Malkin (hearts) Discrimination

Michelle Malkin, esteemed author of “In Defense of Internment,” invites us to “Meet America’s Friend“: A pizza owner who refused to serve Germans or Frenchmen. Since when, I have to ask, is patriotism or supporting America about discriminating against others, who as individuals have done nothing anti-American? I wonder what Malkin’s reaction would be if liberal-owned restaurants here decided to refuse to serve white American males, since as a group they are most likely to have voted for George Bush.

Perhaps this Malkin post gets under my skin because of the long history of racism in America, which was tinged with stories just like this — restaurant owners refusing to serve people because of their membership in a particular group. But I don’t understand why this story has mobilized conservatives to try and raise money to support this discriminatory establishment. Aren’t there better causes out there?

  1. In Denmark “Pizza Aage” is kind of a joke. Malkin says he was forced to close after vandalism, and it is true that there were three times his windows got smashed in stupid acts of vandalism.

But the reported drop in sales can come as no surprise. firstly he has excluded a large part of his core customer group – German tourists are abundant in Denmark, secondly – why should danes choose to go to his shop? Its not like we have a shortage of pizza parlours, and why go to a place that discriminates?

If Michelle Malkin is a believer in the free market she must surely applaud the result af the free market – the customers “voted” with their feet.

And last – since he was still breaking the law – the local police was considering pulling his license to run a restaurant, so it is not like he had much choice in the matter.

  2. I wonder if Malkin is honest enough to call for the repeal of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. That way, restaurants can refuse to serve whomever they want!

Which, means, as a previous poster alluded to, restaurants can refuse to serve her.

  3. Interesting post and comments on this at Wizbang.

But then, Malkin always comes up with stories of this nature when the Republicans are having a bad time. We can call this the “Rove Distraction Move”.

Oh, did I mention the R word?

“Karl Rove deliberately leaked information about an undercover CIA operative, and then lied about doing so.”

    translates to

“There’s a man in Denmark who is going to go to jail for discrimination and he supports Bush! We must help him.

(Oh and by the way Powerline has the _real_ story on Rove, but back to that man with the pizza…)

  4. Jill- this post gets under your skin because you’re a caring, intelligent human being. Malkin is someone whose basic humanity is under suspicion. All of her “well-researched” thoughts and opinions would be laughable if they weren’t so dangerous.

  5. Sorry to be off-topic, but Jill, you missed a great episode of Law & Order tonight. Here’s the capsule:

DENNIS FARINA JOINS CAST AS SLICK DETECTIVE WHEN POLICE PROBE SLAYING OF GULF WAR VETERAN; NEW YORK MAYOR MICHAEL BLOOMBERG GUEST-STARS — Dennis Farina (“Get Shorty”) joins the cast as Detective Joe Fontana, a stylish veteran uneasily paired with Detective Green (Jesse L. Martin) when a former female Guardsman from the second Gulf War is found murdered — and evidence points to the vengeful Iraqi sister of a an ex-inmate at infamous Abu Ghraib prison. However, when D.A.s McCoy (Sam Waterston) and Southerlyn (Elisabeth Rohm) begin to prosecute, they discover that the suspect’s lawyer boldly plans to defend his client as an “enemy soldier” — subject only to the terms of the Geneva Convention. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg guest-stars as himself.

  6. I suppose the people who liked this story of the pizza shop owner who refused to serve Germans and Frenchmen were the same people who applauded the renaming of french fries to “freedom fries”?

  7. Steven –

I watched that too, and really enjoyed it, but then I am a L&O junkie (why, oh why, did they have to cancel ‘Trial By Jury’ and yet keep ‘Criminal Intent’?! *Sob*).

The interesting thing was that given Serena Southerlyn’s last 10 second revelation on her last episode (she’s gay, woohoo!! Us lesbian fans just about choked on our dinners that evening), it is SO interesting to go back now with the season’s reruns and see the even increasing schism between her and Branch (make’s McCoy’s supposed 60’s liberal radicalism seem rather limp and fizzing I have to say). I mean, in last night’s episode Branch effectively drew a line in his office and placed Serena on the other side of it. Not that she minded being placed on the other side of that line I felt, but she was seriously taken aback by his excessively insulting manner.

But I am getting WAY OT here … personally I ignore Malkin; she’s a freak that can turn a good piece of phrase … but I kinda see her work as soda; tastes nice initially, but when you look closely you see there really isn’t anything in it, and if you keep taking it in it does some seriously awfully corroding to your insides.

But, can someone give Serena my number? (and not tell my gf … oh, hi sweetie … err …)
