NYC Museum Recommendation: Munch at the MoMA

If you haven’t gone yet, go. I went two weekends ago, and it’s amazing. I love the MoMA anyway because I have a modern art obsession (I would marry Mark Rothko possibly before Anderson Cooper), but the Munch exhibit is worth a visit in itself. My favorite piece of his, which is part of the exhibit, is below the fold. It includes boobies, so if you’re working for John Ashcroft, don’t click. But they’re tasteful, artistic boobies.

madonna
Madonna.

Interestingly, there’s another version which includes a border of sperm and a fetus. It’s a really interesting piece.

  1. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the other version either – and I’m a Munch fan as well. Interesting indeed.

“Madonna” was used as a cover piece for an anthology of Victorian vampire stories, “Blood and Roses”. The stories were great too.

  2. That is a great piece. Here’s a less-widely-known fact: It was first exhibited under another title: “Woman in the act of love,” which puts a rather different spin on it than “Madonna.” There was outcry, not surprisingly, and Munch came up with the title still used today.

  3. Ohhh, I love that piece as well. I saw both versions in person years ago at the exhibit, “The Frieze of Life” in London. Until that exhibit, I’d only seen “The Scream” (of course), but found that many of his other pieces were much more interesting.
