Shameless Self-Promotion Sunday January 11, 2009 Jill Give us whatcha got. Include a description of something you’ve written this week, along with a link. Don’t just link to your whole blog — make it specific.
Even the sanctimonious women’s studies set enjoys a guilty pleasure. Read about Sam and Lindsay’s breakup, a dismal new movie Bride Wars, the co-created saga of Brad, Jen and Angelina, and the joke that is Ann Coulter. As always, thank you for the opportunity to shamelessly self-promote. Carly D. Kickslaw
I’ve had a busy week writing about the birth of the “Breast Cancer Free Baby” and the surrounding controversy http://aftercancernowwhat.blogspot.com/2009/01/breast-cancer-free-baby-is-born.html Oral Sex and Cancer http://aftercancernowwhat.blogspot.com/2008/12/read-article-and-blog.html My concerns about the economy and layoffs http://aftercancernowwhat.blogspot.com/2009/01/do-layoffs-cause-cancer.html And on a more upbeat note a proposal to allow adults up to age 29 remain on their parents health insurance http://aftercancernowwhat.blogspot.com/2009/01/stay-on-your-parents-insurance-until.html There are some other posts, including one about the conversion to digital TV (we’ve already done it here). Hope everyone has a great week.
Stunning ignarance in Michigan, two posts about how the Mormon fundies in Bountiful have finally been charged, and a post about a rape victim in Afghanistan who had an unsafe abortion.
I just wrote a post about my problem with pronouns. I also have a new YALSA post on whether recent studies actually tell us anything about teens, technology & high-risk behaviors.
I noticed that sometimes the models on the Lane Bryant website look over-shopped and wonder why in Fat girl chic… and shame?.
in my blog, I wrote about how going home is just like stepping into a bad 1950s movie, complete with gender stereotypes, sexual harassment, and general asshole behavior. my favorites!
Speaking of guilty pleasures, we talked about the return of our love for Vh1 celebreality shows. I shared my weird funny Joe Biden dream. We talked about the AirTran incident. The American Family Association recently announced a boycott of PepsiCo products because of Pepsi’s support for the LGBT community, so we talked about the fact that the right wing is going to starve if they keep adding restaurants and food companies to their boycott lists.
At The Feminist Underground, we wrote about Maddow impersonations, Elena Kagan (Obama’s pick for his new Solicitor General), and a sickening Salon relationship memoir. We’re also debating what should make the 2008 Reading List.
I wrote about the Bush administration’s torture policies today. Glenn Reynolds claims Barack Obama is backtracking on Gitmo. Obama’s statement prove otherwise. But Obama said unequivocally that it will close. “I don’t want to be ambiguous about this. We are going to close Guantanamo and we are going to make sure that the procedures we set up are ones that abide by our Constitution. That is not only the right thing to do but it actually has to be part of our broader national security strategy because we will send a message to the world that we are serious about our values.” Reynolds does work for the same media service as Joe the Plumber. So this is to be expected. Dick Cheney claims he wasn’t in the chain of command that approved waterboarding. Cheney fails to explain why his chief of staff David Addington helped craft a memo approving torture.
Miss Applesassy just launched a NEW SITE: www,applesassy.com is the home of a “Social Media Socialite and Purveyor of Netiquette Charm. Applesassy is written under the pseudonym of Helena B. Heavens who writes under the second pseudonym of Miss Applesassy, a feminist time traveler who once entertained herself as the mistress of ultimate technology geek, Mr. H.G. Wells. The focus of Applesassy is an offering of tips for writers and bloggers using social media. (Read the “Who Writes Miss Applesassy” page page for the full bio.) A piece about the breast cancer free baby One about oral sex and cancer (I wish I were kidding)http://aftercancernowwhat.blogspot.com/2008/12/read-article-and-blog.html And Do layoffs cause cancer? http://aftercancernowwhat.blogspot.com/2009/01/do-layoffs-cause-cancer.html
Sorry, missed the link for the “Breast cancer free baby” here it is http://aftercancernowwhat.blogspot.com/2009/01/breast-cancer-free-baby-is-born.html
Looks like someone else beat me to the Bountiful blogging, but here’s my take on it, anyway. People are already trying to blame teh gays in a way, so I spend some time debunking that, as well as pointing out the problems with the practice of polygamy in Bountiful.
The question of the weekend is: How did I learn to be queer? Fun times with identity-forming and cultural transmission!
I interviewed a woman who handcrafts burlesque unders! http://suchcoolstuff.blogspot.com/2009/01/under-root-and-quarks.html
I just finished a piece about William Zantzinger, the white Maryland tobacco heir whose murder of black waitress Hattie Carroll in 1963 inspired one of Bob Dylan’s most powerful songs. Zantzinger and Barack Obama’s family share an odd connection, it turns out.
