Friday Random Ten – The “To Hell in a Handbasket” Edition

If it’s Friday somewhere it’s time for the Friday Random Ten.

If you don’t know what to do by now I’ll fill you in on the festivities. You have these excellent music files on your computer called mp3s. You select all of them, every one, and load them into your mp3 player. Winamp, iPod, whatever, just leave the Windows Media Player out of it. Set the player to random and let it go. List the first ten songs that play and put them into a list. If you’re feeling some writer’s block, feel free to annotate your list. It will take up space on your blog.

Now let’s go!

1) At the Drive-In – One-Armed Scissor
2) Princess Superstar – Fuck the Phone
3) Little Milton – Grits Ain’t Groceries
4) Nellie McKay – Toto Dies
5) Jeff Buckley – Corpus Christi Carol
6) Velvet Underground – Venus in Furs
7) Iron and Wine – Jezebel
8) Swamp Dogg – Total Destruction Of Your Mind
9) Mount Sims – Delicious & Nutritious
10) Slayer – Seasons in the Abyss

Well, this one is just bizarre.

Bonus Track: The freshly downloaded Hard-Fi “Cash Machine,” like The Clash reincarnated.

  1. Well, I’d have to actually *have* an mp3 player first. In lieu of such High Churchery, I will suffice with the last ten songs in the dastardly Windows Media Player.

What the Hell Have I- Alice in Chains
    Home- Staind
We’re in This Together- Nine Inch Nails
    Detachable Penis- King Missile
    Butterfly- Screaming Trees
    Parabola- Tool
    Overfloater- Soundgarden
    Never the Machine Forever- Soundgarden
    Would- Alice in Chains
    Girlfriend- Matthew Sweet

  3. Okay, I admit it. I don’t always have every last MP3 loaded into my Now Playing. My player doesn’t have the handy “Load all tracks” feature, so the easiest way is to go through the Genre listing and load each one. It’s a pain. But today I did it. Every last track is loaded, including the classical, the Christmas, the new age, the sounds of nature and the sounds of the stars. Let’s see what happens.

Thin Line Between Love and Hate – The Pretenders – Learning to Crawl (played this vinyl LOUD)

You Can’t Look Away – Sloth – Lara Croft: Tomb Raider film soundtrack

The Doctor Is In – You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown 1999 Broadway revival cast recording

Run-Around – Blues Traveller – The Truth About Cats and Dogs film soundtrack

Six – Natural Wonders – Ocean: Soothing Sounds…

  5. Unduly heavy onthe classic rock.

    9) Red Hot Chili Peppers: Mellowship Slinky In B Minor
    10) Rage Against the Machine: Year of the Boomerang

Non-random bonus track — Buddy Holly: Not Fade Away

  6. Not to worry, David. I don’t even have mp3s, much less a player. So I use Yahoo! Launchcast Radio. Quite random when I’m not using an alternative ID, but it’s not guaranteed that I know all the songs.

Now for my mostly metal edition of Friday Random Ten™. I did use an alternative ID which was more or less certain to give me a truckload of metal of all forms, because I felt like being loud today. Here goes:

    Artist — “Song”

Rob Zombie — “Living Dead Girl”
God Dethroned — “Slaughtering the Faithful”
    Krisiun — “Perpetuation”
Trivium — “Drowned & Torn Asunder”
Light This City — “Your Devoted Victim”
Mastodon — “Where Strides the Behemoth”
    Scar Culture — “Dead Alone”
Mos Def — “Got” (hmm…this one doesn’t quite seem to fit in…)
The Cult — “Edie (Ciao Baby)”
Opeth — “By the Pain I See in Others”

Slightly less random bonus track, throwing back to my early experiences with metal:
    Coal Chamber — “My Mercy”

Police in New York are conducting random bag searches in the subway; the London constables shot and killed a knapsack-wearing man who was probably trying to pull off another attack. Oh, and Larry Brown left the Pistons. In the midst of this panic, it’s time for your weekly eye of the storm, the Friday Random Ten, as seen at Feministe (go there for instructions and other editions of the FRT).
