I speculated on why some guys believe marriage is such a huge sacrifice for men – and for men only (I’m looking at you, Andrew Klavan!). And while I was on the topic of the poor menz’s marriage woes, I felt a twinge of sympathy for the devil Mark Sanford and wondered whether the peculiar arrogance of culture warriors might make them more prone to adultery.

This week in Evil Slutopia: ~We took on another conservative lie about the hate crimes bill. ~We’re still talking about our amazing trip to the International Women’s Writing Guild summer conference – we rounded up our ‘you had to be there!’ moments, and had a conversation with someone who had some…misguided notions about a book written by one of the awesome women from the Guild called Married Women Who Love Women. ~We took a screenwriting class and had some issues with the way the teacher interpreted the message of Juno. And speaking of teen pregnancy, we’re also still talking about the misguided conservative protests of The Secret Life of the American Teenager. ~And speaking of conservatives, we discussed Meghan McCain’s recent appearance on Bill Maher’s show, and the post-press conference Governor Sanford lovefest on MSNBC.

Long time reader, first time commenter. Today’s post is some of this week’s most interesting news according to me.
We wrote about Mark Sanford, the Supreme Court strip-search decision, and the NYT’s sexless review of Transformers.
I’ve continued my journey to be healthier, save money, live sustainably, and make my hair look awesome by washing my hair with two edible ingredients. Good-bye conventional shampoo and conditioner.
Only two days left to enter our Juneteenth giveaway. Stolen Bases: Why American Girls Don’t Play Baseball is as intelligent and powerful as any professional U.S. women’s baseball team would be, should be, and could be…if any were supported enough to exist. The book is a concise 180 pages, an assertive objection to the current status of baseball in the United States in its exclusion of women, and a worthwhile read for those who find themselves in the middle of the Venn diagram of athletes, spectators, and feminists. Tapologo is a full-length documentary shot in Northwest Province, South Africa. Directors Gabriella and Sally Gutierrez Dewar chronicle a handful of the 20,000 displaced African refugees in a squatter camp called Freedom Park. Here we are exposed to life and death in a place where fifty percent of the women are infected with HIV. Preeminent feminist Buddhism scholar Rita M. Gross’ A Garland of Feminist Reflections is an indispensable collection of her best collected writing from the past forty years. Drawing together theory, philosophy, and religious exploration, Gross’ self-selected anthology is deeply thought provoking and can serve as an introduction to her vital scholarship, or a necessary refresher on important concepts and ideas. How to Cook a Tapir is a fascinating memoir about Fry’s experiences living in a remote Kekchi village in the rainforest. Interspersed with recipes that Fry gleaned from the generous village women, the book tells a story of a twenty-year-old woman who can barely cook and her experiences as a young wife and teacher. Twenty-one reviews are published weekly at Feminist Review.
I wrote some posts about analogies between sexual and economic ideologies: hence the Sexuality of Fascism and the Sexuality of Liberalism In more exciting news – Landwhales! Robots! Burqas! And – has patriarchy been overthrown? And if so: what has replaced it?
Exploitation or Freedom of Choice?: Donna Dickenson Talks about Body Shopping: Converting Body Parts to Profit Intimate Oppression: An Interview with Danzy Senna, Senna’s parents, an interracial couple, married in 1968 with dreams of being a part of an idyllic, multicultural family. This book is a complex blend of remembrance, internal exploration, and detective work, as Senna travels throughout the South to uncover pieces of her father’s story she never knew as a child and young adult.
From Bitch blogs this week… Dubai is Hot, but Paris is Not!, How many cultural competency experts does it take to educate Paris Hilton? More than even she can afford! Douchebag Decree (Dis)Honorable Mention: Burger King just keeps on pissing me off, blow job ads are just (not) sexy Belated Father’s Day post, promoting feminist fatherhood A Different Kind of F-Word: Perez Hilton and GaySlurGate, is this really how we celebrate Stonewall? Money Meets Maternity: Cash for your Eggs, a new NY law gives way to mo’ money, mo’ problems An Artistic Path of Healing and Resistance, an online art exhibit on the way women and girls experience violence worldwide
I blogged about how hard it can be to recognize bullying… http://spectrumbeach.wordpress.com/2009/06/27/my-spidey-sense-was-tingling/
This week marked my return to regular blogging post-exams, post-LSAT, and post-engagement. To celebrate, I responded to my conservative Christian community’s disbelief that I could possibly be a feminist and get married in Men, feminism, and using my gifts.
For those interested in what’s going on in Iran and all those affected by the death of Neda Agha Soltani and many other Iranian protesters: I translated a poem in memory of the dead, and a letter by Mohsen Makhmalbaf (Iranian cinematographer and spokesperson for Mousavi’s campaign abroad) regarding mourning.
It’s all in the name – my take on the Guardian feature regarding taking the husband’s surname after marriage. Thanks!
Over at Happy Bodies, inspired, unfortunately, by the Real World/Road Rules challenge, I blogged about the biology of gender and how it contributes to victim-blaming and the normalization of male violence.
I wrote “Dear Tampa Tribune.” The newpaper used my entire blog post without permission or giving me a byline. It’s nice to know the media can lay off writers steal blogger content. I posted interviews with Caspian Makan and Arash Hejazi. They provide their eyewitness accounts of the shooting of Neda Agha-Soltan. This isn’t a blog post but Miss Feministe should enjoy it. The Jackson 5 performing an acapella version of I’ll Be There. My jaw dropped. This is amazing.
Pride in the (un)Divided City – general post about the necessity of Jerusalem Pride in Israel. Anecdotes Regarding: A Butch, A Clueless Teen and J-Lem Pride – as the title says. Your Kind are not Welcome Here – about the violence during and after Jerusalem Pride. And Beyond the headscarf and the blood on Neda’s face – a brief post about how the Western Media views the situation in Iran through the images of Iranian women.
It’s the weekend of the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion. I put up several pieces on Stonewall this weekend http://womenborntranssexual.com/2009/06/27/stonewall-1949-1969-the-back-story/ http://womenborntranssexual.com/2009/06/27/my-first-pride-parade/ http://womenborntranssexual.com/2009/06/28/greenwich-village-two-years-before-stonewall/ and finally: http://womenborntranssexual.com/2009/06/28/greenwich-village-two-years-before-stonewall/ They are separate reflections. I had transitioned shortly before Stonewall so I share the anniversary.
Man will get no jail time for child rape — One of the more infuriating stories that I blogged about this past week. An Aiken, S.C. man pled guilty to two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and one count of criminal solicitation of a minor. David Emory Paul admitted to raping and molesting one of the two 14 year old female victims and giving alcohol to both of the victims. He will not serve any time in jail due to his age — Mr. Paul is 74. Best Letters to the Editor — This is a series that I do from time to time. The best letters in the link are from the June 19 to June 26 editions of the Kansas City Star. Tell Congress to defeat Sen. Coburn’s proposal — Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, one of the most misogynistic Senators in the chamber, is proposing an “Office of Unborn Children’s Health”. This as the first stage of the markup process to overhaul health care commences. It is one of over 12 anti-choice amendments to the underlying health care bill that is being filed. All the more reason to flood the Congressional switchboard and tell your Representatives and Senators to defeat any and all anti-choice amendments to the health care bill.
Dear Ladies: stop attributing your shortcomings to your sex/gender. seriously, it’s making me mad. An “o filthy grandeur!” tattoo? yep. i’m seriously considering it. Fuzz Therapy (Guest Fuzz): something cute to look at. finally, Mourning the King of Pop: i’ve found discussion threads and the media inadequate to my own mourning of Michael Jackson.

