Falwell speaks out for “basic” gay rights:

Falwell, who in the immediate aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001, blamed the terrorist attacks on “the pagans, the abortionists, and the feminists and the gays and lesbians,” and who describes himself as “very conservative,” told Carlson that if he were a lawyer, he too would argue for civil rights for gays.

“I may not agree with the lifestyle,” Falwell said. “But that has nothing to do with the civil rights of that… part of our constituency…

“Civil rights for all Americans, black, white, red, yellow, the rich, poor, young, old, gay, straight, et cetera, is not a liberal or conservative value,” Falwell went on to say. “It’s an American value that I would think that we pretty much all agree on.”

Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign, said his group welcomed the apparent softening of Falwell’s position on at least some gay rights. “Like most Americans, it seems Rev. Falwell has reached the conclusion that everyone deserves basic rights,” said Solmonese. “I hope he also supports legislation that would deliver on these values.”

  1. I can’t help thinking that someone Falwell listens to (if there is anyone) told him to pretend to be more tolerant for some reason. As unlikely as that sounds, I have a very hard time believing he’s truly becoming less rabid. Yes, some people can change, but Falwell? That’d be like Bush admitting a mistake…

On a related note, Falwell calling himself “very conservative” is a little like saying Hitler “had issues with the Jews”–it’s nuclear-powered understatement!

  2. What does this say about the gay community…what does this say about Falwell…. now that he can “support” gay people……. some people you just need to castrate.

  3. I think gay marriage is a side issue. I am not about to waste my time making sure comfortable white men are more comfortable;-) Hell, people are dying.

  4. I was watching some stupid bit on the “echo boomers” on 60 min tonight and not long after stating that the generation in question adheres to “traditional” values they went on to say that it is the most diverse generation ever and ask the focus group they compiled if they supported gay marraige. Every single kid raised their hand.

    Heh.
