Wonder Woman for DC

The New Organizing Institute is running some superheroes for DC mayor. As a feminist, I of course am throwing my support behind Wonder Woman. Check out her website, and follow her on Twitter.

The campaign isn’t entirely real (although you can and should vote on Friday!), but here’s a serious question for you all: What policy posititions should Wonder Woman take? What does feminist urban policy look like?

  1. Given the difficulties inherent in flying an invisible plane, I can only presume she would support fully unionized and trained air traffic controllers.

  2. Wonder Woman would obviously be the best choice, since she’s one of few superheroes (Black Lightning also comes to mind) that is/has been a politician, namely as the diplomat from Themyscira.
Wonder Woman is clearly in favour of many progressive policies and a society based on equality, whether class or gender. Since DC is just a city, her foreign policy wouldn’t be an issue, but though she is for peace, she is certainly no pacifist.

I personally enjoyed the Wonder Woman books written by Greg Rucka, and she’s currently being written by my comics crush Gail Simone.

  3. i’m for catwoman. i know, she’s technically a villain. but i think its useful for feminism to broaden its horizons to include the dark side, as i’ve been explaining in the sarah palin thread.

  4. Having just watched the WW animated movie (I’m recommending it, dammit, and the hell with the crappy stupid Persephone death line–I blame it on blood loss) I can think of a few things that would be important for Wonder Woman’s policy.

To prevent Cheetah outbreaks, animal control would become much more comprehensively funded.

All medical practitioners, especially those with the last name Psycho, Cyber, or Poison will be reviewed every five years to retain their licenses.

Religious institutions will now be fully taxed, both to continue to separate church and state and also to make it more difficult to attempt to revive Ares, or create a personality cult such as those centered around Kobra or Brother Blood.

All sports teams will be…genderly integrated? Sexily integrated? I don’t know what the word is, but women will be encouraged to “unleash hell” on the football field.

That’s all I have so far.

  5. DC home rule!!
If making DC Wonderful is her campaign slogan, I think that means not selling it to rapacious developers and taking it out of the slovenly control of Congress.

  6. RE: Ori

The city will look up and cry “save us”!
And I’ll look down and say “vote for firmer fiscal controls and smaller government”.