I didn’t write anything of social commentary, or anything of import really, just about the wind http://shinyrandomredhead.blogspot.com/2009/01/growing-pains-no-not-tv-show.html
On my blog this week I talked about Renee’s post “Mystical Negro and Self-flagellation”, how nobody is Asian in the movies, and On: Oscar Grant, the BART shooting, and resulting riots.
Oh, and I was going to mention something else, too. The third largest university in Canada has been shut down for more than two months because of a strike by adjunct faculty and teaching assistants. It’s a pretty big story, it seems to me, from a lot of angles, but I’ve seen nothing about it in the progressive blogosphere. I’m still getting up to speed with it, and I’ll be posting more analytical stuff in the next few days, but I’ve provided an overview and a bunch of links in posts here, here, here, and here.
The Other Half Of The Choice: Looking at why feminism routinely discuses reproductive freedom from the point of access to abortion while ignoring the conscious choice to become a mother. What If Selling Sex Is Your Business: Looking at why we need to STFU&L to sex trade workers if we are to make a safer world for all women. Gay, White and Male still equals privilege: Looking at racism and sexism in the GLBT community. This post specifically attacks the racist genderized Shirley Q Liquor comedic routine. What If Gay Marriage Isn’t For You: Looking at the ways the push for same gender marriage creates the model of the “acceptable” gay and lesbian while disenfranchising those who don’t want the white picket fence life. It further questions what other organizing drives are being ignored to push marriage.
Proof that Ann Coulter is a man. And not just any man. She’s Sacha Baron Cohen. http://afunnyfeminist.blogspot.com/2009/01/conspiracy-theory-ann-coulter-edition.html
I started a new blog this week, and I’m very excited to share and get some feedback. This is about the irony of MRAs complaining about feminists when it’s actually patriarchy to blame for the issue. I also wrote about the very annoying lumping of women and children into one group Patriarchy in a progressive church. There’s a fair bit more, but check it out if you’re interested. Not all of it is about feminism. As I say in my intro post: The idea behind this blog is to explore religion and politics from a feminist, socialist, Christian perspective. Now, I know that sounds rather oxymoronic (or even just moronic!) but I really don’t feel there’s a conflict.
I recently posted the first ten minutes of my twenty minute solo performance piece, “Ares and Aphrodite.” The piece is on my experience as a trans woman, and I’ll be posting the final ten minutes later this week. I know, I know. Solo performance on queer themes doesn’t scream “I must watch right now!” But check it out and let me know your thoughts – it’s my first major piece exploring queer identity and I’m hoping to expand upon it. -Rebecca
My friend is a secret feminist, plus (in that post) let’s try to create false memories so we don’t like fatty foods! Nothing like being unethical to drop those horrid pounds of fat. 😛
Taking off from a post of Renee’s over at Womanist Musings, I have some more thoughts on gay marriage. Also, this week’s Feminist Flashback features artist Barbara Kruger, and Fewthistle writes about whether gender/sex affects how men and women think.
A quick note about the House passing the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and the Paycheck Fairness Act (also seen on the Feministe front page) and my review of the Rachael Maddow SNL impression (not good) http://weblog.xanga.com/runnergirl1183/689081567/suck-it-alito.html
Ohshit there are multiple Rebeccas again. This is Rebecca of City of Ladies. Anyway, I wrote about some stuff I found in or doing research relating to Nixonland (quotes from Strom Thurmond on “pro-America,” a theme I often return to, and Huey Newton calling himself out on his privilege, which is very much worth reading.) —Strom and Huey More importantly, my co-blogger wrote a great post about problems of terminology when discussing the Gaza conflict. If you read one of these two, read his. —Semitic Semantics
I wrote a whole heap of stuff! I don’t even watch Avatar, about white actors cast in roles meant for Asian people. Because boys need even more attention. about Toon Disney switching to Disney XD, the new network for (white) boys. I’m not “aggressive”, about the most recent episode of 30 Rock. What I have to look forward to about Cara’s series on Yoko Ono at The Curvature. Enjoy!
Just a little bit on Flatsy Dolls (do you remember them?) and stuffed animals: http://annieem.wordpress.com/2009/01/06/dog-narrators-chocolate-bears-and-flatsy-dolls/
Gloria Steinhem, mediation, CleanFish, Dalai Lama, helped my daughter finish college aps, watched ‘Gran Torino,’ ‘Hamlet 2’ and ‘Frost/Nixon’ in one weekend and am wondering why “Milk” isn’t being hailed as the excellent movie that it is.
An alternative take on why Millennials aren’t so into dating. Is this photo sexist? Feminism and men in their underwear. Barbie vs Britney: who’s to blame for women’s body issues? Nicole Richie: um what baby bump? Tom Wolfe’s I Am Charlotte Simmonds: in which everything new is old again.
