Really?
Nickelodeon is standing by troubled singer Chris Brown, who has been charged with two felonies in the alleged beating of girlfriend Rihanna.
In a statement to Usmagazine.com, the network said Brown, 19, will remain a Kids’ Choice Award nominee for favorite male singer and favorite song for “Kiss Kiss.” (He will be competing against Rihanna in the latter category.)
An online petition asking Nickelodeon to remove Brown and Rihanna as nominees had 2,166 signatures Tuesday.
But a network rep tells Us: “Like all our KCA nominees, Chris Brown was nominated by kids several months ago based on his work as a performer, and the kids who vote will ultimately decide who wins in the category.”
The same day Brown was charged with two felonies, he apparently posted a MySpace blog asking fans to vote for him in the Kids’ Choice content.
I understand that Nickelodeon wants to give kids the power to choose who they want to receive honors. But keeping Chris Brown in the running seems… problematic. It sends the message that abuse is acceptable, or at least something “private” that shouldn’t impact your career. Michael Phelps was dropped from advertising and endorsement deals for smoking pot; Michael Vick was (rightly) pilloried for abusing dogs. Shouldn’t physically abusing your partner garner slightly worse social and professional ostracism? Award shows — especially award shows aimed at kids — should not be honoring abusers.
