community.html (Eew! Breasts are gross!) http://cannedartistshit.blogspot.com/2009/08/dispatches-from-crazy-bfa-community_19.html (Sex is okay to have, and to talk about in the cafeteria, but it’s a verboted discussion topic in an art appreciation class)
Before We Even Talk Social Media 101 – I take the delusion out of “Social Media.” Why can’t we have a story about an all-female society that doesn’t suck?!?.
That horrid Steve Harvey book that was potentially plagiarized is being made into a movie and why ALL women should be horrified. http://actsoffaithinloveandlife.blogspot.com/2009/08/oh-no-that-steve-harvey-book-is-being.html Why blacks need to be savvy voters and STOP counting on having a black president to “save” them! http://actsoffaithinloveandlife.blogspot.com/2009/08/waning-political-clout-of-blacks-in.html
I took a glance at the erotic imagery in the new British magazine, Filament. I think Filament has a great philosophy, but so far the pictures seem geared to young women (or at most, to older women who are turned on by very young men. In what I intended as constructive criticism (since I do strongly support breastfeeding), I looked at the costs to mothers of breastfeeding. And finally I turned a rant about a sexist quirk of my “good” health insurance into a plea for the public option.
The Illinois Family Institute, a right wing Christian organization famous for their homophobic activities, is now targeting an atheist public school teacher. They’re telling parents to pull their students out of his class simply because he’s an atheist and blogs about his beliefs. He never mentions it in the classroom, but they don’t care – simply having an atheist as a positive role model is horrible.
Just a couple of posts worth mentioning this week: A book review of Gillian Tett’s Fool’s Gold (with a particular mention of Blythe Masters, cos of being a feminist blog and all!) My initial take on the Caster Semenya controversy.
In his pick of the week, the writer confronts masculine privilege by examining the fall-out of his wife’s decision to keep her last name: Staring Down the Barrel of Masculine Privilege While the editor kicks off sports week on The Guy’s Guide to Feminism with a discussion of the racial bait-and-switch observed in the public’s reaction to Michael Vick’s reinstatement into the NFL: What Does The Birdcage Have to do With Michael Vick
I spent this week blogging about the politics of ‘cissexual’ and ‘cissexual privilege’. I video blog about ‘cissexual’ in the whipping girl I give detailed response to Rachel from thefeministagenda I made a video response critiquing the idea that no-hormone transgendered people have more privilege the other transgendered people
I have the 3rd Asian Women Blog Carnival up! ^^ Do come check it out! A maudlin thought on how I become less knowledgeable with more education. And some contemplation on the term “China doll”. I’m hoping for some feedback here.
For the sake of your health…don’t skip happy hour about the health benefits of beer for women. Women in the Boardroom about Norway’s mandated corporate diversity. Too fast to be a girl about the gender test for South African sprinter Canter Semenya. Choosing Security Over Environmental Justice? Not Exactly about a new law allowing a pipeline from Canadian deposits of oil sands to cross borders into the U.S.; this law will cause environmental and health effects. Finally, Gender Across Borders is looking for EDITORS! More info click here.
Female autonomy in a patriarchal, anti-choice culture: Some thoughts on Kourtney Kardashian’s (and the media’s) understanding of her decision making process concerning an unplanned pregnancy. and How to be Fauxgressive: A timeline of the continuing and unmitigated FAIL concerning unexamined privilege and inclusiveness at We Are the Real Deal.
Just One More Week to Enter to Win a Freestyle Vibrator from Babeland! The Passionate Torah: Sex and Judaism: They starkly confront the challenge of reconciling sexuality and spirituality from the perspective of those who study, worship, and identify with the Torah and the Talmudic tradition of critical analysis, while also maintaining active feminist belief and commitments to social justice that often seem to conflict with Jewish law, at least as it has been traditionally construed. The Cheese Chronicles: A Journey through the Making and Selling of Cheese in America, from Field to Farm to Table: I detest the term foodie. My boyfriend teasingly calls me a foodie in his WASP-iest voice. It seems so pretentious, so elitist, so… stupid. I can’t deny, though, my great love and interest in all things food. Thirst: Tae-Joo is a modern update on the femme fatale of the ’40s, right down to the way she convinces Sang-Hyun to murder her husband, clutching his shoulder a la Norma Desmond. And as in the best traditional noir films, it is she who steals the show and whose story we ultimately remember most. This is due in no small part to Kim, who is both classic and creative in her journey from a ghost of a young girl to a delightfully manipulative monster of a woman. To think that this young actor’s career has only just begun is truly exciting.
NY Times ‘Half The Sky’ Issue, The New York Times Sunday Magazine this weekend is a “special issue” about women in the developing world. So, how’d they do? Is CouchSurfing.org Safe for Women?, Since 2004 CouchSurfing.org has provided a way for budget travelers to connect with people across the world to take advantage of free hospitality—from a place to sleep to acting as a tour guide to simply meeting for a coffee. But do the site administrators go far enough to ensure its members aren’t sexual predators? From Page to Screen: Can Book Adaptations Bring Greater Visibility to Women Protagonists? , …though I can’t speak for everyone, and I do occasionally loves me some gratuitous explosions, I’m fairly certain that an adaptation of Eat, Pray, Love is going to get more women in theater seats than say, G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra. Feminists Protest PETA For a Change, On Tuesday evening, the Portland Feminist Action League stood inside (and then outside once they were kicked out) of Powell’s and gave Ingrid Newkirk (and her fans) a piece of their minds.
I look at the precedence for testing women’s gender in sports. A practice of which Caster Semenya is only the latest victim: http://loos-talk.blogspot.com/2009/08/caster-semenya-only-most-recent-victim.html
I take stock of the NYT’s write-up of women and poverty from last weekend, and find several lessons for the US concerning power, policy and knowledge. At least 1 in 5 Americans are poor; probably much more.
