In defense of the sanctimonious women's studies set || First feminist blog on the internet

Selfless Signal-Boosting Wednesday

A complement to our long-standing Shameless Self-Promotion Sundays, this thread is for links to pieces on other people’s blogs that you have found delightful memorable/provoking recently, especially those who are blogging on issues Feministe has not recently addressed.  Please save the self-promotion links for this Sunday – use this thread to let Feministe readers know about the other blogs you love to read, especially those on the margins of the mainstream social justice communities, who tend to not get as much exposure as they should.

Guidelines:

  1. This is not a new Open thread – mainstream media/news links that you want to discuss should be taken there. This thread is for signal-boosting bloggers and ex-bloggers’ opinion/analysis pieces, not just journalistic reportage.
  2. Ensure other readers have enough information about the post to make an informed choice on whether to click on your link. Content notes are advised for posts discussing problematic issues/incidents that might be NSFW or potentially distressing/triggering.
  3. Keep this thread focussed on the linking – the idea is to make your comments on the other blogs being linked! By all means second a recommendation or thank someone for a link you found worthwhile, but please leave it at that. If you feel you must discuss a link in more detail here at Feministe, please take it to the Open or Spillover threads (see sidebar for quicklinks), depending on your assessment of its zombie stoush potential.

    1. This has pretty much all the tweets that went down plus some blog articles. ceepolk posted it on atheismplus.

    1. Thanks for this, EG. I posted this in the Spillover thread a few days ago, but I don’t know that most folks actually saw irt. Talk about nailing it.

One of the biggest benefits (bad word choice there, I dunno how else to express it) of this whole Scwhizzy backlash has been seeing that so many previously ignored voices getting heard.

It’s still not nearly enough, but it’s a good place to start.

    2. Great stuff there, EG. You are something of a guide in the wilderness, at this point. (If memory serves, you have been in the past as well).

Everything @redlightvoices expressed is so on point.

I hope readers of Feministe and Jezebel get to see this.

      1. You’re very kind! But honestly, plenty of people have better info than me–plenty of WoC bloggers especially. If you’re on Twitter, @Karnythia is the person to follow, and I’m also a fan of @angryblackwomen.

    3. This was great.

I was up last night until 3 am just reading tweets under the #solidarityisforwhitewomen hashtag. It was all amazing. And this certainly isn’t even close to the primary reason I find it so amazing, but I do admit to a certain amount of entirely personal (and irrelevant for present purposes) schadenfreude, reading all these incisive critiques of white feminists and feminism in general. Given that they haven’t been any more supportive of women like me than they have of WOC for the last 50 years or so.

    1. With all of the opinions floating around, it’s good to get Mikki’s first-hand perspective. Glad The Guardian helped to get her voice heard.

      1. Definitely. Particularly with sites like Jezebel throwing up an “Our Favorite #SolidarityIsForWhiteWomen Tweets!” post without crediting Mikki or mentioning their role in this nonsense. If they just keep quiet, maybe we’ll believe they were intersectional all along!

        1. Seriously? It’s not so long ago that Jezebel was deleting every single comment that was even mildly critical of HS and Jezebel’s decision to give him a platform.

  1. In light of some of the recent conversations being had at Feministe about porn and sex work, I thought this recent blog by Stoya was quite timely. I think she really nails some of the more nuanced aspects of sex work and pornography, and at the very least it is an interesting view from the inside. Bonus points for discussing how we as a culture assess the feminist bona fides of those who engage in sex work and pornography.

  2. Due to reading/absorbing what’s being said on the #solidarityisforwhitewomen posts, I’ve just updated the OP to emphasise that links from bloggers on the margins of the mainstream social justice communities are especially sought, since it’s very clear that many marginalised bloggers simply don’t get the exposure they deserve. Please help us with crowdsourcing links to these voices that we need to be listening to more mindfully.