To combat the hopeless feelings about what is happening in Gaza, I wrote about how you can call the people there and show your support: http://www.qussa.nl/site/?p=359 (Long time reader, might be the first time I comment, hope it’s not too shameless to do so on this post!)
I have an piece about my wonderful and very enthusiastic gynecologist. It’s not for the weak, but I think it’s kinda amusing. And it includes stuff about my mom, who is an adorable and weird woman.
Here is this week’s installment of our Dreams For Women art project. We ask women and men of all ages to write their dreams for women on postcards and send them to us. We have received sumissions from all our the world. Check out this week’s: http://antigonemagazine.wordpress.com/2009/01/11/dreams-for-women-student-leadership-conference-edition/
I did a series of posts called ‘imagining equality’ on how different aspects of society, independently of any overt discrimination, reflect the needs of male dominance, and how they might be different in an equal society: Rape, Domestic Violence, and the Legal System: http://directionlessbones.wordpress.com/2009/01/06/rape-and-the-legal-system-imagining-equality/ Objectification, Pornography, and the Media: http://directionlessbones.wordpress.com/2009/01/07/objectification-and-the-media-imagining-equality/ Childcare, Housework, and the Economy: http://directionlessbones.wordpress.com/2009/01/09/womens-work-and-the-economy-imagining-equality/
We all have patterns we repeat and things we’re bound by. What are you stuck on? http://agirlidreamtup.blogspot.com/2009/01/stuck.html
Finally I have something vaguely relevant to contribute! I wrote a bit more about Paris Hilton’s recent comment which was blogged here, and in doing so resurrected an old blog series of mine.
I only have two new posts, but I need traffic so… My piece on Oscar Grant, which is mostly a link roundup. I also have a fun one, cynical lolz if you will. Mmmmm…Cowardice in Hypocrisy Sauce: about how Protectmarriage.com is trying to get out of taking responsibility for funding Prop 8.
i posted a Gaza War roundup on friday. for anyone who hasn’t had their fill of fighting news yet: http://getangrywithme.com/2009/01/israel-war-on-gaza/
I haven’t written this, but I thought I’d link it here, after I already linked it in a comment section. The paris Hilton thing once again hit home to me the huge differences between the US and Europe in their attitudes towards sex. http://www.spiegel.de/international/0,1518,417080,00.html
World news you may have forgotten about: http://notfrisco2.com/leones/?p=4026 Men are from Baltimore, Women are from Philadelphia: http://notfrisco2.com/leones/?p=4030 To Say “I Love You” Right Out Loud: http://notfrisco2.com/leones/?p=4039
I wrote about dialects in the US re: racial and class perceptions and biases, and also about a botched attempt to correct a friend who followed up a pro-GLBT statement with “but I’m not gay.”
My recent blog post about a teenage girl who was given a life sentence for stabbing her newborn baby. It’s about 3 posts down because I went post-happy the other day so you have to scroll a little.
Eh, I’m a little late this week. But last week’s MMW was chock full of fun: we looked at Syrian lingerie from another angle, pondered the interlocking oppression of Mona Awad, critique the LA Time’s profile of Aliyah Bacchus, review Slumdog Millionaire, discussed the construction of gold diggers in Muslim circles, and give mixed reviews to the coverage of Egyptian women in mosques. And, as always, a gaggle of links.
Over at Pink Scare, we’re just settling back in after the holidays. We’ve got a review of Slumdog Millionaire, lots of analysis on the crisis in Gaza, and how some conservative states are taking advantage of the economic crisis to pull funding away from essential welfare programs.
I, too had a little fun writing about Slumdog Millionaire, which followed a rant about hair — to Japanese straighten or not to Japanese straighten? How much cultural ideals have I absorbed to be so obsessed with the particular placement of the protein strands on my head? I asked fellow bloggers what I would find if I walked into their home for the very first time…
Speaking Truth to Power: An Interview with Jennifer Baumgardner by Ellen Papazian: “I’m no longer scared to hear people’s truths, and that has been incredibly liberating,” says feminist writer, filmmaker, and activist Jennifer Baumgardner. Truth-telling has been at the heart of Baumgardner’s work since she left Ms. magazine in the late-90s to become a prominent third wave feminist leader. Since then, she’s published books on young women and feminism (Manifesta, with Amy Richards), feminist activism (Grassroots, also with Richards), and bisexuality (Look Both Ways: Bisexual Politics)—and created an abortion campaign that literally asked women (in the form of her “I Had an Abortion” T-shirt) to insert the private into the public in the name of reproductive justice. The shirt created some controversy, brought women’s testimonies back into the national dialogue about abortion, and led Baumgardner to create another campaign: “I Was Raped.”
I solved the Middle East crisis in my blog this week: My Middle Beast Solution Last week was about gun toting liberals and having an all female cop show directed by Denis Leary: She Shot I posted earlier but the links weren’t right so they let me re-post. Thanks =)
