Shameless Self-Promotion Sunday

You know what to do.

  1. I’ve been writing about the radio “shock jock” team here who strapped a fourteen year old girl into a lie detector, with the collaboration of her mother, and questioned her about her sex life live on air. Whereupon she revealed that she’d been raped at age 12.

Kyle and Jackie O re-traumatise a child rape victim on air.

Followup: Kyle and Jackie O Show Suspended!

In other news, the president of the AMA (Australian Medical Association) argued that gay and single women shouldn’t be able to access repro tech because it’s a “lifestyle choice” and they’re going “against the natural order of things”; and our Health Minister is finally starting to rethink the impending blanket ban on homebirth midwifery.

  2. 6 months in and Obama is already prefacing comments like, “I’m pro-choice but…” regarding the health care plan. Here’s a strategy we might use to engage more politicians.

Outdated company policies or social practices can result in extinction. Following the adapt or die tradition, black women seek global appeal.

  3. This week at Adventures of a Young Feminist:

Pregnant Bodies in Away We Go: about the use and representation of pregnant women in the movie Away We Go.

What’s In a Name?: about my decision to keep my name upon marriage and what that means for relationships and my feminism.

Washed Over By a Wave: about the use of the term “third wave” in feminism.

Women in Home Security Commercials: about the use of vulnerable women to sell home security systems.

Finally, I started a new series called Breast Implications about the social, cultural, environmental, and medical implications of breasts.

  4. Elle of Austin Midcentury Modern runs an Etsy store as an online presence for her appointment-only brick and mortar vintage business, working chiefly with interior designers on the east coast. They have a constantly rotating selection of items, including some really interesting architectural and industrial pieces. Austin Modern was also recently asked to give a lecture on decorating with Mid Century and vintage pieces at Design Within Reach in conjunction with the Birth of the Cool exhibit at the Blanton Museum. http://www.suchcoolstuff.net/2009/08/austin-midcentury-modern.html

  5. A bit new to the blogosphere here–just started up this week. I’ll be writing at The Feminist Ojou-sama, mostly focusing on issues of sexism and homophobia in anime and the anime community.

Dakimakura, or Why we Otaku are Fucking Crazy – I examine the popularity of dakimakura–hug pillows–and the male-oriented nature of anime merchandising that often comes at the exclusion and alienation of female fans.

Dyking Up the Summer: A Round-Up of this Season’s Shoujo Ai Titles – The first of a three-part series discussing a few of the anime releases this summer that take on lesbian themes, and my problems with how lesbians are treated in mainstream television, both in Japan and in the West. For not the first time I ask, why can’t my sexuality have a serious representation in the media?

Is Anime Really Devoid of Good Feminist Role Models? – I talk about an article by Elizabeth Birmingham on the yaoi fan community, mostly its point that female fans tend to be more interested in male anime characters because of a distinct lack of well-written women. It’s hard to deny that so many female characters in anime are relegated to cheap fanservice devices and love interests for the hero–how does that affect female otaku?

  6. Nappy Hair in the Jolie-Pitt World: Looking at the way those who have internalized racism have attacked Zahara for her supposedly unkept hair. Yep, bad black hair strikes again.

Nadya Suleman Get Her Reality Television Show: Despite being shamed for having multiple children now that she has found a way to support them it is stilll unacceptable to some.

Obama Naked with unicorns NSFW: Images of Obama done by an artist in which I invite commenters to express their feeling upon seeing them. I for one have never seen Obama depicted this way.

Lesbian Kissing Will Destroy The WNBA: The WNBA is struggling to stay afloat and is therefore trying to cultivate a family based fan attendance rather than the lesbian spectators that it currently gets. The moment one begins to appeal to “the family”, suddenly the best interest of teh kiddies becomes an issue.

  9. Lots of really cancer related posts this week at After Cancer, now what? but two posts may be of interest.

The first is about <a href=" http://www.aftercancernowwhat.com/2009/07/looking-for-date-after-cancer.html" Dating after cancer

The other is a shopping perk but is only good through today Clothes for you, money for lymphoma . Through today there is a coupon for 30 percent off your purchase at Old Navy, Gap and Banana Republic with 5 percent going to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. With the economy where it is (at least for me) my charitable giving is less than I would like but I still need to buy back to school clothes for my kids. Sorry if this is off topic but I thought someone else might benefit.

Thanks for your fantastic blog, you help keep me grounded.

  10. I did not edit my previous comment properly. Here we go again:

Here are the posts of the previous week at Miss Incognegro which seemed to connect with my readers:

  12. Breaking News: Men don’t mind when women are treated like cattle – a post about male reactions to charts made for judging beauty contests (charts which strongly resemble 4H guides to judging animals).

Seriously, aren’t we over catcalling yet? – a post about threatening catcalls and the male privilege of not having to deal with them. How would men react if they were constantly shouted at by strangers who were heavier, taller, and stronger than they were?

Also, this is rather tangential, but for any MST3K fans out there, I have a post about meeting Pearl, who was the only woman on the show.

  13. This week in Evil Slutopia:

~Another post about the conservative group One Million Moms – this time we’re talking about their strategy for avoiding “inappropriate content” in summer movies.

~We talked about a recent criticism of Katy Perry’s song “I Kissed A Girl” and took a little look back at the controversy over the song and whether it is always criticized for the right reasons.

~We responded to a little drama that happened at the BlogHer conference that we just attended in Chicago, where a couple of women were denied entrance to a cocktail party because they had their babies with them.

~We talked about the recent tabloid gossip about Disney star Demi Lovato and accusations that she may be cutting herself.

~We covered the recent vandalism of “Legalize Gay” shirt displays at a couple of American Apparel stores.

