In defense of the sanctimonious women's studies set || First feminist blog on the internet

After reading this article, castration indeed has begun to look appealing.

I’ve been meaning to write about Guy Cimbalo’s “Ten Conservative Women I’d Like to Hate-F*ck” piece in Playboy, but the magazine pulled the online version, so I haven’t actually been able to read it. Jezebel has it pretty much covered, though. The general complaint about the conservative women listed is that they have the nerve to be both beautiful, opinionated and female — and so instead of simply arguing that they’re wrong, Cimbalo splashes his rape fantasies across the pages of a men’s magazine.

Many of us would like to think that liberal dudes are somehow more enlightened than conservative ones when it comes to gender issues, and that lefty guys are more receptive to outspoken, bold women. Many of them are. But for a dude like Cimbalo, all it really takes is an outspoken, bold women with whom he disagrees to let loose the most vile sexual insults.

What liberal dudes (and some liberal women) fail to realize is that when we attack right-women using sexualized insults, we help to build and maintain a system by which all women are open to those kinds of attacks, and where it’s socially acceptable to target a woman for her gender and her sexuality rather than her opinions or her character. Just because conservatives wrote the book on this one doesn’t mean it’s ok to turn it around on them — although of course it is irritating to see the same people who hurl sexist insults at women like Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton and Sonia Sotomayor get all up in arms* at the fact that the National Organization for Women didn’t respond to a minor Playboy article that was online for 24 hours before being pulled. This may be shocking, but a huge organization like NOW may have been otherwise occupied with the news of an abortion provider being gunned down (and the killer threatening more violence) and a pending Supreme Court nomination. Certainly the Playboy article is offensive and worth calling out, but I can see why it didn’t make the #1 spot on NOW’s agenda.

All of that said, though, the article is of course horrific. I’m glad Playboy pulled it, but I’m disgusted that they actually thought it acceptable to run in the first place. And I suppose it is kind of nice to see conservatives waking up and realizing that sexism does exist — even if they’re still happy to hurl it at liberal women. My only remaining question is, when is Ann Althouse going to come around and say they should be flattered?

  1. Speaking as a transwoman, I can say that castration is indeed a healthy thing to exist and should be applied more often in our society. Unfortunately my opinion is sort of bias 😛

  2. I didn’t or wouldn’t really want to read that article but I wonder if hate f*cking and rape are two different things. As distasteful as the article sounds, it seems that the “hate f*ck” phenomenon is where a latent sexual attraction exists between two people who otherwise detest one another. Rape is a violent act of domination and shame against an unwilling partner.

Writing about it as a fantasy, however, includes your “Top 10” as unwilling accomplices, though, so it does cross the already grey line between the two.

Poor bastard. He has no idea how perverted his ideas are.

  3. I can’t seem to find the article in any of the caches, but now that I think about it, I don’t really need to read the damn thing. Cimbalo is obviously full of misogyny, and it’s not a huge surprise (and yet somehow I’m still disappointed) that Playboy would publish such an article. I’m glad this guy got called out on his bs, and I hope that other men who identify as liberal also continue to call him out, and to call out sexual violence as never appropriate (it’s odd to have to even write that phrase).

Along those lines, being careful to note that criticism of Cimbalo is completely, utterly warranted, as well as noting that he’s set himself up for lots of anger toward him, I’m not thrilled with (joking) calls for castration–which, after all, is just another kind of violence, and is also never appropriate, in my opinion. A small point, but I felt like keeping silent about it would not be the right thing to do…hopefully it’s not coming off as “…but what about the men?”

  4. …no. Conservatives wrote the book on using sexualized and sexist insults to take down politically powerful women.

  5. Any guy who uses the phrase “hate fuck” shows himself to be an uber douche–one who should go nowhere near anyone’s vagina, ever.

Seriously. Whether it’s “really” rape or not, it’s a creepy phrase. I remember a band of law-school trolls were talking about wanting to hate fuck Jill, and no one had a problem with seeing the utter creepiness.

But I’m not at all surprised to see drek like this from the likes of Playboy.

  6. Castration? I realize title of the piece is meant more as a satire but could you imagine the outcry if a man wrote an article about female genital mutilation? This I why mainstream America thinks feminists are man haters. Eventually the vast majority of women are going to say enough is enough.

  7. Castration? Damn, you guys need to get a grip. This is why the VAST majority of men and women believe feminists are man haters. On the top of the list are Women Studies majors, I’ve dealt with these hyper sensitive women on more then one occasion during my undergraduate tenor. These women are nasty, arrogant, rude, and complainers. They live in a perpetual world of victimization. Its quite sad

  8. Great call out. I too used to labor under the theory that liberal dudes were much more evolved regarding sexism. Basically, law school (and nice liberal profs who’d barter grades for sex) gave me some skepticism about that, and working at a liberal-dude-led law firm pretty much sealed the deal. They were no worse than conservative dudes, but so sure that they were on the side of the good guys that they felt they could get away with more blatant misogyny.