Because of the lengthy topics and issues that arised int he comments section of last week’s post about gendered language, I wrote a folow-up post, where I expanded on some of the comments and questions that were raised.
I railed against a coworker who used his self-defined feminism to say incredibly unfeminist things, got mad at another article on a political/independent news site that focused on a woman politician’s hair, and a funny look at the real failure of the Transformers movie.
From Women’s Glib this week… On the ongoing and childish fight in the New York State Senate. Ann Coulter waxes poetic on the topic of Dr. Tiller’s murder.
Hello! The wrong way to spend your money about The Suze Orman Show and I don’t care about “melba toast,” Michael Bay. about the racism and sexism in Transformers 2 Enjoy!
Here are two from my blog, miss incognegro: “Game Over” re: the myth of a post-racial society: http://missincognegro.wordpress.com/2009/06/28/game-over/ “On Feminism, Apologies and Twitter.” http://missincognegro.wordpress.com/2009/06/27/why-did-i-apologize/
Sorry for the typos in the last post. I also wrote a post asking readers to share their experiences with their body hair, and how they perceive other people’s body hair, in terms of gender. This is intended to be a discussion post, where people share their experiences, and where we learn about other perspectives.

Two things this week were slightly trivial in the face of other news, but the things that I’m proudest to have written, and which I want to self-promote! Firstly, flagging up Mike Selvey’s falling in love with women’s cricket, in which he says the best wicketkeeper in any national team was the England Women’s ‘keeper, Sarah Taylor. If there are any sci-fi, physics or philosophy geeks and nerds out there, please have a look at my tearing paper time travel thought-experiment, and let me know what answers (if any) you come up with! On a slightly more serious note, but probably several years behind everyone else, I looked at the way sexual morality is defined in The Sims 2, in Sex and the Slutty Sim – basically, gay marriage is legal for sims but poly is unthinkable.

I posted a women’s magazine article I wrote about sexual assault and professional football. I wrote about why it’s so damned difficult to get a job in the creative industries and what you can do about it. Drawing upon my thesis work, I argued that dating and hooking up aren’t so different after all. And looked at how social media is changing our friends and emotional intimacy.

Shared Experiences in Educating Kids — and Adults — About Sexuality: This week we featured tales about the pleasure of fancy undies, showing off one’s chest to a friend, a father’s lesson about the efficacy of condoms and a toddler’s confusion over peanuts.
I wrote about when queers put other queers in gender boxes. I also wrote about the goddamn rain that has been plaguing NYC until this weekend.

A copy of a letter I wrote to the Pres. relating what opposition remains to “gummint run health care” to the poor service provided from many government run agencies. It is in general interesting how the needs of children are ignored: if you require children to be present, e.g., in turning in their passport applications, perhaps you should not have local passport facilities only open during school hours and should have some degree of accommodation for said kids (at least making sure the line, um, moves)?
I started my new blog! I’m writing about sex, sex work, and feminism. This Jezebel article about prostitution rubbed me the wrong way.
I’m hoping that people will take our poll, so imnotme can get this future blog out of his system. I’m very curious to read it.
