Controversy, photoshopped.

Administration in Beatrice hats

Who could have guessed that some photoshop genius would combine the second and third most controversial Feministe posts of the week into one handy visual? Thank you, internet, you win again.

Lolz.

Knut as a baby

Too much serious today? Check these out.

The Washington Post inadvertently publishes my online dating profile with the editor’s notes still included. Thanks for the link, Rebe!

I like big butts and I cannot lie, but is there some evolutionary reason as to why?

First page of my book: What do you think? (Amazing for DFW fans out there) (sorry to ruin the joke).

Zoopreme Court you are so cute. (via the Hairpin).

Steven Colbert you are so cute. (Also if you are not following his Sen. Kyle tweets you are missing out).

Oh man, I am going to put a serious damper on things now, but my favorite zoo animal OF ALL TIME has passed on. Currently, I am in a state of shock and denial. He was only four years old! How could this have happened?! I need to go now, but look at this little guy OMG he was so cute 🙁 🙁 🙁

Love Stories

I’m in a slightly soppy mood, and that is a mood in which I want to hear your love stories. I was thinking stories of romantic loves you’ve had, readers, but also love for family and friends and pets/companion animals: who and whatever you love! Leave them in comments.

New Time Suck

Pinterest. Basically, it’s an electronic pin-board, where you can save images that you like and share them with others. You can also search images for themes you like. I’m using it to consolidate apartment-decorating ideas — like the picture above of magnolias printed on the page of a dictionary, which I recently purchased from Etsy. But it’s generally a nice place to peruse pretty things. Enjoy!

Collective Geography: The Most Magical Place I Know

Last year, Ariel guest blogged at Feministe and changed the way I think about maps, geography, the internet, community, and how they interact in a collective space. One of my favorite collective geography projects she facilitated here was called “From Strength to Strength,” a collective remembering of places where we felt strong and did brave things. It was rather profound, I thought, and many of your stories moved me to tears.

I want to revisit Ariel’s project, this time with a new theme: What is the most magical place you know? What makes it so? How does it inspire you?

View The Most Magical Place I Know in a larger map

How do you participate? In Ariel’s words, with my email address:

1) You need to be logged into a Google account — any Google account — to edit the map. If you are worried about anonymity and do not have a throwaway Google account, please email me: fauxDELETETHISPARTrealtho at gmail dot com(munism).

2) Click on the map pictured above. Note that it does encompass the whole world. I can’t figure out how to get it to zoom out to the whole world without breaking the embed code; PLEASE do not let Google Maps’ US-centrism make our map similarly US-centric.

3) Click that little “Edit” button.

4) Some tools will pop up in the map window. Select the blue marker, and drag it to where you want to leave a point. Tell the story in the window! Tell us about it! What happened?

5) If you want to give it a funny or custom marker, click on the picture of the marker in the box where you add text, and it will give you the option to choose amongst Google’s options or even to upload your own.

Please feel free to play and edit. I will be checking the map over the weekend, so please comment or email if you have issues adding your contributions. I can’t wait to read your stories.

Following up on the Sydney feminist blogger meet-up

Some folks who couldn’t make it requested that the picnic be blogged, so here we are!

We had loads of fun with much conversation (oh, you wish you were there for the discussion of Middle English slash, I know how you do) and laughter and food. I was particularly taken with the boob cupcakes made by the news with nipples, which were both hilarious and delicious. I was kind of amazed that we had so many people come who live outside Sydney: Bridget came especially from Bathurst and we were fortunate enough to have timed it so that folks from Canberra, New Zealand and the United States could be there, too!

It was a beautiful sunny day and it was fabulous to put some faces to names as well as to catch up with some people I hadn’t seen in a while. Thank you so, so much to those who came, it was a real pleasure to see you all. Hopefully we can do this again sometime.

Just a lost property notice: a black bag was left behind. If it’s yours and you would like it returned, email me at chally [dot] zeroatthebone [at] gmail [dot] com and I shall put you in touch with she who has it.