Re: “Conservatives wrote the book on using sexualized and sexist insults to take down politically powerful women.” That seems like a bit of a broad brush to me. Anita Hill, Christie Todd Whitman, Olympia Snowe are conservatives who are strong on women’s rights.

  9. I’m sorry, I have to disagree here, wholeheartedly and conservative women can go to hell. they are making fools out of everyone here by equating hatefucking with rape.

A.) Despite the ugly nomenclature, hatefucking is not rape, at least not when I’ve joked about it with my mates and I underscore the word “joked”. The playboy article was a total joke and everyone gasping about it is a pearl-clutching wanker!

I’m a bi female and am pretty open in general about such things in my circle. Sex is sex is sex and we love it, so hate, grudge, whatever negative fucking we go on about for a laugh is pretty common.

When I say I want to hate fuck a lad or another woman, it means he/she is so hot that I would fuck them even though I can’t stand their sorry ass or they can’t stand mine and, of course, it would be less than tender sex and, ofcourseofcourse, there is no “call ya later”. BUT, it is totally understood that it is consensual. There is no RAPE, that defeats the concept of a hate fuck, which is to channel the hate it into a good and primal cathartic lay defeating your reviled lover’s wankery. And, yes it is always a joke to make fun about some asshole/bitch we meet at a club or party, not a real fantasy like I want to have sex on the beach in broad daylight.

B.) Are we seriously wasting time here calling Playboy misogynistic!??! Of course it is! Jesus have you ever seen the cartoons in porn mags, gimme a break! Are we going to start on a crusade to point out the obvz and calling out XXX films vile and sexist now too?

    Bloody hell!

  10. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=hate+fuck

See, as usual conservative wankers have no street sense whatsoever.

Ladies, let’s get over ourselves, shall we! Jill, I love you love you love you, you are a wonder mate, but how is fantasizing about castrating my adversary any different than him wanting a good hatefuck because I ran him through at the club in front of his mates.

  11. Shiny Mae nailed it: It’s an outright lie to say that Guy Cimbalo “splashes his rape fantasies across the pages of a men’s magazine”. Last time I checked, rape was forced intercourse and “rape fantasies” were a desire to rape someone. The desire for a good hard shag with someone you otherwise couldn’t stand to be with has nothing to do with rape. I can’t wait for the next pseudo-feminist panic about how the phrase “I’d hit it!” encourages wife-beating.

For all the whining about the Playboy article (People read the articles in Playboy?), I’d point out that while the term “hate-fuck” is boorish and crude, falsely accusing someone of promoting rape fantasies is a million times worse. So while Playboy pulled the article, how many “feminists” who have slandered Cimbalo are going to remove their comments from their web pages? Or at least apologize for lying about him?

  12. I have no problem with the OP saying Cimbalo “splashes his rape fantasies across the pages of a men’s magazine”. Per dictionary.com, rape is “the unlawful compelling of a woman through physical force or duress to have sexual intercourse.”

Are Shiny and Newbomb claiming these women would have willingly been hate-f*cked by Cimbalo? If not, then what he’s talking about is a rape fantasy.

  13. Jill, is it too late for Cabaret Voltaire, Shiny Mae, and Newbomb Turk to be entered in teh FNTT competition?

  14. FashionablyEvil, I seriously considered it. But they were so entertaining that I felt the need to let them through immediately. Maybe I’ll enter them anyway…

  15. I certanly don’t share Newbomb’s negativity toward others here and I certainly wouldn’t call anyone a liar, I was just passing on my own perspective, for better or worse. All in good fun.

Yes, it is absolutely necessary that anyone being hatefucked is willing. Place tongue firmly in cheek before uttering. Of course it is nonsense. It is an absurd comedic scenario in which two equally bitter enemies ignore the discord between them and channel that aggression into a solid aggro shag (shaggro?) with no strings attached.

My first thought in reading Cimbalo’s list was that it was a rather juvenille (and much less artful) rip off of the lovely Rude Pundit, who regularly tears conservative women apart with his shaggro missives. If the Internet can handle Rude Pundit, why can’t it handle Playboy’s watered down Cimbalo version? Does Playboy’s higher profile or “legacy” somehow make it more of a role model than RP?

  16. Jesus, how stale are hate fuck jokes about women politicians? They serve the important double purpose of letting everyone know that (1) the author’s sex drive is so prodigious that he has no control over it; and (2) women only hold positions of power because men like the author consider them fuckable. This dude should have just tattooed “INSECURE” on his forehead and been done with it.

  17. Are Shiny and Newbomb claiming these women would have willingly been hate-f*cked by Cimbalo? If not, then what he’s talking about is a rape fantasy.

    Who knows? Maybe they would.

Not that it matters: I think Nigella Lawson is incredibly sexy and I would gladly jump her bones in the highly unlikely event that I ever had the chance to do so. This has nothing to do with rape, it has to do with a person who is hot enough to give me a raging woody in spite of her political views -which I find appalling.

