Shameless Self-Promotion Sunday

Promote yourself. (Or somebody else.)

Netiquette reminders:

  • we expect Content Notes as a courtesy to our readers for problematic content in linked posts and/or their comment threads (a habit of posting only triggering/disparaging links may annoy the Giraffe (you really don’t want to annoy the Giraffe)), Content Notes are not needed if your post title is already descriptive of problematic content.
  • extended discussion of self-promotion links on this thread is counter-productive for the intended signal-boosting –  the idea is for the promoted sites to get more traffic.  If it’s a side-discussion that would be off-topic/unwelcome/distressing on the other site, take it to #spillover after leaving a note on this thread redirecting others there.

  1. My response to the shooting of nine African-Americans in their church in Charleston, and the killer’s claim that he acted because “you rape our women”: Where I Stand, as I Speak Their Names

I have a problem with advertising that comes with a side of sexy (or, yknow, sexist) patriotism: And no — I won’t be pledging allegiance to your bra, either.

I wrote about believing, as a girlchild, that I needed to make myself small and silent to be safe — and about how hard that lesson is to unlearn as an adult (part of an ongoing memoir project): Portrait of the Statue as a Young Girl

Finally, a brief post on how even the streets of Philadelphia are celebrating the legalization of same-sex marriage!

  2. I’m publishing Q&A’s with LGBTQ folks throughout Western PA, emphasizing those whose voices aren’t often heard. So far I have 15 published, representing 7 different counties (out of 26.) This project continue through 2016 and I hit the road this month to go to A LOT of PFLAG picnics and meet people. 🙂 You can browse the responses here.

Pride has been very political this year in Pittsburgh. I’m working my way through a 4 part wrap up of the key events that I witnessed. Part One was a small meeting to air out difference – ahem. Part Two was a town hall meeting where everyone was included.

Finally, my friend and local gay florist had a once in a lifetime chance to design an arrangement for Mick Jagger when the Stones came to town. He let me tag along. It was fun.

  3. In the last two weeks I wrote about a mini-controversy in Guelph, Ontario (where, by the way, it has been legal to go topless in public for 20 years now) where a couple was told their 8-year-old daughter couldn’t swim at a public pool without a top on, because now we have to not only freak out about boobs, but potential boobs as well.

Also, my rage towards the awful Elle Decor article with the lady who had to choose between an extra kid and a luxury dream home.

  4. “Murder Seen Through the Eyes of a Child” is a great read that catalogs the struggles of a mountain family in Appalachia as they defend their property against the terrible mining practice of mountain top removal. It is a great simple book that also catalogs the adventures of 3 young boys as they watch this tragedy unfold. It is fiction but based on actual events that really happened in the lives of these 3 young boys. See it at Booklocker.com & at nathanrhodesauthor.com and all major online stores. It is getting good reviews on Amazon and Goodreads.

  5. PinkoHippie NonSense is a fun little collection of thoughts and poems, if by fun, you understand that they deal with the range of female-identifying experiences, some of which are triggering/child abuse/mental health, approached in a forthright, sometimes irreverent, vividly imagistic, my kind of way.

this one is about a mental health center I helped sue: http://pinkohippie.blogspot.com/2015/06/another-round-of-blogging-saddest-zoo.html
but feel free to browse & leave feedback

  7. In the second season of Sailor Moon, Sailor Moon’s young daughter from the future becomes an older–and evil–version of herself. This evil incarnation who calls herself Black Lady desires Tuxedo Mask who happens to be her future father. Black Lady passionately kisses her future father not once, but twice in the show. The following article explores what an Electra complex is, does it even exist and does Sailor Moon’s daughter actually have one?

Beautiful Like You: Black Lady’s Uncomfortable Electra Complex

  8. TW: sexual violence, discussions of racism

Haven’t written in a long time. Stuff came out. Some (long-delayed) thoughts about the dress Rihanna wore, in her tribute to Josephine Baker. What could have started a meaningful conversation about self-definition, and the multifaceted nature of human identity, was, instead, co-opted by a discussion of whether Rihanna is a slut: http://www.dominiquemillette.com/bakerday.html
