National Day of Silence

Today is the National Day of Silence, a day that symbolizes the silence that many gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people must suffer through. TCU’s Gay-Straight Alliance has put together the event, though unfortunately we’re a bit disorganized and, um, small. As such, there was not a large enough campaign to let the campus know about today. However, we have been handing out string necklaces that have a silent bell on them, along with 3×5 pieces of paper which say:

Please understand my reasons for not speaking today. I am participating in the Day of Silence, a national youth movement protesting the silence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their allies. My deliberate silence echoes that silence, which is caused by harassment, prejudice, and discrimination. I believe that ending the silence is the first step toward fighting these injustices. Think about the voices you are not hearing today.

What are you going to do to end the silence?
