Open Thread with Crêpe in a Pan

In honour of my younger sprog having too sore a throat last night to eat anything but pancakes (and our family preference for thin crêpes with caramelised edges vs bulkier fluffy pancakes), this French crêpe cooking away on the hob features for this week’s Open Thread. Please natter/chatter/vent/rant on anything* you like over this weekend and throughout the week.

So, what have you been up to? What would you rather be up to? What’s been awesome/awful?
Reading? Watching? Making? Meeting?
What has [insert awesome inspiration/fave fansquee/guilty pleasure/dastardly ne’er-do-well/threat to all civilised life on the planet du jour] been up to?

* There is no off-topic on the Weekly Open Thread, but consider whether your comment would be on-topic on any recent thread and thus better belongs there.
* If your comment touches on topics known to generally result in thread-jacking, you will be expected to take the discussion to #spillover instead of overshadowing the social/circuit-breaking aspects of this thread.

  1. My godson is sick, too, running 101.5 at last check. The rest of us have the sniffles, which is what he had the day or two before today. I have a bad feeling about this weekend…

I just hope it’s only a bad cold. One of his favorite friends at nursery school has strep.

    1. Does he have a history of strep throat/ear infections? They’re just the worst. I hope that’s not it.

      1. Nah. He’s had a couple ear infections, one that cleared up by itself and one that needed antibiotics, but it’s not a regular occurrence. I was one of those kids that had ear infections constantly. And strep.

Clearly you haven’t been paying enough attention to your duty as the religious influence in his life….

    3. Every insurance company knows if you displease God in the U.S., He’ll punish you with hurricanes, terrorist attacks and strep. It’s a Christian nation, after all, so filing a claim that blames God will totally fly.

  2. Things are looking up. Twisty Faster is on the Web again!

A recent article has a wonderfully quotable quote:

Rather than a lifestyle accessory in the shape of some passive, nebulous, and capriciously applied “belief in gender equality,” feminism is in fact a political movement the goal of which is the liberation of women from patriarchal oppression.

I’m tempted to permanently etch this onto my hard disk, so I can cut-and-paste it into a response to every dude (somehow, it’s always a dude) who uses the “True Feminism is about gender equality” argument to shut down some feminist discussion.

    1. I’m glad to see her back. I know she had health issues.

I like her because she’s one of the few well-known radical feminists around today who is NOT transphobic, and has very firmly banned transphobic comments from her blog. (Not that TERFs don’t still try, every time anything related to trans issues comes up.)

  3. Hi everyone! We’re a couple of women trying to make pregnancy tests better and would really love the feedback of women who know what they’re talking about! Share your thoughts with us if you have 5 min to spare.
LIA Diagnostics wants to hear your thoughts in order to finally revolutionize pregnancy tests to be better for all women.

Share your thoughts with us if you have 5 min to spare.

    Thanks -LIA

  4. Hi everyone. I realize this is a random topic, but has anyone here heard of Sampat Pal? I’m watching a program about her and I think she’s amazing. Do look her up.

  5. I got a raise in my hormone dosages recently! My daily dosage amounts for both estrogen and spiro have doubled, which happens to be around what I was hoping to get and is still within a healthy range. It’s kind of weird how the doctor raised the dosages without me asking, but perhaps he thought it was ok for me to take higher doses after he looked at my recent blood work. I’m really excited because this means for me that my transition is going to stop being agonizingly slow. And I’m already starting to feel the difference.

  6. RIP to long-time CBS News and 60 Minutes journalist Bob Simon, who survived being captured and held as a hostage in the first Gulf War, but died in an accident on the West Side Highway tonight:

I have no idea if he was wearing his seat belt, but people not from NYC should know that a whole lot of people here who would never dream of getting in a private car without fastening their seat belt, almost never bother to buckle up when taking a taxi or livery car.

  7. Sorry, dudes. But here’s yet another way NOT to pick up women:

Unsettling Notes Left on Women’s Vehicles

A man has been seen leaving the notes indicating he has been watching the women go in and out of stores.

“It’s pretty unsettling,” said one woman, who asked not to be identified. “I could feel something was strange.”

The woman said she felt someone was watching her as she left a Hendersonville grocery store. She then found the note on her vehicle.

“It said, ‘Wow! Saw you walk in. Just wanted to say hi.’ And then his phone number and a smiley face,” the woman said.

    1. Excellent. My trauma-induced paranoid thoughts about creepy dudes stalking me wherever I go now have a basis in reality. Thank you for assuring me that I have legitimate reasons to avoid frequently going outside. I feel so much safer now!
