Policeman arraigned in murder of Akai Gurley

So, finally a police officer has been indicted in the shooting death of an unarmed black man: Peter Liang is being indicted on charges of manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, and two counts of official misconduct.

This is of course “good” news. But I can’t help but notice that the one cop actually to face charges is one who’s not white. And I can’t buy that it’s a coincidence.

Liang is pleading not guilty and released by the judge on his own recognizance.

    1. Here’s a fun fact, Comrade: since I’m not affiliated with the court or the legal system, I don’t consider myself bound by their definitions or standards. Deal with it.

  1. I used to live in NYC and still commute in to work there.

I’ve been fairly leery of the NYPD for a long time. That someone got accidentally shot because a cop was running around with his gun drawn doesn’t surprise me. I’ve seen cops running on subway platforms with guns drawn, and news accounts report that NYPD policy is that it’s entirely up to the individual cop whether to draw their gun in a situation. I’m only surprised that more people haven’t been killed.

The NYPD has never impressed me with their professionalism, and there are frequent incidents where they seem more interested in maintaining their right to do whatever they want without criticism than in protecting citizens. This isn’t to say that they’re all like that, but the ones who are are the ones running the show.

This is on top of their well-known record of corruption and racism (including racist policies dictated from the top.) The current mayor seems to be less of a Putin-wannabee than his predecessor (so far!), but I’m not sure how much he can actually do.

Well, there’s Sean Groubert…but he was caught on tape.

    1. Thanks for the link and the information–I didn’t know about the aftermath to that shooting. I suspect it’s also significant that Jones lived and could testify, because the cop who killed Eric Garner was also caught on tape, and he’s walked away unscathed.
