Another Mixmania

The disc (“DRIVE”) is sitting right in front of me, packaged and ready to go. Making these compilations is getting more and more difficult after I figured not everyone would enjoy the avant garde and punk rock.

The contents:

Portishead – All Mine
Tribe Called Quest – Like It Like That
Donovan – Get Thy Bearings
Belle and Sebastian – I Love My Car
Jens Lekman – Are Birthdays Happy?
Jon Brion – I Believe She’s Lying
Wolf Parade – You Are a Runner and I Am My Father’s Son
The Smiths – Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now
The Occasion – Dulcimer’s Fantasy
Lenny Smith – I Saw a Mighty Angel
Charlemagne – August Evenings
The Blue Van – A Revelation of Love
Jennifer Gentle – I Do Dream Of You
Butthole Surfers – Summer in the City (cover)
The Knitters – The New World
Eve Massacre – 3l3ctr1c Dr3ams (Human League cover)
Dungen – Festival
Nouvelle Vague – This Is Not a Love Song (Public Image Ltd. cover)
Erma Franklin – Piece of my Heart
Sons and Daughters – Taste the Last Girl
Pere Ubu – Humor Me

To be put in the mail in 5… 4… 3… 2…

  1. Who cares if they like it? It’s all about you putting together a mix you like. And as a bonus, your recipient just might getting exposed to music s/he didn’t know s/he liked.

  2. Portishead, Tribe Called Quest, Donovan, Belle and Sebastian?

I hope you have a good lawyer, because listening to that mix constitutes several violations of the Geneva Conventions.

  3. David, you shouldn’t have a look at my mp3 list. Of the thousands and thousands I have, I’m definitely breaking a treaty or four.

Like I said, the urge to go harder backfired on me when I sent a disc full of noise and cursing to a woman who gave it to her adult daughter — and even she wouldn’t listen to it. I run the gamut.

  4. Nouvelle Vague! I bought that album a couple weeks ago and have fallen in love with it. Well, anything released on David Byrne’s Luaka Bop label is pretty much guaranteed to be good listening, but who would’ve thought combining new-wave tunes with bossa nova would work so beautifully.

    Nice mix.

  5. Your last mix was was favorite of the bunch, by far. And I probably got a dozen different mixes.

Like Hank said, don’t worry about who listens (I never do!), just enjoy mixing it all together and live with the wicked pleasure that you’ve surprised and appalled.

You can’t sit out the next one… the theme will be “guilty pleasures”!

  6. Yeah, me too Lauren…and I’ll reciprocate. You know I’m good for it.

Wolf Parade is opening for The Arcade Fire tomorrow night here in Portland – I hope I like ’em.
