Binders Full of Women

Image of 9 female senators

Are about to occupy the Senate. Record numbers of women were elected to Senate seats last night, and almost all the new female senators are Democrats. The 113th Congress will have 19 (possibly 20) female senators, the most in American history. Among the big wins for women are the first openly lesbian woman to be elected to the U.S. Senate, the first Asian woman to be elected to the U.S. Senate, and the first woman with a disability to be elected to the House (and she beat extreme anti-abortion Tea Partier Joe Walsh). Tammy Baldwin, Mazie Hirono, Tammy Duckworth (and many more in the House), Elizabeth Warren, Claire McCaskill, (hopefully) Heidi Heitkamp, Maria Cantwell, Diane Feinstein, Kirsten Gillibrand, Amy Klobuchar, Debbie Stabenow. That is quite a binder.

I’d like to personally thank the GOP for these victories. Without waging an intense war on women’s rights, targeting basic things like birth control and women’s health and rape victims, this probably wouldn’t have happened. So thanks, Republican rape philosophers. We couldn’t have done it without you.

    1. Apparently Deb Fisher encourages voluntary prayers at school.

Endorse voluntary prayer in public schools. (Nov 2004)

How much anyone wanna bet me that isn’t mine?

        1. Because it serves to single out students who are not praying, or who are praying differently, and public schools are government institutions, where there shall be no establishment of religion. Public schools need to be welcoming to all, regardless of religion or lack thereof.

    2. “Actually, one of the new female senators, Deb Fisher of Nebraska, is a Republican and does not support choice, even in cases of rape or incest.”

Wow, how did that happen? And she beat former US Senator and MOH recipient Bob Kerry, by a substantial margin.

  1. “all the new female senators are Democrats”

What about Deb Fischer? Republican senator from Missouri.

  2. I assume you’ve already seen this (I’m not sure where it originated):

“The Rape guy lost” “Which one?” Your party has serious issues if people have to ask “Which one?”

    1. I had basically that exact same text message convo with a friend last night.

Him: Good news!!! That Republican rape guy lost!
Me: That’s great! But which one?
      Him: Good point.

      1. “Him: Good news!!! That Republican rape guy lost!
Me: Thatโ€™s great! But which one?
        Him: Good point.”

Great point. All Republicans are rape guys, aren’t they?

  3. So happy, even though not a U.S citizen ๐Ÿ˜€

Next election, a woman (democratic) president. That would be a game-changer, and an inspiration for countless people ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. i think world is aprensiheve of electing another women president after english women of 80s margerire thatchare. however woman is president in australian at the moment. but anti gays marrying each other

        1. There are many things wrong with this comment, the least of which is that we call the head of our government a ‘Prime Minister’ and not a ‘President’. That’s because our head of state is the Queen of England (a woman), whose symbolic representative in Australia is our Governor-General (also a woman). There’s a similar arrangement at state level – government is led by the Premier (in my state, a man, though his predecessor was a woman) with the Governor (in my state, a woman) as the Queen’s representative. A few years ago, where I live, our Prime Minister, Premier, Governor-General, Governor and Queen were all women.

        2. Oh yes clearly Margaret Thatcher being a lousy prime minister shows that no woman anywhere ever should be allowed to run a country.

Just like President Bush being a lousy president shows that no white man should be allowed to run a country.

        3. Yep, margarine thatcher doesn’t hold a candle to butter. Or something!

FYI, Thatcher is not the only female president/prime minister ever.

        4. but still point stand austrian prime minister woman is against homosexual marriage so women doesnt garantee liberal ideas

        5. No, your point doesn’t stand. Your “point,” such as it was, was that the “world” had been burned by Thatcher, and so would not elect another female head of state. Since there have been female heads of state before and after Thatcher, your point is incorrect.

Since nobody ever argued that a female head of state would of course be progressive, your next point is moot.

    1. huh.. how is that democrany if more woman then men are vote. we need to encourage all peoepls to vote, men and woman

      1. Women have historically voted less than men and are also a larger percentage of the population than men; the uptick is important. Also, men are responsible for their own voting habits.

Furthermore, women are drastically underrepresented in American politics, and they had a lot at stake in this election. That undermines democracy, when 51% of the population are actively suppressed. Spare me your tears for “democracy.”

        1. but isnt sayin that men responsiblity of voting is the same as saying that for woman if they get pay less than its there responsiblility ?

so for man u hold reponsilibity for doing vote but for woman u not hold the reponsisibilty for not working hard

        2. Tomek, not only is your argument falacious, but it’s all but undecypherable thanks to your complete lack of grammar and punctuation. If you feel strongly enough about the issue to comment, I would think you’d at least want the comment to be ledgible to public.

As for the demographic issues, since every citizen of this country gets one vote, if your demographic is under-represented, either A) you make up a smaller percentage of the whole, and so your issue is represented as an equivalent fraction of the whole, or, B) those in your demographic choose not to vote in equal percentage to their share of the population, in which case you have no one to blame but yourselves.

This, by the way, is coming from a middle class, white, male, who got his one vote in.

    2. Yeah you guys have been deciding elections for years. Not every advancement for women is taking away from the men. It’s just that as one of those woman voters seen as having insignificant issues by Romney etal including the rape apologists he just didn’t earn my vote.

        1. So, here is a quote from a comment on that posting: “The GOP is the emotional tampon of American politics.” (laughed, then BZUH?)

        2. Oh sorry, I didn’t mean to traumatize anyone. I filed it in the so bad it’s good category.

Anthro Babe, hmm…it clogs up, and you have to flush it down the toilet so as to avoid disease and horrid discomfort? That’s all I got. It’s an evocative comment, for sure, but I couldn’t claim to know where its author is trying to go.