  14. I posted this on an older thread about Joe, but the comment hasn’t been approved, I’m not a regular poster, so I don’t know if older threads are in effect closed, but I was wanting to mention that:

The ACLU filed a motion against Sheriff Joe on July 1st because he is still hassling female inmates who want abortions. He used to require them to get a court order, and when the courts ruled against him about that, he started making the inmate prepay for transportation and procedure costs. No other inmates are required to prepay, or reimburse the county in any way for medical procedures or even for inmates’ personal visits to sick/dying family members or to funerals.

There’s a whole bunch of links up there thru my user name. 🙂

  15. Marketing Masculinity: It’s amazing to how gender infects every part of our lives. I was reminded of this at work…

In Kenya, another list…another burden for women?: On the heels of the much talked about Waki List, another list has surfaced to the ire of increasingly cynical Kenyans…

Indian Supreme Court Rules Against Forced Abortion: The Indian Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of a young woman who became pregnant and didn’t want to get an abortion…

Global Feminism in the News, August Edition: The Women of Afghanistan: This month saw considerable news coverage for Afghanistan (including this post by fellow GAB author Maria). July was the deadliest month for American and British troops since…

In History: María Lionza from Venezuela: I came across a central figure of a Venezuela indigenous religion (a mix of African and Catholic religions– similar to Santería) called María Lionza, in a fictional book that I just finished that takes place in Venezuela…

Japanese Masculinity and Two-Dimensional Girlfriends: Recent online discussion of a New York Times article about men with “pillow girlfriends” has largely ignored the role of the construction of masculinity in the development of what the Japanese call moe. The men who turn…

Oppression, Masculine Power, Duality, and Kant: This post is strongly related to this post and its comments. I have decided to present the ideas in this post as a series, incorporating the ideas presented in reader comments as I go along…

Justice, Women, & the Indian Army: On July 25th, the Kharkan camp of the Border Security Force (BSF) molded its name in history by inducting its first batch of 178 female members, according to the Times of India…

Blowing the Whistle on Nicaragua: Amnesty International released an extensive report this week on the horrors of human rights abuses happening in Nicaragua. These abuses are on account of a law, almost unparalleled in its harshness…

  16. From Bitch Magazine’s blog this week…

Woman in Assam Stones Eve Teaser, in case you need a reason to smile today, find out how one tiny woman responded when harassed by a massive army jawan in Assam

Kicking Ass and Taking Names: An Actress Spotlight on Tura Satana, Tura Satana is an actress with a larger than life biography. She was born in Hokkaidō, Japan in 1935 to a silent movie actor and a contortionist

The New Era of Girl Sure Looks A Lot Like the Old Era of Kiddie Porn, Hudson Jeans calls 17 yo Georgia May Jagger the “new era of girl.” Does this era include condoning the commodification of a teenage girl’s sexuality? Cuz (unfortunately) that’s not exactly new. It is, however, disgusting and sleazy.

Stories for Girls: An Interview with Lizzie Skurnick, Page Turner chatted with Skurnick about how feminism bleeds through the pages of The Cat Ate My Gymsuit, why she’s actually the anti-nostalgia woman, how the YA novels really did make her a teenage feminist, and her mission to create a literary teen canon.

Meanderings on Miss Moral Beauty, For the judges of Miss Moral Beauty, beauty is something that is (and should be) located beyond a woman’s physicality, and instead of focusing on a woman’s body, they believe one should determine beauty by a person’s thoughts and actions. Pretty feminist-y… right?

  17. This week Feminist Review gets film-y

Boy Interrupted airs tonight on HBO. From a very early age, Evan was practically entranced by the idea of death and taking his own life. He was put on Prozac when he was five and spent a great deal of his young life in a psychologist’s office. Evan attempted suicide for the first time when he was in elementary school. When he was also fifteen years old, Evan committed suicide by jumping from his bedroom in New York City.

Girls Rock! follows a group of campers through the entire camp experience: the first day’s meet-and-greet; the drama surrounding choosing band-mates and names; and the fights, friendships, and indescribable bonds and breakthroughs that happen throughout the week. Viewers get to know specific campers through in depth footage of their home lives and candid interviews. They are simultaneously charming, annoying, demanding, and lovable, which is to say that they are real girls who are still growing into themselves.

Lumo: One Young Woman’s Struggle to Heal in a Nation Beset By War is a documentary, named after its central character, of an African woman healing from a rape endured by military men that left her with a medical condition called fistula, a tear in the wall between the vagina and bladder caused by violent rape. It left her incontinent and uncertain of her chances to birth children. Like so many women who bear the heaviest and agonizing brutality in war-torn countries, rape is the most barbaric and common war crime committed against African women. While others think of terror in the form of bombs, missiles, and heavy artillery, Lumo recognizes rape as the most treacherous act of war, which claims the lives of so many women and leaves them in unspeakable suffering.

  18. Whew! There was a lot of writing this week:

I tried to figure out just what level of hell the EA promo at comic con qualifies for.

Then I did a follow up on gay gamer, PixelPoet’s awesome “thanks, but no thanks” response when he was chosen as a runner up.

I also did a follow up on my co-bloggers response to Fugitvus’ post on responding to rape jokes, this time on how to confront catcallers and HollabackDC’s summit.

On my personal blog I ranted about the NYT’s style piece on The New Antiquarians that neglected any discussion about the style’s imperialist roots and did a comparison of A&F and American Apparel’s despicable practices.

    Hopefully the writing streak continues.

  19. I wrote a post this past week about how it’s a false dichotomy when people only talk about two types of sexuality: straight and gay, and how everyone else seems to be left out.

I have had one conservative response (to which I rebutted); however, I would absolutely LOVE to have more experienced responders and people of different sexual classifications to speak in my comments, so that it’s not just my hetero-white male perspective.
