For the Jin fans, since I didn’t deliver last time.
Season finale. Woah. Spoilers below the fold.
So they get off of the island — or at least, Kate and Jack do. And something happens while they’re getting off the island that is very, very bad. Questions and theories:
1. The big one, obviously, is the question of whose funeral it was. The casket looked small, and there were no verbal references to whether the dead person is male or female. So it could be a child, or a small-ish person. But I could have sworn that the article Jack tore out of the newspaper referenced “Man…,” so I think it’s a dude. Obvious guess would be Juliet, but I don’t think she would have had such a lonely funeral. It’s someone that Kate dislikes, but that upsets Jack. I’m thinking either Locke or Ben. Ben, because perhaps he somehow redeems himself, or because Jack realizes that he was right all along about calling the ship. Locke for obvious reasons. Alternately, it could be Sawyer, who, being Sawyer, may have fucked over Kate at some point, which explains why she wouldn’t want to go to the funeral.
2. Who is Naomi? She obviously only knows who Desmond is, so my first theory is that she’s connected to Penny’s father in some way. But when Jack answers the phone, I’m pretty sure that the person on the other end identifies himself as Radinsky. Radinsky, if I remember correctly (which I might not), was one of the guys who used to be in the hatch, who supposedly committed suicide. So perhaps that was a lie, and Radinsky is on the boat with other Dharma people. Or there could be some connection between Penny’s father and Dharma. Either way, the people who are coming are going to be bad.
Just because.
3. Was Walt actually Walt, or was he some sort of figment of John’s imagination, or of the island’s doing? Way back one of the Others asked Michael if Walt ever appeared in places he wasn’t supposed to be, and Michael didn’t answer, but looked disturbed. Plus other people have seen Walt walking around, so something supernatural is going on with him. I could have sworn that I heard a weird whispery voice before Walt spoke, though, so there’s gotta be some sort of Jacob connection with Locke’s recovery, and some connection between Walt and Jacob.
4. Does Mikhail have nine lives? Why is it impossible to kill him? He has now been blown up, pushed into some sort of killer invisible fence, and speared through the chest. If setting off a grenade in his own hand doesn’t kill him, I think it’s fair to say that he’s invincible. Which leads to the question of who/what the hell he is.
5. The blonde woman in the underwater station said she was following orders, because if she doesn’t follow orders than “everything we’re doing here falls apart” (or something like that). What are the Others doing? Also, Mikhail said that he thought they were “stationed” in Canada. Now the Others station people around the world? We know that there’s the whole pregnancy thing, but clearly the Others are doing something else. And that something else must be incredibly well-funded.
Gratuitous? Yes. Glorious? Definitely.
6. Someone on one of the LOST blogs (yes, I admit, I read one yesterday) speculated that the flash forward was actually one of Desmond’s visions, and not the actual future, making it alterable. Thoughts?
7. Another person speculated that the woman and the kid in the car crash were Claire and Aaron, which is why Jack was so concerned about them. Sounds pretty convincing to me, if only because it’s something the LOST writers would do. But the kid was a little old to be Aaron, so who knows. Another theory: That the woman who Jack saved was Juliet’s sister.
8. Why is Kate not in prison in the flash forward?
9. What’s with the references to Jack’s dad in the flash forward? If his dad is dead, why mention him twice as if he were alive? My theory: His dad is alive. They found his coffin on the island, but it was empty. And Jack saw him on the island.
Good Lord I love Google Images.
10. Charlie’s death was great. I teared up, and the producers did a good job of making him likable again. Some blog commenters are wondering why he didn’t swim out, or are speculating that he’ll be back. No, he’s dead for sure, and he will not be back. He didn’t swim out because he knows that if you change something about Desmond’s visions, then the future will change. He wants Claire and the baby off the island, and is willing to sacrifice himself to make sure it happens. Good job, Charlie.
11. Is Kate pregnant? I vote yes.
12. How did Penny channel directly through to the underwater station?
Gotta love the Female Gaze.
13. Jack told Hurley and the others to stay put on the beach, but he told them that through Ben’s walkie — could some of the Others have heard him?
14. What’s the deal with the guy who doesn’t age and looks like his face is made of plastic? Why is Ben in charge over him, when we know that he was an original Other and Ben wasn’t?
15. Who is the little girl Ben was friends with as a child?
16. Who dies next season? Predictions? And who, besides Jack and Kate, make it off the island?
17. Finally, will we see mostly flash-forwards next season? I predict yes, because there’s only so much more they can do on the island and with the flash-backs. Three years is a long time — I think they’ll keep going with this backwards-looking thing.
The End.
