Grover on Marriage

Love knows no color or texture, and marriage is when two people get married. In this clip from a 1983 episode of “Sesame Street,” Grover and a little boy named Jesse define the concept of marriage. I’m not going to give away the ending, but their definition involves kissing, hugging, being friends, helping each other, and being between a mommy and a daddy. Wait, shoot, not that last one.

(Grover and Jesse also discuss love.)

GROVER. Hi, Jesse.

JESSE. Hi, Grover.

GROVER. How are you?

JESSE. Fine.

GROVER. Good. I have a question for you.

JESSE. What is it?

GROVER. Well, you know what marriage is?

JESSE. A marriage is — is when two people get married.

GROVER. Yeah, yeah. That’s good. That’s marriage. What else do they — When they get married, then what do they do when they’re married?

JESSE. Kiss!

GROVER. They kiss, yes. What else when they’re married?

JESSE. Hmm. Hug.

GROVER. Hug. That’s good. That’s good. Anything else?

JESSE. Nope!

GROVER. That’s it?

JESSE. Yup!

GROVER. Well, they live together, they help each other, don’t they?

JESSE. Mm-hmm.

GROVER. Yeah, yeah. ‘Cause they see each other every day.

JESSE. Yup.

GROVER. So it’s important to help each other.

JESSE. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

GROVER. Are they friends also?

JESSE. Yup.

GROVER. Yeah. Well, that’s a lot in a marriage, isn’t it? Kissing, hugging —

JESSE. Yup.

GROVER. — friends, helping. All that stuff. Yeah. Well, I guess that’s what marriage is about.

JESSE. Yup.

GROVER. Thank you for your help.

JESSE. You’re welcome.

  1. I’m so charmed there are birdies tweeting little circles around my head.

    I love Grover, too.

  2. lol The kid is looking at him like Grover is leading him into saying something naughty that’s going to be embarrassing and get him into trouble.

  3. Sesame Street <3

I would have been so pissed off if Romney got his way. I watched that show as a kid until the age of 10, and even 8 years later I still see it as one of the best shows for kids out there.

Also, that little boy is just adorable.
