And this is why we have a “stupidity” category

About Ahmadinejad’s visit to NYC a month or so back, one conservative blogger takes the lefty blogosphere to task for ignoring it, writing:

In the meantime, such supposed bastions of homosexual rights as Pandagon, Shakespeare’s Sister, and Feministe are silent in opposing Columbia’s invitation to Ahmadinejad. While it seems they are all more than willing to accuse all conservatives with being (inherently) racists, none can be bothered to speak out against a tyrant, homophobe, misogynist, and killer. Why? It is simple; Iran is the enemy of their enemy, civilization.
Update The president of Columbia, Mr. Bollinger, did a fine job of naming Ahmadinejad for what he is. I assume that he planned to do so from the beginning and, thus, I believe my remarks here may not apply to Mr. Bollinger. However, the reaction of many on the left side of the blogosphere makes me convinced that they are, in general, true.

To which I say, first, who are the anti-science, anti-human-rights, hard-on-for-theocracy, pro-torture, anti-gay, taking-us-back-to-the-Inquisition folks in the United States right now? Not so much the lefty bloggers.

And second, before you accuse us of “silence,” it might do you some good to run the term “Ahmadinejad” through our search functions.

  1. “Why? It is simple; Iran is the enemy of their enemy, civilization.”

That has got to be the dumbest thing I have ever read in a long, long time. What’s wrong with a little discussion instead of going in, guns blazing and bombs dropping?

Because hey, that’s been working so well in Iraq.

The guy also seemed to have forgotten that the people of Iran gave a democracy of sorts, and removed quite a bit of Ahmadinejad’s power in an election because they didn’t like his policies by voting in more liberal minded people.

I’ve MET people from Iran, and they were pretty darn nice.

  2. This reminds me of Horrowitz giving a speech at Columbia behind a backdrop with a gigantic photo of an Afghan woman being shot in the head.

  3. “Why? It is simple; Iran is the enemy of their enemy, civilization.”

damn…he’s onto us. time to rethink our moves…

jeebus i love it when people make bold claims w/o bothering to back it up at all…

  4. “Enemies of civilization.” Lol.

Still, he has a nugget of a point…assuming no other costs, nothing would improve human rights (for gays, women, etc.) worldwide more than replacing regimes like Iran with freedom loving democracies.
The real disagreement between the conservative blogger and everyone else is about whether it is actually feasible, both from military/tactical point of view, and whether there is actually political will in those countries to become more tolerant. The neocons are obviously wrong on these two enormous points.
Everyone with half a brain recognizes that countries like Iran, Pakistan, and even Libya and Egypt, are much much worse places to live than America, from any standpoint (human rights, economics…) That doesn’t mean we have the capability of changing them. Conservatives just get irked that the “liberal blogosphere” tends to be relatively silent about human rights abuses in middle eastern countries, but the silence is probably more to disagreement about feasibility of change rather than sympathy with horrible regimes.

  5. I can top that. I’m the only lefty blogger (that I know of) that’s been accused of having sex with Ahmadinejad.

Now he wins an award from THE Creative Loafing which will never run a negative article about Ahmadinejad (Hussy’s love partner). They even mention my blog as they give him the award as if it was some Goddamn big deal to call out a CAB DRIVER!

I actual did write a negative post about Ahmadinejad denial of the holocaust and homosexuals in Iran. Wingnuts need to tell themselves that the Left loves tyrants. It justifies their worldview and keeps them from having to defend their positions on torture and warrantless wiretapping.

  6. It does no good to oppose Ahmadinejad, you have to oppose him when the rightwing is paying attention.

If they don’t see it, it doesn’t exist.