Believe it or not, a number of people not only boink people they vehemently disagree with on politics: they marry them. I guess that equals rape too, right?

  18. NT, it is not lost on me that people occasionally fool around with folks who don’t share their political beliefs. While I would never sleep with an anti-choice guy, no matter how hot, I have slept with the occasional fiscal lefty.

The distinction, however, is that between a (1) a consensual interaction or (2) a private fantasy; and (3) a publicized, invasive account of something that has not been consented to.

  19. It’s sadly naive to say “what liberal dudes fail to realize is…”. Of course a guy like Cimbalo realizes this. That’s just how he likes things, and he wants to keep them that way.

  20. First, all of you who are defending this hate-fuck statement would be UP IN ARMS if it were a liberal woman being referenced. 2. Castration? So, genital mutilation is a good thing? I understand you were (I hope) being satirical… but, again, if a man were being ‘satirical’ about forced genital mutilation on a woman, I expect I would see hundreds of outraged comments here.

Overall, this is what I mostly expected. regardless of your ideology, those who mostly agree are given a pass and those who don’t aren’t.

I am wondering if I will see a post getting after Letterman for joking about the rape of a 14-year old girl. But, since it is Sarah Palin’s daughter, I expect not. It seems the women who think like you are protected and the rest, well F them.

I haven’t looked back far enough, but what about Miss California? Were you outraged that she may lose her crown (and now has) and was called a bitch simply for her opinion? Again, it is OK to slam her, call her a bitch, intimate that she is some kind of wanton slut since she doesn’t agree with a particular agenda.. the right and the left do this… and the rest of us white trash hillbilly anti-gay super bible beaters in Middle America never hear your message. Which is sad, cuz there is some good stuff in your messages, once the shit is filtered.

  21. Re: Castration — I didn’t make that joke up. It’s a quote pulled DIRECTLY from the article. Only difference is that I emphaized the “has.”

  22. Dear gradstudent:

How about you read the comments from actual feminists on this thread–including the OP–who condemned the hate-fuck comment. As well as the posts in this blog condemning the sexist attacks against Ann Coulter, Sarah Palin, as well as the sexist and racist attacks against Michelle Malkin. You see, we can and do condemn sexism even when it is aimed at women whose views are vile. Reading is fundamental, my dear.

I’m so glad you are very cognizant of sexism. I await your condemnations of Citizens United Not Timid, John McCain for calling his wife a c**t, and the right’s awful rhetoric about lefty women, and women in general. Until then, STFU and stop being such a hypocritical douche.

Newcomb, if you read the article or the post the OP linked to you’d see that the guy’s “criticisms” of the women were incredibly sexist in nature. Or maybe you wouldn’t, since likening hate fuck to spreading rape fantasies is–what?–“a million times worse” than writing misogynistic drivel. Whine, whine, whine. Poor baby, how do you oppressed men get through the day? It’s just like Russia under Stalin, I tell ya. (There, I said it and saved you wankers the trouble.)

And yes, hate fuck is a really creepy term. Sorry, Shiny, if that makes me a pearl-clutching wanker, than so be it, but unlike you, I don’t regard sex as something to use to put over on someone, or a way to “[defeat my] reviled lover’s wankery”. If you buy into the “I fuck you therefore you lose” school of thought, you fail at sex and at life. I’ve actually had sex with men I didn’t agree with but there was no hate in it on my part or on theirs–if I find someone that vile, I don’t want to nail them. Oddly enough, I don’t see male conservatives–or men in general–subjected to the same rhetoric WRT hate fucking, and they aren’t trashed for their looks, being outspoken, or being shrill.

But you know, Shiny, if it’s so unimportant, you are most welcome to turn your attention to things that you DO find important. IOW, stop your own damn pearl-clutching about the important shit and the naughty feminists, and occupy yourself doing something useful.

  23. I feel kinda dumb that I hadn’t read Jezebel’s whole take on it or all of the quotes, and didn’t recognize that the castration thing was from the original article. Apologies.

  24. No worries, Jeff. I agree that jokes about violence are usually inappropriate, and should have made it clear earlier in the thread that I was quoting the author sarcastically, not actually suggesting I think it’s funny to joke about castration.

  25. Thank you for calling this pig of a writer out, Jill, but this statement is ridiculous:

“Just because conservatives wrote the book on this one …”

Why do we have to make this a partisan issue? What should concern you is that things haven’t changed all that much — an attractive, opinionated woman is a threat unless she toes the line. Lefty men are just as culpable for writing the book on this one, but until now managed to hide themselves under the cloak of progressiveness — and, to our detriment, women keep falling for it. Look at all the women who swooned and fawned over Clinton, a man who, by all accounts, is a licentious dirtbag, cheater, and quite possibly a rapist. You do no one any favors by trying to foist the responsibility for this off on the right. Progressives need to acknowledge and purge these scumbags from their ranks if anyone is to believe that the status of women has any meaning to them whatsoever.