Daisy Bond wrote a post that introduced me to the term oppositional sexism. It’s great shorthand for ignoring overlap between men and women. I wrote about the impact in Cool Term: “Oppositional Sexism” is a Good Term for Confining, Stupid, and Deadly Assumptions.
Swapped blogs this week, but I wrote a little post about my frustration with conservatives using a feminist soapbox to promote their closed-mindedness.
On the labeling of women’s clothing as “boyfriend”, some good comments to continue the thoughts! http://piecesofstring.wordpress.com/2009/08/18/can-we-stop-labeling-womens-clothes-with-a-boyfriend-prefix/ A little bit on the NY Times mag interview with Sec of State Clinton, http://piecesofstring.wordpress.com/2009/08/20/a-new-gender-agenda/
Recently at the uncensored pen I brooded about sort-of friends and facebook etiquette, then I made a PSA about why I haven’t been writing & that I probably won’t for a while, but a few hours later I gave in and posted pictures and utter disgust for the overflowing trash receptacle in my complex.
Hmm…a bit quiet this week at City of Ladies. I did a Spotlight on Maine in the fight for marriage equality, since I spent the week there (post also has updates on Tel Aviv shooting), and also borrowed that video of Barney Frank being awesome.

You may recognize this artist from a previous mention on Feministing (http://www.feministing.com/archives/016451.html). Native New Yorker Melissa Giges (GUY-gus) has already won a loyal following with her mesmerizing performances and strikingly beautiful voice. Now, the singer-songwriter arrives in the national spotlight with the release of her national debut, Evident. http://www.suchcoolstuff.net/2009/08/melissa-giges.html You may also like this artist. Born in rural Oregon, Brandi Shearer’s singing career began by entertaining her grandmother with versions of “Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue” and “Isn’t It Romantic” played by numbers on a Sears Roebuck electric piano. Later, she moved to Europe where she learned about Billie Holiday and singing effectively in front of drunken audiences. French girls taught her to artfully apply makeup and wear her hair just so. She sang in bars, clubs, festivals & living rooms across the continent until landing in Hungary. After some time spent living the expatriate life, she returned to the States to pursue a career in music on her native soil. http://www.suchcoolstuff.net/2009/08/brandi-shearer.html
I have a post on the difference between gaining genuine consent and overcoming lack of consent which received revealing and hostile comments from men coming to my blog from the Men are Better Than Women forum. I wrote a summary of an all day meeting on primary prevention of sexual violence in Minnesota which has already led to 4 counties in MN adopting sexual violence prevention resolutions.
Here at After cancer, now what? I’ve been busy. First with Formula Tax deduction a story about a family who have been trying to receive reimbursement for baby formula, from their own FSA, because Mom is not able to breast feed. Followed by No credit for formula but pet food okay is about a bill in Congress to make pet expenses tax deductible.
I wrote about my confusion regarding the Michele Bachmann post last week: http://thisfieldisrequired.com/2009/08/21/state-control-of-abortion-funding-or-failing-to-provide/ And also about what is wrong with Cargo Timestrip lipgloss: http://thisfieldisrequired.com/2009/08/23/cargo-your-lip-gloss-insults-my-intelligence/
At Natalie Does New York, I wrote about the “number” and asked my readers some questions about what the “number” actually means.
Writing Violent, considering the uses of violence in my recent work Writing Violent 2: William Golding, a discussion of why I don’t really care for Lord of the Flies Privilege, Experiment, and (Non)sense, a reflection on the ways privilege can appear in experimental poetry Respecting Identity, a consideration of how normativity requires certain identities to be explained and others not to be explained and Abuser are Not Tragic Heroes, another fail from CNN.
After a short hiatus after moving, getting settled in the new place, and a bit of brief reflection, I wrote a short post about my feelings against feminism while still calling myself a proud feminist, and what that means when discussing sexism against men.
Another quick one I just spat out about the lack of diverse music that appeals to me and why it’s hard to do anything about it, http://piecesofstring.wordpress.com/2009/08/24/why-is-most-of-the-music-i-listen-to-writtenperformed-by-straight-white-males/
I’ve started an online feminist book club — sign up! Wrote about intersexuality after reading about the Caster Semenya case. I recently celebrated my 400th post woohoo.
Over at Pink Scare, we’ve got lots and lots about healthcare and how badly the Democrats are failing us, and lamenting the failure of the Obama administration to even listen to single-payer supporters when he claimed to be welcoming all voices. I write about one of my greatest pet peeves, the happy, “Have you lost weight?!” compliment. T wrote a great post that rejects the notion that feminism should be an open plurality of ideas.
Over at Macha Mexico I wrote about why part of being a responsible tourist means supporting progressive immigration reform, and suggest that supporting the DREAM Act and/or the Uniting American Families Act are great places to start.
I wrote about how I would really like for people to stop using the word “asexual” in a negative sense – e.g.in stereotypes about the sexuality of fat, disabled, old, etc. women – and how I as an asexual person find it marginalising.
This week I hesitantly wrote about Caster Semenya. It seemed that writing more about her was just one more person discussing her without her consent, but there were some things I wanted to say about how we discuss sex and gender. I also talked about Pitt refusing the bequest from the shooter, and wondered if maybe they should have taken it and given it to the Women’s Studies department as a final eff you. On a much lighter note, I also wondered if perhaps Always created the all-maxi pad swimsuit.
Head on over to askmelissa.com to check out a snarky take on a fairly ridiculous event in NYC called “Fashion Meets Finace”. This blog is one girls take on an event which attempted to bring together “men of finance” with “women of fashion”. Talk about setting women back a few notches.
